    To add a bit of knowledge:
    This Codex was the first book ever to mention a (then) enigmatic entity named Ynnead living in the infinity circuit.
    GW really played the long game with this one.

      I just flipped through the codex and couldn't find it, what page number? There's only about half a dozen pages worth of lore in this thing anyway.

    • @changelingiris9409
      @changelingiris9409 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SCHMALLZZZ IIRC it was a story at the end of the book about a Farseer (maybe Eldrad - not trusting my memory) connecting to the infinity circuit and listening to the choir of Eldar souls forming the voice of Ynnead.

    Wow, Eldrad's opinion on humanity has changed over 30+ years of the lore changing. From we will kill all humans to sending ambadsadors to the Imperial Regent and having Ulthwe fight alongside the Imperium often against Chaos, Orks, and Tyrannids.

      To be fair, a LOT happened in those years in-universe as well; two more Hive Fleets hit, Failbaddon succeeded, and suddenly the Eye of Terror was the goddamn full-bodied Terror of the Cicatrix Maledictum. Plus, an Imperial regent with the unusual combination of Authority and Common Sense which made diplomatic relations possible. After all, anybody other than a Primarch would have been shot for heresy if they tried to buddy up with Xenos outside of an immediate tactical alliance of convenience.
      So, not so strange after all.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The Chaos Gods are basically Daemons, being collective manifestations of thoughts and emotions, the Eldar Gods were the same, just created by more 'Sophisticated' minds. Its why Khaine is basically Khorne, but less into Thrash Metal

    • @florian8356

    • @ImrahilToChaos
      @ImrahilToChaos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That doesn’t really explain the reasoning behind why the Avatar “makes sense” to be a daemon. The justification would be that the Eldar Gods were warp beings that had bodies of Wraithbone, which would make the Avatar a smaller fragment of that same reality for Khaine.

      Guilliman is not a daemon, he is a human, difference is Guilliman is Guilliman, he is not powered by thoughts or faith, he is his own person, in theory all life is just warp stuff, that what a soul is, difference between a human and a daemon is one has free will and the other is just thoughts taken form.
      How Guilliman was created does not change the fact he is still a independent life form. If people stop believing in Guilliman he would still exist, daemons are not the same.

    • @Aaron-io8vw

      @@Fourtytwo4242 Primarchs not really human. Guilliman explains this himself to Fabian, the man he makes own of his historitors in first the Dawn of Fire. There made from human genetic material but that's where it ends. Vengeful Spirit and First Heretic confirm the Emperor made a deal with the 4 Ruinous powers to create them and there is a Warp based element of there creation and then reneged on the deal and that's the reason the 4 Chaos gods put aside their great game and work together to cause the heresy as revenge on the Emperor.

    This is the first codex I played with properly.
    It has:
    - The lovely quote on the side about arrogance and firepower.
    - Doom wasn't here!
    - star cannons were the core of the army, but I couldn't build pewter wraithlord models so I just bought a bunch of falcons.
    - wave serpent rules and bright lance rules didn't affect each other, so clearly eldar did a lot of infighting at some point.
    - fireheart, who is amazing and we're still waiting for a model over 20 years later.

    All I remember of Eldar from my childhood as I almost never encountered them at a GW store or an event being fielded by other players since 3rd edition is that Warp Spiders were OP broken nasty to face; Eldar had crazy psychic powers which made chaos sorcerers look tame by comparison and broken as heck strong jet bikes and nasty zappy tanks. They also had really cool looking walkers which although they look cool and intimidating were actually crap on the table top and were easily bested by the ugly boxy full metal dreadnaughts half their size with no real effort, in fact, the only space marine vehicle they posed a serious threat to were Land Speeders.

    Good book - when I started into 40k during 2nd edition I'd just kind of thought of the Eldar as 'the good aliens' (Orks were 'the bad aliens', and Tyranids 'the eat-everything aliens, like from Aliens'; I was quite young), this codex was the one that got me interested in their more nuanced maybe-help-you, maybe-kill-you inscrutability. I even started an army... and never fielded it, since with all those different Aspects I'd keep getting bored of whatever I was painting and move on to a new one, so every squad ended up with like two guys in it, every time I bought an Eldar vehicle I ended up hacking it to pieces to serve as the basis for new Dark Eldar vehicles, and (as always) got distracted inventing backstory rather than just finishing anything (their Farseer's got a starcrossed-lovers thing going on with my Chaos sorceress, it's hilariously awkward for both of them). They look good on the shelf though - Guardians in all-bone armour, Aspects with bone helmets over their usual body colours.
    Also I'm absolutely taking it as fact that the Eldar 'falcon' is a wolf-bird.

      @@justarandomname420 No, seriously. This is ooooold lore all the way back to 2nd edition in the 90's. The body, gender, personality or really _anything_ of the person who puts on a Phoenix Lord's armor doesn't matter at all, because the spirit of the original Phoenix Lord is contained in the armor, and it completely overwrites whoever puts it on. Basically if you're an eldar putting on Asurmen's armor after finding it then you're basically comitting suicide to give Asurmen some fleshy bits which can be used to make his body (which is really the armor) move again. Originally even the exarches were like that. The spirits of the previous exarches to wear that armor were drawn into the spirit stones embedded in it and every time a new exarch donned the armor following the death of the previous wearer they and their experience and skills were added to the armor's, but the personality would normally always be the first exarch to wear the armor because it was usually the strongest of them.
      I suppose this old lore can be argued to be more a case of being possessed by a ghost, but yeah, any eldar can don the armor of a destroyed Phoenix Lord and if they do they will become that Phoenix Lord no matter who or what they were before that moment.

    One thing I think is worth bringing up here to contextualize the vibe of this codex's lore is something that Gav Thorpe said in an interview around this time. He noted that a lot of people seemed to think of the Eldar as "good guys" by default in earlier editions, and when writing their third edition codex he tried to make a point of emphasizing their at-best indifference toward the fate of other species if not outright hostility to those they see as usurping their former position of galactic dominance.
    This codex is also a notable inflection point in which we start to see some divergence in both naming conventions and mechanics of the equipment that the Eldar used to make them more distinct from other factions. For example, this is where Eldar lasguns become lasblasters, Eldar lascannons become bright lances, Eldar plasma guns become starcannons, Eldar missile launchers become reaper launchers, etc. It seemed like part of a move to create more mechanical distinction between the factions when in older editions different factions would often share similar kinds of rules.

    The trans comment isn't even incorrect. Because the identity and consciousness of a Phoenix Lord is based upon their armour and not upon the wearer, many of the Phoenix Lords can absolutely be trans by way of having female or male bearers of the title for a Phoenix Lord identifying as the opposite gender.
    I also feel like the codex mischaracterizes the Eldar pretty heavily regarding their view of humanity and also treats them how the Imperium would: With the most reductionist stance possible. Unlike The T'au, Imperium or anyone else, the Eldar are not lead by one or even two or three people. Most Eldar Craftworlds are not hellbent on destroying all humans, and in fact only Biel-Tan tend to be so violent and aggressive. In addition it should be noted they have this attitude towards humans, who are - yenow - the Imperium. Hard to blame them sometimes.

    i always assumed that "saim-hann" was meant to be like "samhain, but eldar"… samhain being the celtic festival marking the end of harvest and beginning of winter (but now basically interchangeable with hallowe'en in some parts, unless perhaps you're a practicing wiccan), which is pronounced a bit like "sowin" or "sow'n" (ow as in "ow! that hurt!", not ow as in "sowing seeds")

    • @robertwareham8466
      @robertwareham8466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, several of the eldar craftworlds are based on the festivals of the celts. Yme Loc is Imbolc, Biel Tan is Beltaine, Lugganath is Lughnasa and Saim Hann is Samhain. I always presumed Saim Hann was pronounced "same hahn", which kinda makes sense (to me) as it basically swaps the vowel sounds of how you would pronounce samhain if you didn't know the correct pronunciation. xD

      Celtic derived names are something of a running theme for Eldar, a lot of their worlds and character names are Celtic based.

      Also, regarding trans Eldar; not sure if it was just fanon, but fairly sure that I’ve read canonically some Banshee are trans - when a male Eldar walks the path of the Banshee, they put aside their male identity and adopt a female one for the duration of their time as a Banshee. Implicitly this could mean that all Eldar are actually gender fluid, although unfortunately I can’t imagine GW would address this in modern fluff (then again, depending on the author that could go badly if it was included in a codex or BL* novel).
      * off topic - manga/anime has ruined me; as I typed this my brain autofilled BL as ‘Boys Love’ rather than ‘Black Library’. 😂

  • @Fourtytwo4242
    @Fourtytwo4242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In theory, phoenix lords can be trans, has I believe the memories of the armor overrides those of the person. This mean if a male puts on the phoenix lord of the screaming banshee armor then he in turn become her. It actually really lore friendly.

    Cheers for another fun video. The total nerfing of all psykers in 3rd ed. was a reaction to Dark Millenium's sometimes broken psychic system (but not as broken as the magic in 4th ed. Warhammer, hoo boy). It had been coming for some time - towards the end of 2nd ed, start of third several new armies appeared with no psykers at all - Sisters, Necons, Tau, and finally Dark Eldar. It took years before the balance swung back a bit (I quite like 9th's pysker rules tbh).
    Oh, and good luck with that diagnosis, however you want it to turn out. I kinda get it as five years back I got diagnosed autistic, in my mid 40s. Yes - I am an autistic oldhammer guy. Hoo boy do I like to find technical faults in your videos, but, no, I will resist shouting them out to the world because NO-ONE likes to hear the brutal truth. Smile, be happy...

    • @ScooterinAB

      Dark Millennium was a blast, but yeah, they were some of the most broken rules in the game. But GW's overcorrection in 3rd edition that basically made most psychic powers just a gun was also dumb.

    The Web of Skulls always annoyed me because it was the weapon given to the Dark Reaper Exarch model. Because of course, the leader of a squad of long-range heavy weapons guys is a perfect fit for a bolas and a pistol. And yes, I know in 2ed when the model was released, Exarchs were independent characters, so he could go forwards with your attack squads, but it just felt so off-brand. Except for the skulls, I guess.

    • @steinarbergstl5799
      @steinarbergstl5799 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. That's why in 2nd edition I scratchbuilt a sort of bright lance for mine from a sprue-frame, snipped the web off the mini and gave it to my Striking Scorpion exarch instead (because in the 2nd edition codex there's a short story about a scorpion exarch ambushing an enemy squad, and he was armed with a web of skulls).

    • @steinarbergstl5799
      @steinarbergstl5799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. It's the same one. Was the first eldar vehicle released apart from the jetbikes, and it's remained the same ever since and the base template for all other eldar gravtanks. The datasheets for the Falcon and Wave Serpent were there back in 2nd edition as well, but no models. You'd have to scratch build them yourself if you wanted one.
