  • This fourth video in the sequence from Lucy Marianna on 9th October 2012 shows the 68mm mesh gill nets - 'red mullet gear' - being hauled. (The others show the setting of this gear and 90 mm gill nets earlier in the day; the extraction of fish from large mesh monkfish (angler) gill nets, and the hauling of the 90 mm nets). Hauling was underway by 11.50 am. In addition to red mullet, the catch included scad, lesser spotted dogfish, streaked gurnard, cuckoo wrasse, pollock, pouting, ling and one octopus (capture shown on the video, at 8:45). Hauling was completed by 12.30 pm. Stills photography and other information of this session are available on the Pisces-RFR website at www.pisces-rfr.org/UK/Fisherie...
The video starts with a burst of lesser spotted dogfish, with Coverack visible in the background. At around 1:15 Anthony is extracting a male cuckoo wrasse. At 1.50 Darren is extracting (probably a) streaked gurnard and the first red mullet comes aboard. At 3:20 a characteristic olive backed big eyed pollock comes over the hauler. At 4:30 onwards there is a good view of scad, horse mackerel, being extracted, followed by a ling at around 6:25, more red mullet and another ling and pollock from 6:50. At 10:56 the net temporarily gets caught up in the hauler. From 11:30 there is a close view of red mullet.
From 13:30 the video concludes with Lucy Marianna returning to the Helford estuary mooring.

Really nice video. Thanks for sharing. I like to see how other operations work to see if I can use ideas to improve or make mine easier. Thanks again.

what do you do if loads of kelp comes up in the net. also how do you keep it all tidy when extracting the catch so the net will be ready for use again, do you have to repack it all tidy?

On the weed - they have to avoid it by choosing time of year, time of tidal cycle (avoid fast running tides) and the nets are only in the water for a couple of hours because they are going for price quality premium. In addition to kelp there is 'glit' or mayweed - slimy algae in spring, covers everything, fish go quiet. If they hit weed they just have to pick it out, takes ages (as do crabs). On stowing - you can see Darren on the right using the machine on the back of the boat, as they clear the nets, spreads top and bottom ropes, and drops net down into bin tidy and ready for redeployment

Yes, it *helps* do exactly that - its called a net flaker - e.g. www.spencercarter.com/products/netflakers.html

wire? 0,20? 0,30? 0,40? height nets? The mesh size is double? 34mm+34mm? or 68 mm Half mesh ?

It depends on the fishery and the boat - With these the boats may set these nets first thing, then clear other nets (bigger meshes, longer soaks, further offshore), and then return on the same day, when a significant proportion will still be alive, and all very fresh
