    How To Calibrate A Hygrometer:
    One of the most important things to do to ensure that you're properly looking after your cigars is to calibrate your hygrometer.
    Our of the box, the simplest cigar hygrometers can wildly vary with nearly 10% inaccuracy.
    If your hygrometer is inaccurate, you're effectively flying blind with no real basis for ensuring your cigars are stored in the right environment.
    For instance, if the humidity is reading too low, you'll try to increase it by adding more gels or packs, which could over-humidify your cigars.
    Conversely, if it's reading too high, you may try to dry out the interior and end up ruining your cigars.
    Either way, a calibrated hygrometer is vital.
    Boveda offer highly accurate calibration kits, which allow you to properly calibrate your hygrometer.
    Using a special solution of a special salt in a two-way membrane, these small pouches maintain a specific and accurate level of humidity.
    Two packs are available, which come in either 75% or 32% humidity and are accurate to 0.3% RH. This is much higher than the usual humidity packs that use a mix of salts.
    By leaving your hygrometer in one of these pouches for 24 hours, you will be able to see what your hygrometer reads. You will then be able to adjust your analogue or digital hygrometer to be properly calibrated at the humidity in that bag.
    If you own a Boveda Smart Sensor, you can even do a 2-step calibration process, this makes it even more accurate as the calibration kit is exposed to different ranges over two 24-hour periods.
    However, using the calibration kit is not exclusive to Boveda's smart sensor and you can use it with any hygrometer.
    A common method is to use a soda cap of salt mixed with water, which is added to a zip lock bag with your hygrometer. However, Boveda have studied this in their lab and due to the different salts available on the market, you can have as much as a 10% variance. Therefore, this "tried-and-tested" method isn't very accurate.

    You have bad info on the “salt test”. Provided you have more salt than water, you will ALWAYS have 75%RH. It’s a property of salt. No different than saying water boils at 212 F.

    Hi guys I was wondering should I buy the one step calibration with the 75 rh boveda even though I ideally want to keep my Cubans at a 65 rh. How can I change this down? Is there any way to use the calibration at a 65 straight away? Would be great to hear back !

    • @Bespokeunit
      @Bespokeunit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jasper, the 75rh, is used a the baseline to calibrate a hygrometer and not store cigars at (as its the most accurate RH solution Boveda makes). Once your hygrometer is calibrated you can set your environment to whatever level to desire. Cheers - Paul

    Hi. Thank you for the video. But if I use boveda pack in a tupperdor is not so important to calibrate my hygrometr becuse every pack is made for a particular HR, correct? Thanks!

    • @Bespokeunit
      @Bespokeunit  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Technically you are correct, but if you're going to be keeping cigars with a hygrometer, you'd want the hygrometer to be as accurate as possible anyways.

    I have recently done the Boveda 75%RH calibration for 36 hours and got the straight forward 75% humidity reading from the hygrometer. I then placed the hygrometer in my tupperdor with size 60 69% boveda and got the exact 69% reading. Basically I am asking if this does occur, where hygrometers read the precise RH on the first try. The hygrometer I have has been known by other users to give them issues.

    • @Bespokeunit
      @Bespokeunit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alvaro,
      It sounds like the hygrometer is properly calibrated. The packs are quite efficient at creating the desired Rh, especially when new and even more so in an airtight tupperdor. Do you have another hygrometer you could potentially use to test so as to give yourself peace of mind?

    If you reset the Boveda Butler, do you have to recalibrate?

    • @Bespokeunit

      Hi there,
      Nah, you're fine. Resetting doesn't reset the calibration as well!

      I also checked in the app even after it was reset and it still shows recalibration info. I am assuming so but not sure.

    • @Bespokeunit
      @Bespokeunit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this never gets wiped from the butler unless you perform another calibration. Resetting basically removes its association with your devices.

    What about built in digital hygrometer?

    • @Bespokeunit
      @Bespokeunit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Built-in digital hygrometers can usually be removed from the humidor, they're designed like this. Have you tried this with yours? You'd need to remove it to be able to calibrate it.

      It's not uncommon for hygrometers to be off and we've seen some off by about as much. What hygrometer is it? Are you using the proper calibration kits? Where are you leaving the kits while you undertake the calibration?

  • @malk6277
    @malk6277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Meh - not feeling much trust here after you and Boveda dissed the salt calibration. The factors that can introduce significant variance into the calibration are if too much water is used, or if one fails to use distilled water, or fails to wait long enough for the humidity to stabilise. Solution: don't make those mistakes.
    Boveda just wants to sell you their own overpriced baggies of sodium chloride folks. Don't believe the hype.

      Hey there Malk,
      In our eyes, it comes down to the amount of time and effort that someone wants to devote to this, like anything else in life. We prefer to leave the work to Boveda and trust in the product which is easy enough to use. If someone wants to delve deeper into the different processes (and the science behind them) for calibrating a hygrometer, there are plenty of resources on the web to scratch that itch.

      @@Bespokeunit A ready made kit could be a time saver to a degree, although once you've learned how to do the calibration once, you'll have the materials on hand to easily do it again the next time, so it is a one-time investment of your time to learn (and it doesn't take long... 20-30 minutes or so to compare a few info sources). You could say taking the time to learn about the Boveda product, and to acquire it, levels the playing field somewhat. If I ordered the Boveda product or went to buy it in a store, it would take me longer to get it than it does to pour some salt into a bottle cap, add a few drops of water, and put that in a sealed container with my hygrometers...
      But I think what I object to is that in the video, you don't pitch the advantage as a time saver: you emphasise the Boveda claim that the NaCl calibration procedure is woefully inaccurate, and I'm afraid that spills over into marketing hype. The procedure is much more accurate than the claims they made portray it as, if you simply avoid the pitfalls mentioned. In other words, done correctly it is as accurate as any home user will need it to be, and doing it correctly isn't rocket science at all. This is why I mentioned trust: I think as a TH-cam channel, you probably want your viewers to feel like you are imparting informed and sincere opinions rather than providing an infomercial. So I'm inviting you to consider whether this video feels like the former or the latter, in view of the above considerations. All the best.

    on most vids like this...instead of help help help --> it's sell sell!! sell!!!
    the digital ones need batteries, and re calibration after changing them, right?
    all of a sudden the analog hygrometers are garbage? wow
    how far off can they be most of the time with a 50 count humidor? not much i'm sure
    the digital ones look so generic (fact) ali express must've had a big sale on buying in bulk ;

      Video talks about using Boveda calibration kits which are the easiest/most convenient option for calibrating. We've written an additional guide on calibrating (bespokeunit.com/cigars/hygrometers/calibrate/) though we don't recommend using the "salt test" to do it.

    Buddy you lost all the credibility of this video when you said (about the Salt test): "It sounds kind of ludicrous.." and "I never actually did it".
    You then realized how premature and presumptuous you were (given the abundance of scientific literature available validating the the salt test) and tried to patch things up in the comments section by saying you "think the Boveda is better because it saves you time".
    Clearly you're getting a kickback from Boveda but if you want to build trust on your content try to just highlight the benefits of whatever it is you're trying to sell, instead of criticizing what you're not qualified to critize.
