Their first 2 albums are absolutely perfect masterpieces. If the internet had been available then the Smithereens would have the acclaim they so richly deserve. THE SMITHEREENS FOREVER!!PAT DE NIZIO LIVES !!!
You are absolutely right. I bought their debut album ,Especially for you on cassette in 1987. It was a time when pop metal from the likes of Bon Jovi and Poison plus dance music from Michael Jackson and Madonna reigned supreme. My college mates thought I was a weirdo when I played the Smithereens album ! No regrets for discovering the fantastic music of The Smithereens.
@@slapittywapitty8173 oh yes! Together with REM, Senator Flaux and British acts like The Smiths, many of us college students discovered a treasure trove of indie acts. Suzanne Vega was a superb talent. Mr DeNizio even ran for the Senate in 2000 !
I used to dance to this song with my brother, after having seen these guys in concert when we were just kids. I remember having a sense of, "I'm going to remember this- I'm going to miss this." This song. So underrated.
Those Rics ...get me going every time. Love the Smithereens. Wish I had seen them more times back in Jersey in the 90s. They always put on a fantastic show.
Drove by the two houses I grew up in as a kid a few years ago with this great Smithereens song and the lyrics in my mind as I gazed upon my youth from 40 years earlier as just a kid growing up in those homes.
I was too young when I first heard this song, now, with 2 divorces, and 2 houses I had to leave, I know this song in my soul, and it is not a happy upbeat song, there is anger and sadness there, and also what could have been. The house isn't haunted, we are. 😢
As it's been mentioned before Pat wrote this about him losing his childhood home due to foreclosure but it's amazing how up temple it is. You'd think this song might have been slower and sounding similar to "Blood & Roses."
Agreed. At the same time there are dark undertones and notes that hit me almost to tears, like a beautiful tradgedy. I did not know the story behind this song until I read your post. Also video flashes of a childhood that will never come back in a persons life once lived. The visual ques gave me the impression of unsettled or taken, if this makes sense. Blows me away how good they were yet so simple, on the surface!
It is so weird when you a fragmented memory of something. I know I remember this band from my childhood, I'm sure I watched this video a million times when I was kid but I at the same time this seems so foreign.
A House is not a Home. Without people, it’s just an empty shell. A House needs to be lived in and maintained and cared for constantly. Or it does fall apart slowly and starts to deteriorate. It needs a New Roof every 10 years or so and a new coat of Paint once the paint starts fading or peeling. And new carpets or Kitchen cabinets. Otherwise, if left alone it all goes to Decay.

RIP Pat, he performed in our town near the end of his life and he was a truly wonderful guy, long live the Smithereens
In 1986, this was one of the top 10 songs of my life. It deserves more of a recognition.
This one came out in 1988. It's on the album 'Green Thoughts'
What a Neomaxizoomdweebie!
the whole record is great!!!!!!@@jimbailey5681
Couldn't agree more , these guys were slept on big-time
The song that made me a Smithereens fan.
My favorite band of all time.
We used to see em at the Stone Pony!!
The more I hear The Smithereens the more I like them!
I used to dance to this song with my brother, after having seen these guys in concert when we were just kids. I remember having a sense of, "I'm going to remember this- I'm going to miss this." This song. So underrated.
Pat was such a great songwriter and a clever lyricist.
This certainly deserves more than 664 views. Sheesh!
This song throws my emotions all over the place! What a brilliant song and video. Pat in in a better place now.
Great song, and also a sad song. DiNizio wrote it about his childhood home being torn down.
Yup. Pat knew how to write a song.
Even it mentions the house being torn down my understanding it was actually the story of his family losing their home to forclosure.
Pat wrote upbeat-sounding music with rather dark lyrics. Rest In Peace.
It's still good but still quite interesting that a rather sad song is so sped up.
I remember listening to them so long long ago. Now I am rediscovering them. Simple excellence
Thousand ❤
Love the guitar solo on this. I remember when this debuted on mtv, back when the Channel was special. Broke artists.
Jim always plays cool guitar parts
Those Rics ...get me going every time. Love the Smithereens. Wish I had seen them more times back in Jersey in the 90s. They always put on a fantastic show.
Love babjaks guitar in this song

The chorus is just so insanely catchy. Love this track

I don't see what you mean by too young. Plus can't you people keep marriages?
These guys came to my hometown in 88' and played The Regency Showcase. It was a 21 and over show, couldn't sneak in i was so pissed!

This song and video was my introduction to The Smithereens as a kid watching MTV back in 1988 when it came out.

"House We Used To Live In" ~ ( 1988 ) ~ ( Accurate ) Lyrics
Band: The Smithereens/Written: Patrick Michael Dinizio (Lead Vocals)
____This is the house we used to live in
This is the place I used to know
This is the house we used to live in
Where I felt I could always go
House that we used to live in
( House that we used to live in )
House where I left my heart
( House where I left my heart )
House that we used to live in fallin' apart
This is the house we used to live in
This is the place that I once knew
This is the house we used to live in
Where I once shared my life with you
* House that we used to live in
( House that we used to live in )
House where I left my heart
( House where I left my heart )
House that we used to live in fallin' apart
A house is not a home
And when you live alone, you'll find
That it's much harder than
So much harder to believe
( Instrumental )
* House that we used to live in
( House that we used to live in )
House where I left my heart
( House where I left my heart )
House that we used to live in fallin' apart
Our house was not a home
And we both felt alone it seems
It is empty now
Worn and broken like our dreams
Whoooo!
( Brief Instrumental )
This is the house we used to live in
This is a place in our green town
This is the house we used to live in
One look before they tear it down
* House that we used to live in
( House that we used to live in )
House where I left my heart
( House where I left my heart )
House that we used to live in fallin' apart
Fallin' apart
Fallin' apart
House -- we - used - to live in
House - we - used - we used to live in
( House - we - used - we used to live in )
House - we - used - we used to live in
( House - we - used - we used to live in )
House - we - used - we used to live in
( House - we - used - we used to live in )
( Fade - Out )
