LOL, I just DNF'd Les Mis (got in about 300pp so I think I gave it a good try) because I found it too heavy-handed and preachy and manipulative (while I still couldn't feel anything for the characters because Hugo just kept telling me for 20 pages at a stretch how I was supposed to feel and why). I know everyone but me loves it. I don't care for the musical either, so I should have been forewarned! 😂 I am very purposefully staying away from A Little Life. I haven't read Tess but don't think I'll plan to! I have seen an adaptation (BBC miniseries?) - that's enough for me!🤷♀
Oh no Erin, not Les Mis! Lol it’s impressive though that you made it through 300 pgs not liking it. To be fair I wanted to throw it out the window a few times (the sections on Napoleon and the sewers…). I saw that movie musical that came out with Anne Hathaway-yuck!!! I felt like I could see into every actor’s nostrils with how close the camera was. Everyone on BookTube seems to love A Little Life and I just thought it was laughably overdone and I’ve not heard good things about Yanagihara’s most recent novel so I think I’ll stay far away.
Italian neo-realist films wow, - that would be like "Mama Roma?" That one kept repeating in my head for a while even though I'm not a fan of it. I've not been a big Hardy fan either, though for some reason I started reading a lot of him for one particular period - the "Mama Roma" effect again! Polanski is one thing AND Ms. Kinski's actor father Klaus was hardly a non-controversial figure either!
I would say more like Bicycle Thieves or Rome Open City in terms of Italian Neorealism (highly recommend both those titles!). Oof yeah how could I forget about Klaus Kinski 🤢
@@shelf-reflections7549 Usually nominated as the most difficult actor in history on top of everything else 😁😸. I will look into those ☝️ titles thank you. Kinski tried to play a good guy in the thriller "Schizoid" he was a psychologist in a fuzzy sweater 😸😁, it came off more as a comedy!
Ugh Angel and his self-righteousness sucked 😂 The movie is worth watching for the sake of watching a well-made movie and if you by chance enjoyed the novel and want to see a faithful adaptation
oi i love these videos my favorite book to movie adaptation channel is the book wins
Yeeeeeessss the book usually wins (I guess except in the case of Tess 😂)

I’m so glad I saw this comment. I’m nearing p 300 of _Les Miserables_ and wavering on DNFing it for the same reasons.

Oh no David, not you too! 😭 (just kidding, I know it’s not for everyone lol)

I didn’t find Angel very appealing in the novel; I haven’t watched the film.
