Dr Nurbakhsh's books on Sufism are simply the very best and most USEFUL resource for understanding Sufism in the English language. The path to the essence of Sufism isn't a particularly easy one for someone who has grown up outside the traditional world of Sufism. The great thing about Dr Nurbakhsh's series Sufism I-VI is that the concepts and processes of the Sufi path are laid out in a systematic form with ample quotations from the classics of the tradition. My favorite of his books is "Spiritual Poverty in Sufism" in which key terms like darwish, ahwal, and waqt are clearly elucidated. The end of the sufi path, like those of other traditions of the East is liberation from being ruled by the lower self so as to be freed to live one's life as an enlightened and spiritually matured individual in society.
