He would have died near the end of that term. He died on January 5, 1933. In those days inauguration day was March 4. That would have been a hard situation for the country to navigate. A new President who was just a "lame duck" for two months.
Coolidge was more successful in reducing taxes and in lowering the debt, because he didn't have to deal with a Cold War... The US was a much more isolationist country at the time.
As I make these comments, I have not read Amity Shlae's book on Calvin Coolidge yet. A question is presented:Calvin Coolidge, Better Than Reagan? While Reagan himself made public statements in holding Coolidge favorably, there is one thing about the Coolidge Presidency that was better than Reagan and every President who has succeeded Coolidge. The U.S. government financially was in the black every year of the Presidency of Calvin Coolidge. Financial statements of the U.S. Treasury for those years verify that as well as show that revenue and expenditures each year under Coolidge never exceeded $5 Billion dollars in each category.
+Alan Leake I read her book. Coolidge was a great president, but Harding was better. Both men were better than the one who came before them both--the odious Woodrow Wilson. The book is a bit dull because Coolidge was sane and sane isn't exciting. I read a biography of Teddy Roosevelt and that was exciting, but then again TR was a bit unbalanced.
+sleedolfine15 :Harding better than Coolidge?!? That is open to a major debate. Many historical students of Harding have noted that if it were not for his campaign manager, Harry Daugherty, Harding would not have been nominated in 1920. Harding himself is quoted as an intellectual political lightweight where he was not a leader of people but let brighter people lead him. Also, shortly after becoming President, Harding is quoted is saying he was way over his head in trying to become President and really should never have been President.
Alan Leake Harding's great strength was that he was smart enough to let himself be led around by brighter people. He choose a brilliant cabinet--especially his Secretary of the Treasury, who formulated a low tax, small government strategy which produced great economic growth..
Reagan neither increased nor decreased domestic spending, but kept it constant after adjusting for inflation and population increase. The sole reason why the budget deficit was $73 billion higher when Reagan left office than when he came into office was because of the increase in defense spending.

Reagan was a great man, who did a hell of a lot in regards to restoring American optimism, and played a big role in the end of the USSR. Coolidge really was the ultimate "less government spending" POTUS. There's a reason the '20s were roaring under Coolidge.
I prefer Coolidge to Reagan. Economically, Reagan was the most effective President in American history. However, he was somewhat reckless in terms of foreign policy and his policies regarding drug use.
What a shame that Coolidge didn't serve another term while FDR held the reigns of power for 12 years
He didn’t want to. Another thing to admire about him.

Coolidge was far ahead of his time...
Coolidge was more successful in reducing taxes and in lowering the debt, because he didn't have to deal with a Cold War... The US was a much more isolationist country at the time.
Read Rothbard on The Great Depression

+Alan I like how he proved that a financial dip can be handled just fine without the treasury.

Calvin Coolidge "Rocks."
I thought I was one of the few conservatives who felt President Reagan was a government grower.
Just look at the stats. He tripled government spending. While he was Governor of CA he signed the most liberal pro-abortion law in the Country.
Reagan neither increased nor decreased domestic spending, but kept it constant after adjusting for inflation and population increase. The sole reason why the budget deficit was $73 billion higher when Reagan left office than when he came into office was because of the increase in defense spending.
For presidents in our lifetime who had the least increase in size of the federal government, Clinton and Obama lead the way
People claim he slowed down the rate of growth. He was in office 8 years.

I learned so much from this lecture! Thank you!!
It wasn't called the Roaring Twenties for nothing.
I want to watch , listen and read anything you write. Thank you.

Reagan lucked out by having Thatcher come into her office at the same time as they both shared nearly identical everything...
True, although they disagreed on abortion.
Four wonderful books by a wonderful author.
As I recall, tariffs were the main source of tax revenue for the US except during wartime.
As it should be.
Both are equally as good in his own reasons
One problem that Reagan had that Coolidge didn't was the trade deficit.
No, higher tarriffs after WWI caused low amounts of imports.
You have a trade deficit with your local supermarket. "Trade deficit" is not a problem. Budget deficit is.
Great lecture.
Hey Shlaes, Obama NEVER had a budget!!! Since you are talking about THE Deficit - you didn't mention that when Obama left office we were $20T in debt?
Amity is a wonderful communicator, but this talk is a little dumber down. Understandable, given the audience.
I was better than every president.
Hey Shlaes, Obama NEVER had a budget!!!
