Great sounding 12-String, and it looked like it was pretty easy to play.
I don't believe there is any replacement for a 12-String Rickenbacker, they are their own thing.
Most certainly a candidate for locking tuners (if there is even enough room).
Not having the access relief-cut go all the way through the headstock does make restringing them a challenge.
      Great review, Thank You

A couple things. Only RIC strings a 12 string in this order. All others string it like the acoustic 12.
The 5th knob's magic happens with ric-o-sound and two amps. It's a balance control between your amps.

Locking tuners are completely unnecessary on a Rickenbacker 12-string. I’ve had my 330/12 stay in tune literally for months at a time. I think the key is to make sure the nut slots are cut and dressed correctly.

Rickenbackers are the real 'parallel universe' guitars: it's like they evolved completely independently of other brands and solved all the same problems in completely different ways.
It reminds me a little of some Soviet technology in that they've kind of achieved the same thing, but with different parts and slightly different logic and different materials.

To be fair Trogly tends to demo the guitars really “dry”, on the clean tones at least. To my ear it rarely makes the guitars sound good. The advantage a 12 string then has is that it is an inherently fuller sound and sounds better in such a “dry” clean scenario.

I think if you had done a side by side comparison with another 12 string you would have seen the greatest feature of a Ric 12. The tuning. Octaves and primes are switched on a Ric. So your down strum sounds mostly normal, the up-strum gets the jangle. The opposite of just about everyone else's 12 string. Most electric 12 bridges won't even let you install the strings that way. Great review, thanks for showing something unusual.

That's not how Ric-O-Sound works. The output nearest the strap button is a regular output. The second output requires a stereo, or TRS plug. You send it to the separate Ric-O-Sound box & from there it splits the signal of each pickup. If you plug a regular instrument cable into the second output, only the bridge pickup will work.

The 360/12C63 is the George Harrison reissue. George’s 360/12 was the second 12 string guitar Rickenbacker ever made. John’s Rickenbacker, the 325C64 was originally a one-off guitar made for John Lennon. Unlike the production version, John’s had no f-hole or “cat’s eye” hole, and it was one of few 325 guitars to be finished in Jetglo. Rickenbacker had based it off John’s original 1958 Rickenbacker he got in Hamburg that was refinished black, and had been used by John on all recordings and performances up to that point, including the Ed Sullivan show. Paul McCartney’s Rickenbacker, the 4001C64 (which is reissued occasionally) was originally the first left handed Rickenbacker 4001S to be manufactured by Rickenbacker. When The Beatles went to Rickenbacker to receive their guitars, Rickenbacker offered a regular 4001S to Paul but he didn’t take it because it was a right handed bass. He instead waited to get a left handed one that was finished in late 1964 and featured the neck through piece from a regular righty Rickenbacker. Paul’s Rickenbacker almost immediately replaced his Höfner, which was now only being used on few tracks, and would be retired after their last show. Paul used his Rickenbacker til the eighties before he pulled his Höfner out of retirement. John’s Rickenbacker was retired in 1966, being replaced with his Casino. John wouldn’t be seen playing his Rickenbacker publicly again. George used his Rickenbacker on a few tracks for Sgt. Peppers and the white album, before retiring it. George later used his 360/12 with The Traveling Willburys. George’s Rickenbacker now belongs to his son, Dhani Harrison.

Not sure if it was mentioned in any of the 100s of comments, but one thing Trogly got wrong- this historic reissue model of the 63 has two output jacks, but it’s not “stereo” like the Ric-o-Sound version in the more modern models. I wish mine had it but I wanted that Harrison look of the 63. This one has two output jacks but they both output the same signal- not one pickup to each or anything like that.

As you saw, it comes with a six saddle bridge which makes it impossible to intonate accurately. However Rickenbacker makes a twelve saddle bridge that you can order but you have to file the notches for the strings yourself. I don't know why they just don't put the 12-saddle bridge on the guitar to begin with.

John Hall Jr. told me that they used to rub in 40 coats of lacquer on them! I doubt they still do, but your can begin to see why it takes a year to get them. They use to use conversion varnish for the finish. Unfortunately, it wasn't environmentally friendly, so they stopped. The most common models are often in stock at online retailers, but if someone is looking for one of less popular models, it will probably have to be ordered. One of the reason for longer lead times is that they build guitars in production runs and when they're done building them, they don't build any more of that model until the next production run. My 620-6 took a year to arrive.

Quick correction on this. The 360/12C63 model is actually one of the rare Rickenbacker models that, despite having two output jacks, does not feature "Ric-O-Sound" stereo outputs. Instead the two outputs are in a dual mono configuration where both output the identical signal of both pickups together. Additionally, on guitars that do have the "Ric-O-Sound" stereo feature, it is not that one output goes to the neck and the other goes to the bridge, but that one output is TS Mono (all pickups) and the other is TRS stereo with the bridge pickup going to Tip, the Neck (and middle if installed) Pickup to Ring, and Ground to Sleeve.

Beautiful! Brings back so many memories of 50 years ago! (some things DO stand the test of time) BUT, Y'might reconsider taking all the strings off at once. My service manual from my original (now ancient) 1964 360-12 clearly states 'the strings should be pulled and replaced ONE AT A TIME!'. Very time consuming yes, but maintains your warranty as the dual truss rod is an old Harmony design that F.C. Hall picked up when it lapsed its patent and it becomes less stable when tension is constantly worked back and forth changing strings en total, (like bending a wire too many times). Near as I can tell from recent reproduction instruments, the same design is still being used for authenticity sake.

Ric-o-sound works like this (source is my 4003):
Jack closest to the strap pin is the standard mono output.
The one further away is the Ric-o-sound jack where a TRS Y cable (stereo plug to two mono plugs) needs to be used in order to split the pickup (Bridge is on the tip, neck on the ring).
Using a standard TS cable in the Ric-o-sound will only output the bridge pickup since the contact for the neck pickup is grounded to the sleeve.

The fifth knob controls the volume of the neck pickup, mainly so that it can be indendently lowered outside the overall mix. Otherwise, when switching from the lead, bridge pickup to the neck pickup, it would overpower the lead sound. It works extremely well for my 6-string Ric! I have it set and never really need to adjust it.
My Ric does NOT have any fisheyes in the neck paint, so, I assume those are flaws.
My biggest gripe is the pick-guard. I removed mine and replaced the screws with smaller ones to keep from damaging the guitar. Some guys like the pick-guard that way but I found it too high for my hand to rest on after playing all these years and, basically, uncomfortable (I tried it for quite some time that way before removal and just couldn’t adapt to it).

their High Gain Single coil. Keep in mind the 'High Gain' is really a mildly overwound version of the 50's version. In '66 they overwound the regular single coil for Pete Townsend and it soon became the new standard model. The Townsend PU is killer. It is a hand wound, scatterwound PU. ...add to that it is triple chrome plated. I bought mine from Ric about 3 years ago and it was only $75.00 USD. Although it is not a drop in it is a killer sound. Remember Townsend used it for not just a clean sound but ran thru two dimed 100 watt Plexi Stacks. I put it in the neck position of my Fender Duo Sonic with a Duncan 55 Tele at the bridge. I get both early Townsend sounds from the one guitar.

The strings will not stay inside like you showed with the modern tailpiece. They must always be under tension to stay put. I replaced the bridge with one having 12 individual adjustments. You did your research and were accurate about everything minus the Ric-o-sound. The Ric-o-sound is a stereo output and you use a stereo splitter "Y" cable to run one pickup off to one amp and the other off to another. So if you're using the stereo output, it's only coming out of that one jack, not both.
The other thing, the center wood on the neck is also just maple. I think it may be a darker maple or they stain it or something.

When I got mine, I took it to a top guitar tech, who suggested I purchase a 12 saddle bridge from Rickenbacker (Today's price, $US125) , which I did, making intonation easier.
I'm afraid I find the neck too narrow, but my tech suggested a small improvement by installing a new nut, recut for maximum string spacing. I didn't go ahead with that mod.
One of the greatest pleasures I have experienced on mine is gigging "Tamborine Man" loud through a big marshal rig. The 12 string sweet spot really shined through. Enjoy your new guitar. What a great finish it has.

I had a rare ES-335 12-string a long time ago. It played well by was not nearly as nice sounding as a Rick. Humbuckers and 12 strings don't go.

Nice to see a Rick on the show. I had a 370-12 for a while. Changed the strings just once. Took me over 4 hours. I sold it.

the newer 360's have binding on the sound hole, 24 frets, and a R tailpiece. You have the George Harrison model

Nice review of a great guitar! Just a couple of observations:
The outputs are standard (mono), and Rick-O-Sound (stereo). You only use one cable at a time, not two for stereo sound. To access the stereo feature, you need a stereo cable and a splitter box or Y-cable, which is basically what the old Rick-O-Sound box did. For some reason, even though they still offer Rick-O-Sound on their deluxe guitars, they stopped making the box decades ago.
The trapeze tailpiece isn’t necessarily for 12-strings; it’s a vintage piece. Modern Rickenbackers feature an R tailpiece, but those have a reputation for cracking under the stress of 12strings. It happened to my Rickenbacker 330/12, so I replaced the R with a vintage trapeze, which is much stronger than the R.

George actually had two Ric 360-12s-his first one was the double-bound one that Ric gave him in 1964, and later he had the more modern rounded-top version as well.

They're beautiful guitars. I'm a working musician but I can't justify the price of these things. I have a Schecter 12 string electric with humbucking pickups . It's an import, but it works.

Ricks are actually tri stereo. one output is mono and the second is stereo. so you could actually run it through 3 amps at once. that is what i do with my Rick.

Love my 330/12. Gives me that sound I need that no other guitar can give me.
Like having a vintage guitar like my '65 SG. Again a certain sound it has that's all its own.
Unique sounds is what it's all about.

To be fair I don’t think they have any choice as to which tuning pegs are for which strings and the way they “flip” from one side of the headstock to the other. Obviously the slotted tuners are “inboard” on the headstock compared to the standard tuners and if you tried to retain the first of each pair of strings being tuned by the conventional tuners you’d be left with your strings crossing over each other (or more precisely crossing over its paired string) on the higher strings side of the headstock. That would be a really bad idea.

@@rodrossi9749 One? Yes, it's the coolest of guitars and the best-sounding electric 12, hands down. I have an old one and I love it. When I purchased it, the neck was curved beyond repair. I changed it for an identical one that is much wider at the nut that I had made by a very talented local lutier. I also had a single truss rod installed in the new neck and bought a 12 saddle bridge for it that just popped right onto the studs. It just may be the best Rick 360/12 of all.

In college the lead guitar player in my band had a Rickenbaker 6/12. It was usually a 12 string but there was a lever that you could pouch that pulled 6 of the strings out of the way so it would play like a 6 string.

    • @Jeffcatbuckeye
      @Jeffcatbuckeye 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Probably a 366/12. It had a “comb” that grabbed the octave strings and pulled them taught against the main strings.

The stereo output is a splitter used with a stereo cable and a splitter box for separate amps or channels for each pickup.

The dark red in the sound hole is normal. And THANK YOU for correctly describing the fifth knob function at 6:45. I personally prefer the modern 12 Rick where the slots in the headstock go all the way through. I often string the treble side courses in reverse so that they are the same as the bass side.
