- The Cape May National Wildlife Refuge's Two Mile Unit offers a serene escape into nature, perfect for birdwatchers, hikers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Located just south of Wildwood Crest, this protected area spans dunes, marshlands, and forest, providing diverse habitats for migratory birds and other wildlife.
Visitors can explore several trails, including the 1.5-mile Dune Trail, which offers beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape May’s unique coastal ecosystem.
The Two Mile Unit is also a prime spot for spotting shorebirds, raptors, and monarch butterflies, especially during migration seasons, making it a must-visit for nature lovers year-round.

Sara and I love to explore new places. One day one in Mid to late August I asked her if we could go to see both ending points of the Island. One Sunday we decided to see if we could find where the Island ended. We found the Wildlife Refuge and walked the trails. We are excited that we will, very soon, be able to walk that shoreline. Another good Job Joey!
It’s so beautiful here and peaceful. Glad you explored it
Thank you! I didn’t know this was there. So refreshing.
Peaceful area to explore. 👍
Great video! Regarding your remarks about this preserve as being the last example of native vegetation of the Jersey shore and how development destroyed the rest, I was a witness to that in a sense. In the mid 1950's, my family purchased a vacation home on Ohio Avenue in Cape May, with the landmark water tank at the end of the street giving us a skyline. These homes were a development and depending upon the model house, the price was between 8 and 9 thousand dollars. In our backyards, the full length of the street was untouched vegetation just like you were showing in this video. It was there for years and gradually disappeared as new homes were built.
We sold the home in 1969 and today it has been replaced with a new build worth 1.7 million dollars. Amazing how things change.
Wow how things change. It’s the vegetation that protected the inner state. Everytime one gets destroyed we loose that protection
A very nice tour. Thanks!
You should check it out next time. It is so beautiful
I remember seeing coast guard recruits running on the beach late 80's

Joey, I just love this video. Traditionally, my family and I stay in Cape May and drive over to Wildwood for all our adventures. We like to stay in Cape May for all the same reasons that you showed in this video......Nature. What a great new trail system....one more thing to do when we come down next summer. Much Love & Cheers to both you & your lovely wife. Thanks again and please keep 'em coming. ♥♥♥ PS - Out of all the wonderful and beautiful creatures that live in the area, you just had to go and find a snake. Thanks a lot.....just kidding.....it was very cool. Creepy but cool.👍
So is the U.S,C.G. boot camp still there? And if so s it completely seperate from the sanctuary?
Yes and no. It’s still there, it’s not used and it’s separate
All enlisted personnel of the Coast Guard take basic training at TRACEN Cape May across the harbor.
Last year we were coming back from the Lobster House when we stopped. I went on both dune trails. It was very peaceful. At the end of the last dune trail there's a fence on the right that says No Trespassing, property of the US Government
There is also a bird sanctuary in Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Sea Isle at the end coming in from Avalon. They have been there for years and years!! 😸😸😸😸
Coming here in the 70s my family and I could walk on that section of the beach in the summer as well. I have very found memories of my father jogging all the way to the inlet and back. We were very intrigued by the naval base beyond the sand banks. I remember being afraid to swim in that unprotected part of the beach
That used to be part of the us coast gard base
That's what I thought as well, that it was part of the US Coast Guard Base? Joey isn't that so? I am so interested in finding out. The Coast Guard Base should still be there. It is one of their largest bases and extremely instrumental in the safety of our NJ Coastline. - Cheers
@@kathrynkathryn5493 yes that's what it used to be that place is a good place to take a walk I've been there when they first opened it up to the public
Hey. I am working on a video are the base. There is a cool history there
The beach part may reopen Oct. 1.
Very interesting..never knew about what about the mosquitoes and bugs!
They weren’t bad that day since the wind was blowing West and not East.
Going to Cape May next month and I want to do this deciding to do the day one or the night one. Oops sorry I thought this was the rail bikes.
The rail bikes are a ton of fun
Your presentation brings out all the beautiful feels.
Thank you so much!
I love this I go out and run every day but I doubt that Jogging is Allowed on them trails I was raised in Cape may County Middle township where i was raised.
