I actually love the comparison between God being the sun and the devil being the ocean, such an interesting way to put it.
As above so below
both giveth and both taketh away, in different ways they both play and slay throughout the day.
I think it's just the two main things one can be covered by in California so why not
After listening to this song so many times, something struck out. "California, will you marry me? Let God be the sun and in the ocean they will bury me" and "If the sun was God, I'd be covered in faith, if the ocean was the devil, I'd be covered in hate". This just stood out one day because they repeat this metaphor more than just in the chorus. I haven't thought about it much, but the first thing my brain came up with was that we live our lives faithfully yet blindly and in the end: we just end up with the bad. We can spend our lives pretending imminent danger isn't around the corner or down the shore. Also, the "pretty illusion" is brought up a lot too. Again, like we disguise the ugly in our daily lives and blind ourselves, we choose to see only the pretty things and pretend ugly things are pretty. I might be wrong in every aspect, but this song is powerful.
I actually thought it had a different meaning, perhaps that California and I suppose the West changes you. He takes his time choosing his clothes, trying to make everything pretty around him because pretty is what others see, but what about what we want? That's why it's such a goddamn shame. We live to other's expectations without even realizing it. We're never free, but wouldn't it be better to just drown away in the ocean, where the sun can no longer blind us?

I first heard the Neighborhood about 2 years ago on Pandora, WDYWFM. I was hypnotized. My first thought was this band is way to magnetic to go unnoticed...then again I was okay with that because most people don't deserve music this good. Over a year later, I heard Sweater Weather on MTV and on the radio. I'm glad more people are gravitating towards them...then again, I prefer music like this to stay underground and not go mainstream. My same thoughts with Lana del Rey. I just feel the mainstream audience is filled with ignorant ears who don't understand true artistry...they'll just think It looks good with there "hipster" "indie" or "grunge" image.

For a year or so I listened to one single song from the neighbourhood. Afraid, and its because I felt connected to that song, The Neighbourhood overall is great, but I never really looked into more of their songs, Now I am glad I did

If they go mainstream, radios as well will probably replay their songs too many times, causing it to be intentionally annoying. That goes with people with phones or mp3 players. Pop music gets very irritating.

I think the whole vibe of this song is supposed to feel bittersweet.. like he knows this place isn't perfect and it has its shit once you see past the polished glamorous surface. but the line 'i'm so west coast" expresses how perfectly he fits in Cali.. and "California will you marry me?" pretty much sums it up. It isn't perfect, he doesn't like every inch of it, it's got its bullshit, just like him. he hates himself sometimes and he hates the place sometimes but he wouldn't want to trade it for anything, ever.

I love The NBHD. You need to be into this music to understand it and like it and I get it why some people don't get the lyrics nor the rhythm. But it's better, I think. Their music is like my deepest thoughts put all together in a song and I don't like anyone invading my personal space. That's why I like the fact that not many know this band, or maybe even the Arctic Monkeys and The 1975. Their music is so slow and quiet and calms me every time. I love the truth and the sarcasm in the lyrics.

I feel like this song perfectly captures California. It’s happy and chillin on the surface and if you really look it’s super depressing and superficial. We all live to look the best superficially in the hot weather that is Cali. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here, but it’s sad and California is too fucking crowded. There is far too many people but it’s also pretty cool bc u get midwesternppl trying to escape their boring lives, foreigners trying to make a fresh start. It’s a mixture of sad dead dreams and hopeful people.

a story fuckin time:
me and my bestfriend lived in this shithole town in finland. the place wasnt that great but we managed because we were young and we had imagination. the best thing in countryside is that there is a lot of space outside. and oh boys we spend some time outside. we loved explore places like other side of the town, forests and the railway. few of those places has special place in my heart. one of them is this underpass close to my friend's house. that underpass was painted with pictures of airplanes (they lived next of an airport thing (it was the pride of this town)). somebody was ofc spraypainted over the paintings. and there it was. the legendary "i'm so west coast. and it's a goddamn shame" graffiti. it was our favorite.
the funny thing is that i didn't know where it was from. and i didn't have to know. we didn't relate to that text. it was obscure to us.
and tonight i wanted to know what does that graffiti mean.
now i sit here (in my new place, in a new city, my friend far from here) and understand why someone wanted to write that there. the lyrics of this song really hits home. this small town in finland is not sunny or near of an ocean or anything like that. it was cold and dark in winters, and warm at summers when sun didnt go down at nights. but it was our hometown. it was place where we grew up and fuck we had fun! i hated that place because things weren't easy but now i kinda love it because of that. i have so many beautiful memories alongside the bad ones. i miss those times and i miss my friend so so much. i miss our adventures and movie nights and houseparties and our fave trash can which wasn't outside of our fave store and our stupid school full of idiots. now i have to grow up into an adult and move forward. i just wish that i would have appreciate everything more when i still had it. it was great.

I live in California, I'm So West Coast, and it is a Goddamn shame, because ive lived here my whole life, I never want to go, I love the smell of sea water, love the feeling of the waves hitting my legs, love walking down the boardwalks, so being a West Coaster isn't really a goddamn shame, but it also is at the same time, the West coast can do that to you sometimes.
Theses guys know how to make great songs. It always sounds good and clean asf. Definitely my fav band now.
