Without the hire boats, many hundreds of people and families would not be able to have a holiday that is so different to other holidays, I have sailed the broads for at least 35 years and generally have had few problems with the hire boats, certainly not worth expressing a strong derogatory opinion about them. Without the income from hire boats, the upkeep of the Broads would be more expensive for we private boat owners. If moored where there is a possibility of being bumped, I usually have plenty of fenders on the side that is most vulnerable. Some measure of solitude is boring to some and pleasant to others. Come on old chap, loosen up a little. I find the vlogs very interesting and hope to view the later ones. Thank you for posting, warts and all.

+Maximim720 No one wants the hire boats to go. Neither is one in need of loosening up. It's down to certain hire companies renting out 45 foot monstrous boats towing 12 foot dinghies to people with 10 minutes tuition knowing full well that it will cause total chaos. The industry needs far stricter regulations. It's a health and safety nightmare.

High Seas-liveaboarders. Hello Miles, my comment wrt loosening up was not intended to offend. If it did, then I apologise. Yesterday, I watched all your liveaboard videos and found them interesting enough to watch them all in one go. The fierce winds you encountered can really cause a feeling of anxiety, even when moored, and well tied in. Condolences about you canine companion, a companion not just a dog. John Thompson.

Oh and I've just watched that clip, fully, early on, and .....it totally is a Cormorant. You were right ! A Grebe is a fifth of this birds size!

Hello from the USA Miles. Yours has been one of the most interesting video series yet. Things are somewhat different in Florida where I live and keep my sailboat at a local marina. The bird you saw diving is what we call a cormorant, same as the ones we see all over the bay (and perching on poles and channel markers) here in Pensacola. The "attack" of the swans looked much like a mating rather than a fight; not sure, but think so. Anyway, can hardly wait to view the remainder of your episodes. Sorry about your dog. May God bless.

The swans are very violent to one another. At first I though they were at it but apparently not. They jump on each others back and bite the neck and drown the other birds. Ducks do it too, it is very distressing to watch but that is just the way nature rolls.

If you have a luff-rope-in-slot or a slugs-in-slot mainsail system, try some Armor-All, silicone spray lube, or equivalent plastic protectant that leaves a slicker surface, on the mainsail rope/slugs and in mainsail track to help it drop (and raise!) easier (no grease though as it will just end up a mess). You can probably hand repair the jib/genoa at fairly low cost with the right kit. I imagine all the people up in that backwater neck of the woods probably aren't bored and actually enjoy the peace and quiet; perhaps they spend time talking with other boaters. And maybe reading books on sailing, sail repair, the feeding habits of cormorants, and the mating habits of swans. ;) Beautiful camping spot on the bank; it seems to agree with you and Stella well after the hire-boat drama.

Hey buddy. I just realised at like 02:12 you inadvertently captured a Kingfisher flying across your field of view!! I'd put my life on it. We saw one four days in a row last year in late May. There's hardly another bird with that same flight; and I that's it's high pitched shrill call you can hear, too, as you see it go through your video shot.
Oh, btw, it absolutely could've been a comorant diving. They spend half their life doing that. They're a big, strong birds them. A proper sea bird

Miles. Was that a Kingfisher that flashed across your screen at 2:17 whilst you were looking at the Grebe.

I thin you will find that diving bird was a Grebe
