Dear Ralfy, well I did not have either of your choices. But I was determined to try a small amount with Bunnahabhain 12 making up 85% of the blend with 15 % Ben Riach Smokey 10. It is in the jar for a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed 🤞 and kindest regards as always. S.

We have a tiny village here in Norfolk called Happisburgh... but it's pronounced Haysbra.

Not forgetting other Norfolk delights - Stiffkey pronounced stookey & Wymondham pr Windham.

Ever since I first heard Enya I am always so sad that Gaelic and Goidelic languages are not flourishing as they deserve. They have magic about them that should be cultivated and shared, together with whisky culture.

Did that before with a splash of Ardbeg in a Speysider. Great result. Ardbeg 10 works very well. Rounds it up and lifts the whole significantly. Worth trying.

You know what's quite fun Ralfy? My favourite whiskies are light-to-medium peated ones, but there aren't all that many of them around anymore these days. So what I'll do is look for distilleries that make heavily peated and unpeated malts, buy a bottle of each, enjoy half of both bottles, and then I'll add both remaining halves together to make a bottle of... single blended malt or whatever you would want to call it. Not only is it delicious 90% of the time, you also get three different experiences out of two bottles. I recommend leaving them to marry for at least three months and using at least 200mL of each. I think it's safe to say that my most interesting experiment to date has been the volatile concoction of Edradour and Ballechin.

My favourite best value home blend for fireside supping...50% Campbeltown loch with 50% J&B Rare...drink it straight away with a dribble of water. Smooth, lightly peated, full of flavour and affordable.

Funny how Americans get Chevrolet correct though. English, in all its forms, is always inconsistent and a huge challenge to learners to master those.

We can’t judge those who don’t chase flavor anymore than we would like them looking us like crazies for spending $100 on malts on our flavor chase.

I love experimenting with infinity bottles. I've learned to avoid combining sulfur notes with vegetal notes because it usually ends up tasting like cabbage or asparagus. And also to be careful with Laphroaig 😂

Great experiment! Gaelic or broadly speaking Celtic languages belong to the Indo-European family and as such are kin to Germanic, Romance languages, etc. What you are referring to is most probably a theory that there is a sizeable substrate in Gaelic of non-Indo-European origin. The idea, in very simplified terms, being that Neolithic farmers had spread west from what we call today Middle East across Europe all the way to the British Isles, so when the Celts (or Celtic language) got there they absorbed a lot of the native words from the language of those Neolithic farmers.
As for modern day English, it needs a Vuk Karadzic or Ataturk to reform orthography and align it to the spoken language. I don’t see it happening in the US. Maybe the UK will pioneer it as so many other things it pioneered in the past?

I wish I could find old casks nowadays..
They used to be plentiful and cheap in my poncey town in antique / junk shops..
    no chance now.
My local distillery was selling new make and a wee cask for one to play with and mature your own whisky..
    bloody expensive game though.
I DID, buy oak chips to throw into my home made wine...
It didn't bring much in the way of results... but.. that was then..
I'll try again with more patience

Bowmore's "small batch" has been a big hit with my friends who are not deep into whiskey. I don't mind it at all as a social drink myself, though I know it divides opinion a bit with the hobbyists.

The logic of the first few minutes was a bit all over the place but I think the overall video message is sound. More people should experiment with blending in small quantities. I do it all the time now after watching Ralfy for years. I have a lot of whisky these days and am generally less precious about but I also have a bit more of snack for what might lift a particular dram at a certain point.

Hi ralfy, how long would you reckon the marriage process will take when you create your blends filling up 5cl bottles to the brim? Will they virtually not marry together at all over a few weeks? In other words, is the air gap mandatory for good results?
I had a disappointing much too expensive single cask bottle of heavily sherried old pulteney 12 y.o. cask strength. I spiced it up with port askaig 100 proof and a hint of edradour and it's a different beast now. But I wonder if it would get even better provided more air to breathe.
