People in the U. S. don't believe that. I'm native Californian and I live in W. Europe and I'm here to tell you that what you say is 100% true. Europeans ask me all the time about what they see on the internet and if it's true or not. True story. I get asked alot about San Francisco because it's a popular destination for foreign tourists and I tell them that they may get shot or robbed or worse. They believe me because of what they see on the news. Go ahead and don't believe it, I know better because I'm here and not there. It's why I moved.

@@twistedsdIt doesn’t matter. I work at Oakland Airport and I meet multiple people everyday that were robbed while somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can still fly when your ID has been stolen, but you’re subjected to extra security before you’re allowed to go to your gate. One lady that I met from Kentucky was robbed of literally everything except the clothes on her back while she was in San Francisco.

I guarantee that if this occurred in Singapore, the gunman would receive the death penalty by hanging if he used a gun to shoot or threaten the victim. Also, if charged with a crime, there is a mandatory, fixed punishment ranging from a number of years to the maximum, making it impossible for Pamela Price to reduce it to five years in prison. Singapore doesn’t play around.

Do not go to the gas stations near Oakland airport before you return your rental, but don't you ever read the news? AVOID Oakland at any cost!
Seriously! The gas stations on 98th Ave down the street from the Oakland Airport have speakers blaring telling customers to stay with their property at all times. Even going inside to pay or get a receipt is plenty of time for you to get robbed. Criminals are literally waiting IN THE PARKING LOT. You would figure that the police would place a couple of officers there because there are so many robberies at that place. The gas stations on Hegenburger (where this robbery was) might be worse.

Robbers in NOLA frequently target people carrying a firearm. The firearm is more valuable than the wallet and the cell phone. Even the dumbest victim knows better than to reach for anything when multiple robbers have guns pointed at them and are going through their pockets.
These robberies are repeatedly committed in cars with dealer tags, which have been illegal for years in California. Cars with no plates/dealer plates need to get pulled over and searched, on the spot every time they pass a cop.

I used to visit San Francisco and Oakland for vacation related activities but I no longer do that, the crime rate in that whole area caused me to stop visiting years ago.

Recently, a plain clothed officer responding to a series of burglaries was killed on duty. It’s incredibly difficult. For starters everybody that was screaming “DEFUND THE POLICE” a few years ago is finally getting what they wanted, there isn’t even a police chief for OPD right now & the mayor is making sure of that. She recently rejected a list of 3 candidates for the job. There is critical staffing issues and OPD can’t keep up with all the calls. And then what would be the point in even arresting burglars if the DA refuses to prosecute them because it’s “non-violent”. OPD officers have already gone on record to say those burglars are back on the streets in less than a week.
It's not the cops...it's city hall not allowing them to do their job.

These days, I would not even drive near the Bay Area.
My problem with this is California's ban on citizens carrying a gun for protection! In California, if a robber pulls a gun on you and pull out your gun to defend yourself then you, the victim, is getting arrested which is very unfair and wrong imo. Innocent people do not want to use a gun but they should be allowed to as a means to defend themselves against robbers and being assaulted.

My post was censored. The tip off we were heading towards social decay and collapse was decades ago when we started to see homelessness being normalized and drug use of highly addictive narcotics in public normalized and considered as recreational "choices". Drug addiction is not driven by choice it is driven by compulsion. The robberies in Oakland are the result of addicts stealing to feed drug habits which were considered by the City as victimless crimes of "choice". They didn't understand the connection between narcotic use and crime even though the data 100% confirms it.

Someone with a powerful addiction isn't going to be able to work or manage finances and addiction symptoms at the same time and they need to get money for the next dose. Methadone requires verification and detox usually before being administered treatment. It doesn't necessarily mean a person doesn't want to follow rules for their dropping out. It is usually about someone relapsing..

The guy that she fired last year (Laron Armstrong) was born and raised in Oakland, people respected him, and he genuinely cared about Oakland…..so of course he gets fired and hasn’t been replaced more than 1 year later. ALSO, he was cleared of ALL wrongdoing by an independent city board for what he was fired for in the first place. He’s now suing the city of Oakland and he’s probably going to win. Previously fired Oakland Police Chiefs who were fired also sued and won.
Even though they are arrested, then what? How long are they gonna be in the jail? Jail time means nothing to them.
The city of JOKE-LAND is Lawless... this piece also forgot to mention that another major retailer on the next block that closed was Walmart... due to rampant and normalization of shoplifting and assault. It's next to In-n-Out which is in the process of closing as well.
If they are found and arrested they will be released the next day on zero bail.
Where there are scholars, there will be crime.

The Hagenberger corridor is scary but the same thing happens right at Jack London Square.
Walk from BART to the State Building and chances are good you don't make it unscathed.
Next, Emoryville in the Shellmond Corridor. I've sat at that Denny's and watched people getting jacked. Berkeley? University Ave? The Marina? Obama's "fundamental transformation" is in full swing.
The robberies of rentals especially at the gas stations on Hegenberger is so common now. Oakland airport rental agencies should warn against SPECIFICALLY going to the stations outside of the airport, probably Oakland too.
They should just put Scott Adams picture on the front door with text that says stay away from the usual suspects.
The last time that I rented a car at Oakland Airport, the rental car company charged me more because I got gas a few miles away in Hayward. The rental car companies are making money off of this too.

im not American but i feel so sorry for the Bay Area, went there in 2001 and it was great to be a tourist there, felt safer than LA and had a good time, even stayed in Oakland for a month, hope things get better
That was over 20 yrs. ago. These days it is a literal free for all. Alot of children being murdered in cars from all the gang related drive by freeway shootings, not to mention the rest of it. True story.
I'm an Oakland native. I'm glad you had a good time there, while you had a chance. Personally, I have always felt safer in Los Angeles, but to each his own.
