  • Parisi Emami-Naeini, M.D., M.P.H., a retina specialist at the Tschannen Eye Institute at the UC Davis Eye Center in Sacramento, California, discusses the possible easons for takeaway finding from research she presented at the American Society of Retina Specialists meeting today: Pars plana vitrectomy procedure has become the preferred method for repairing detached retinas. The methods and instruments for performing pars plana vitrectomy have improved, she explains, and it takes less time than the scleral buckle procedure. Meanwhile the reimbursement rate for retinal detachment repair has fallen, creating even more of incentive to perform a procedure that can be done more quickly, she notes. Another factor is that retina specialists in fellowship programs are performing fewer scleral buckle procedures, so as they enter clinical practices they are less likely to perform a procedure that they have less experience with.
