    This was good. Pain and Glory even better. Almodovar living legend.

    Love how expressive Mark is...he reviews films almost like a conductor guiding the orchestra through a complex but beautiful piece of music. 👏

    I really love it when I hear a critic talk intelligently about a film, it's a sad rarity these days. Should try and check this one out.

    I saw mostly slightly cool three star reviews of this film. I saw it last weak and absolutly loved it for rhe exact same reasons as Mark. Glad to find I'm not alone.

      Yes, it's bizarre, particularly when films of little merit were given the same rating. This is far from being an incidental work. I predict that in the future this will be looked upon as one of Almodovar's masterpieces.

    I'm really looking forward to watching this now! Almodovar was one of the first international directors I decided to explore when I was beginning to really get into film! Volver is amazing, I really like Broken Embraces as well, and think The Skin I Live In is a modern masterpiece (which now with social development on how transgender people are viewed and supported by society adds a deeper layer to the subtext)! I can't wait to see this in the cinema!

    I saw it. liked it. listened to you. And I'm in tears right now. What did you say to make me feel like this? I loved it. I love PA's cinema. One director that I can trust every time.

    An Almodovar film with great performances, I'm definitely in!
    In this clip, Mark was as excited as he last spoke about Carol, I trust Julieta is a must see...

      Funnily enough Pedro voted for Carol for Best Picture last year I was reading and said it was his favourite English language film of 2015

      CherryEM I love Carol, it's my favorite film in 2015, BTW I watched an old film called In The Mood For Love the other day which reminded me of Carol, both are extremely beautiful like pieces of arts.

      +PauLtus B both are romance dramas with impeccable performances, beautiful costumes, wonderful soundtracks, and most importantly both are really well directed.
      If you liked In The Mood For Love, then don't miss CAROL.

      In the mood for love was in a weird way on of the most believable romances I've seen in a movie and directed in a way which made it a bit dreamlike at the same time.

    It's a fascinating and beautiful film, though by no means perfect: certainly, the plot is full of contrivances (though it seems self-conscious in this regard, with its references to Highsmith and Hitchcock). I'm not sure I'd put it up there with his best work, but it's definitely worth a cinema trip.
    I liked the ending: it seemed appropriate, given how concerned 'Julieta' is with how little we can know about other people, and how we can love them and be loved by them in any case.

    Just saw the movie today in San Diego at an art house theatre. Loved it on every level!! Why is it so tough for U.S. film makers to produce such a quality movie as "Julieta"? This is the best movie I have seen all year, and I am an avid movie-goer. Pedro, keep up the excellent directing!

    I saw this film a couple of days ago, and I can’t stop thinking about it - it’s mesmerising. I didn’t like Volver (apart from Estrella Morente’s singing), but this is incredible.

    To be quite honest, I didn't enjoy Julieta that much. In my opinion, the film wasn't very tight. It had a lot of stories to tell (as evidenced by the three short stories that served as source material) and I didn't feel they integrated at all well. What killed it for me was that even emotionally, it didn't touch me, and I'm usually a huge sucker for this type of movie. Aesthetically it was very pleasing, however by the end I got the feeling that Almodovar was simply using his characteristically colour-intensive dramaturgy as a way to cite himself from his earlier work, and that's when the movie became completely empty to me.
    There was one moment however I felt was very clever, brilliant almost, and it was the switch between the two lead actresses you referred to in your podcast. For that one moment and the almost sinfully engaging colour palette I forgave the movie the twenty bucks I spent on tickets for me and my friend, even though to me, these strengths couldn't quite carry the movie on their own.

      "What killed it for me was that even emotionally it didn't touch me"??? really? ive watched hundreds of films and felt nothing, this 1 i connected to both the main leads, u shud watch it again tbh

    I admired almodovar's craft as I nearly always do, but some of my favorite things about his films are the fun, outrageousness, humor, provocation, and metacommentary that tend to match his bold style. This film has the style but none of those qualities, which for me made it a little disappointing though still fairly enjoyable. It's interesting to hear that he intended it to be his first serious and straight-forward drama. I just hope he's not pandering to critics' calls for "stylistic restraint.

    I agree with everything Mark says, I was however a little bit disappointed with the ending as I was expecting more and I didn't get closure as a viewer, this I feel could affect the ratings of this film to some viewers if they're not a fan of Almodovar.

    • @PauLtus_B

      Is the ending unsatisfying or is there just a lack of an actual ending.

    • @bluesjazznotes9436
      @bluesjazznotes9436 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is both Paul, a lack of of an actual ending which ultimately leads to an unsatisfying ending, if it wasn't for the finesse of this production from direction to performances, the story is a bit hollow in my opinion, but it manages to capture so brilliantly the despair and the struggle that Julietta was going through just like the Babadook did.

      I think to many movies settle for an ending that should be satisfying rather than one that would be good.
      An actual lack of ending seems problematic.

    • @bluesjazznotes9436
      @bluesjazznotes9436 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree completely Paul. Mark is very satisfied with the film, so I think you should give it a shot and decide for yourself, I usually try to watch the movie first before the review so I don't get influenced by an opinion, the reviews that I watch first are for movies that I'm not sure about such as Bad Moms for example and since Mark liked it, I'll give it a shot if there's nothing else.

      Well I sort of use reviews as a basis on whether I want to see something since I generally don't come across something I trust will be good beforehand.

    The first third of the film didn't really gel with me, but from then on - I sort of got. Yeah, the sense of looking back - and on one's life, and in particular the ending was very moving.

    I really don't get it. This was laughably pretentious and predictable at the same time. Cliché upon cliché, terrible dialogue and human behaviour that simply makes no sense e.g. fisherman lover drowns, is cremated, his wife and (secret) lover scatter his ashes in the sea - and then wife calls daughter, who's having fun away at summer camp, to tell her the sad news. WTF?? But hey - what do I know?
