Extreme Prejudice Is The Best 80s Action Movie You Never Saw

- Extreme Prejudice is an 80s action classic that not a ton of people have seen. I don’t think modern audiences realize what a big star, Nick Nolte was in his prime. The older, more grizzled guy we know now isn’t who he was when he first started making movies in the 70s. He first burs onto the scene with an acclaimed mini-series (one of the first of its kind) called Rich Man, Poor Man, and had a smash hit with The Deep, which is mostly remembered now for Jacqueline Bisset’s wet t-shirt scenes. Other movies like North Dallas Forty proved he was more than just a blond-pretty boy, which is how he was considered back then, and 48 hrs brought him to another level. But, Nolte always had a taste for more cerebral fare, and when he went commercial, his movies tended to flop, as he only really caught on to the zeitgeist again during his middle-aged period in the 90s, with Cape Fear and The Prince of Tides. One such attempt to mould him into a bigger star was this movie, which re-teamed him with his 48 Hours director, Walter Hill. It’s been called Hill’s homage to his mentor Sam Peckinpah, and sure enough, it does feel like a kinda-sorta remake of THE WILD BUNCH. It's this week's Best Movie You Never Saw and a movie I hope folks check out!

Dammit this film needs recognition, it's one of the most violent badass films of the eighties.
And the cast is incredible, a slimmed down Nick Nolte, Micheal freaking Ironside, Clancey Brown, Powers Boothe and William Forsythe. It's one of Walter Hill's best, with a bloodbath of an ending. It's fantastic!
Nolte looked great in it. A rare look at what he might have been like as an action hero.
@@JoBloOriginals He lost 50lbs for the role, and he looked in superb shape, especially if you compare how he looks in 48 Hours. But slim or not, he's an underrated action star that should have done more action films.
Agreed. I recorded it on VHS when it first hit cable TV, and picked up a DVD when the first prints went out. Great flick. One of my all time favorites.
But can it beat Lone Wolf McQuade lol?
@@Lafly84 Hell Yes... it beats out McQuade ! That was more Chuck Norris campy 80's crap. ( I enjoyed it though) E.P. had a stronger cast, better plot, more realistic. No contest !
I saw this on tape in the 80s, i was 6. I was hooked since. I bought this on dvd and downloaded it. I never hear anyone talking about extreme prejudice. ❤❤❤❤❤
Saw it in the 80's as well... only that I was 26 ;).
Since Nolte was as great as sliced bread back than, I guess I've seen most of his flics.
Not in THIS context anyway XD
I always thought it was Burt Reynolds on the black/white poster & not Nick. Saw this film in the 80’s & definitely underrated.
Same! I was captivated and a bit shell-shocked by the end of it all. I remember just feeling exhausted and burnt, but I never forgot the movie, despite having not seen it since that first rental. Gotta track down the Blu now.
Saw this Masterpiece in the theater when it first came out. Ever since then it has become my top ten favorite.
I liked around 40% of the film but Hill takes the plot, scenes into a bizarre twisted version. Trying to evolve 3-4 plots into 1 loud chaotic end 💥💥💥.
One of my favorites!!! Powers Boothe’s Cash Bsiley is my favorite villain ever. Thanks for alerting more people to this under appreciated gem.
I saw this on HBO back in the 80’s. LOVED it. It was like a Chuck Norris film without Norris
It definitely is one of the best. I saw it twice, at least, in the VHS rental days and will happen see it again.
Clancy Brown, Michael Ironside, Nick Nolte, and William Forsyth. One movie. Gotta check it out
"Extreme Prejudice" is a wild action thriller! I had never heard of it before I saw it, and it quickly became one of my favorites!
I remember going over to a friend's house for movie night. My friends wife sometimes worked overnight shifts as she was a nurse. One of the other guests had brought this movie. We watched this movie several times. Great action movie.
This movie was on constant rotation for me in the '90s. It is a shame that it is never received a true high definition version and getting good copies of it is extremely hard. I think I waited 10 years for a non-standard definition to be available on Google. Thanks for introducing this to new audiences and taking me down memory lane with it. I think I'm going to go watch it now!
But it's available in 4k. I even own a copy
@@pheunithpsychic-watertype9881 it is now but I'm pretty sure that's only been available for the last couple years. Like the video said, it was only available in a crummy pain and scan for about the last 30 years. I haven't got my 4K copy yet, are there any good bonuses on the Blu-ray?
Extreme Prejudice is one of the best films of the 80s, regardless of the genre.
I literally ordered the Blu-ray straight after watching this video. I completely forgot about Extreme Prejudice, I only saw it once on television back in the late 90’s. Can’t wait to delve into it again, thank once again JoBlo fire reminding me about action movies like this 👍🙂
Grew up watching Nick. Great actor.
He's one of those actors that make it look easy
One of Goldsmith's lesser known scores too. Really helps give this film another action level.
Goldsmith rocks! My favorite is Breakheart Pass and Planet of the Apes
Easily one of my favorite movies of all time.
I saw this years ago. It was an awesome film. I'd love to see this again.
Never saw it? I own it and watch it all the time. Awesome awesome movie
The part with Tiny Lister was funny. 🎬
I love this film! It has one of the best climatic shootouts ever captured on film. The recent bluray release looks and sounds great.
the most awesome cast
Nick Nolte was also amazing in The thin red line, one of the best military performances ever
my favorite! I saw it at the theater when it was first released a
long time ago.
Must have seen this classic 100 times! Nice slept in flick!
❤🖤❤🖤❤🤘
This film kicked ass.
One of my ten favorite flicks. I watch this one at least once a month. This cast is superlative. Forsythe steals the entire movie with his skeevy but likable mercenary, channeling some serious Warren Oates type vibes.
This had the best of the best of the "hard" men
Nolte,
Booth,
Ironside,
Brown,
Forsythe,
Scott,
Mulhern
Tullis
Torn
Lister
I wouldn't call the gay guy from Revenge of the Nerds a hard man 🤣
@@Craig-wi5bv I see what you did there, i.o . 🤣😆🤣😂
Although I first saw him in the comedy "48 Hours", I always thought of Nick Nolte as a serious actor because of his role in the movie "Under Fire" with Gene Hackman. Also loved him in "Three Fugitives". I loved "Extreme Prejudice" after seeing it because it was basically a western in the modern setting. Here you have an old school gunslinging Texas Ranger and a team of highly trained ex-special forces mercenaries.
Still a favorite after all these years.
But lets not forget "Farewell to the King", another Nolte masterpiece.
I jumped all over this when it came out on Blu-ray and I own almost all of Mr Hill’s films a very underrated director 😎
A perfectly casted, razorsharp action flick wonderfully crafted by Walter Hill and perfectly orchestrated by Jerry Goldsmith!
Just to add John Milius was one of the writers for this film. I was 17 when this movie came out and I grew up in Texas. So 1 riot 1 Ranger...
Than Powers Booth, Clancy Brown, Michael Ironside, Rip Torn, Maria Alonso it was a great entertaining movie!
Saw it in theaters while I was you and in the USAF in New Mexico. Loved it then, Love it now!
Walter Hills great quote about storytelling was "character must be ruthlessly rooted in action". Take the opposite of that, the great gatsby...he was in a machine gun platoon in WWI at the Argonne, he was a bigtime bootlegger, as a kid he was the 1st mate for an old guy who'd struck it rich in the Klondike......all "offscreen". Hill said don't tell people, show them. The less talk and more action you know more about the character. Having spent time down in the Big Bend and being a fan of .45 autos....I loved Nolte's gun rig. In South Texas to the border this is referred to as a "Pachanga" gun. A dressy rig for a special ranching type BBQ, Tequila, & target Shooting contests.
Thank you, chris. I bought this on blu ray on your recommendation, and I was not disappointed. Then on went on a Walter Hill kick. I watched streets of fire 48 hour southern comfort and red heat so thank you. A movie you should recommend is Nicolas cages red rock west a great neo western.
This was 80's action film mmaking at its best. The characters and situations were complex and compelling. The final shootout at the end was abolutley inspired by the Wild Bunch, which was one of the best westerns ever made in my opinion.
Good video!! Really did NOT think anyone knew this movie even existed!! Saw it when it first came to the theaters and have a copy on DVD when it first came to DVD. Glad it is finally getting the love it deserves.
This was an amazing movie. Top notch action film.
I watched this back in the day it was a classic as was the long riders!! and the warriors go Walter Hill !!
Nick Nolte based his character after a real Texas Ranger he followed around to prepare for the role. This was one of his best roles after 48 Hours.
One Ranger, 🤠 in real life the Texas Ranger sued Nick Nolte over a debt-plan 💰💰💰. Nolte wears a 1911a1 .45acp Cdr model because of the Ranger.
One of my favorites from the era.
I used to go to the movies every Tuesday because the theater had cheap movies and happened to pick this one without knowing anything other than Nick Nolte was in it such a great movie!
One of the best action movies of the 80's and Nick Nolte on his best. Super cool movie 🎬🎥 Greetings from the Netherlands
Thanks for this synopsis. I always liked this film but I can't remember the last time I saw it aired anywhere. There was another Nolte movie that's underrated but I loved: Q&A. His turn as a corrupt, brutal, murdering NYPD detective could give Denzel's Alonso of "Training Day" a run for the most dirty movie detective. As for Walter Hill, a movie I always loved but gets a "meh" treatment: Last Man Standing starring the deadpan-portraying lone hired gunman by Bruce Willis.
I love how the ending shootout goes full Wild Bunch.
One of my favorite movies
Big fan of action films and Walter Hill, but have only seen this once. I remember liking it a lot but kinda forgot about it. Time to add it to the collection!
Agreed. Love the horns of Breakheart Pass
Saw it in the theater when it opened.
Good Walter Hill flick.
Great cast.
Extreme Prejudice is a movie I've loved since seeing it in theaters when it came out. It was what sold me on Rapid Fire, being that the evil dude Cash played a flawed good guy in the Brandon Lee vehicle.
He's in Red Dawn 1984 too 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I can see three great films from this…lone wolf mcquade, predator (the gang of army brother) and expendibles with stallones great bunch of actors. Also forsythes crazy mustve bled over to out for justice! I agree, this was a great movie as a kid growing up in 80s. It would be nice if it could be remastered with all the removed parts for rating and rereleased. Love it! Thx for video!
I saw it. It’s an 80s masterpiece. Good story and better actors than most.
You had me at Maria Conchita Alonzo...
Could you imagine Barbara Carerra & Maria Chicata Alfonso in the Texas 🏜 ? 🔥🔥🔥
Just watched the deep a few days ago with Nolte! What a fun movie that is
Saw this in the theater...so good
Very few people can pull off a Texas Ranger like Nick Nolte. Cool AF!
I love this movie. It must have been one of the first tapes I ever rented and years later I bought it on DVD. I watch it several times a year and it never gets old.🤩
I own this one and liked it very much. The cast alone is insane!!!
Massively under appreciated movie. 🍿
This film was ahead of it's time. Ex military contract operatives working for a 3 letter US agency. I had the VSR way back when. I thought that all of the actors did a great job as well as everyone else. I will purchase the DVD or Blue Ray or the brain implant due out soon. Great movie.
One of the best movies ever, fantastic action and cast.
This was one Damn good serious action movie during the 80's that got unnoticed, Loved it. Junior from London 😎🇬🇧🇬🇧🇯🇲🇯🇲
The movie was trying to be A Peckinpah Wild Bunch scene at the end. I love how Powers Boothe's character has a beard in some scenes in the townee at the end and it disappears in other scenes.
Rip Torn was great as the old county sheriff. "Hellfire Jack, the only thing worse than a politician is a child molester!"
I saw this movie when it was released in the theaters like every other 80s movie back then. I was in my 20s and couldn't believe how great the movies were then. They have only gotten better and better since then. I absolutely love the Walter Hill movies.
Thanks for covering this. Although I have been a Walter Hill fan for over 40 years, somehow, I missed this one until the recent Blu-ray release. And while it is not in my top three of Walter Hill movies, or maybe even top five, I really did enjoy it, and you can see the tribute to Peckinpah all over the place. Definitely a must-see for any Walter Hill fan.
One of my favorite cult classics. "I'm real particular with who I drink with."
Cast is ABSOLUTELY stacked too.
Nolte character is based of Joaquin Jackson Texas Ranger who wrote the book one Ranger. Jackson got Notlte ready for the part.
Enjoy this channel. Enjoy the reviews. As with life nothing is always agreed on. Powers Boothe has left his mark as an actor IMO. I'm rewatching this after this review. Keep up the good work.
I could never find a dvd copy of this awesome modern western. It's the only movie I've ever willingly bought on streaming from Prime. Every character was badass and had so many layers.
Read pretty good reviews on its release but there was nowhere to see this in 80s Edinburgh that I could find. Forgot about it until now. Seems i missed a superb Walter Hill actioner. Thanks for review.
Thanks Chris for bringing attention to this classic. As a child of the late 70s and 80s they were plenty of action movies and I eventually saw this on HBO a year after its release. I really enjoyed and thought it was more rich and offered more than the average 80s flick, plus Nick Nolte was cool af in this film and it oozes Peckinpah. I hope people take notice on this one.
What a amazing movie i see it when i was 9 or 10 its so underrated
i loved this movie..i use to call walter hill movies.(walter hill shootem ups....) love all his movies....
Real - life Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson (1935 - 2016) was a consultant for this movie and Nick Nolte based his outfit entirely on what Ranger Jackson wore for work. Joaquin was among the last of the Old Breed of Texas Ranger and had many great stories to tell in the books he wrote.
Ummm did you read it? Jackson sues Nolte $$$ sooo I would not get too 🥰. Also Jackson's son shoots-kills a friend Rust set style with Jackson's loaded S&W model 29 4". 😦
Extreme Prejudice is an amazing film that is a must-see for fans of hardcore thrillers. It feels like a Peckinpah film; the similarities between it and The Wild Bunch are numerous. Nolte's character is based on a real-life Texas Ranger and he fit the role well. He could have had more action roles. Boothe and the rest of the cast are great too. And Walter Hill deserves more recognition.
I'm here for the Lee Ving cameo
Also...Walter Hill started off with Hard Times. One of the best movies ever
Masterpiece...
I am so glad you did this movie I love extreme prejudice and I'm glad to find out it's on Blu-Ray now
Seeing it in the theater I thought it was as if The Wild Bunch and Lone wolf Mcquade got together and made a baby.
I tracked that movie down after reading one Ranger by Joaquin Jackson he mentioned that he work with nolte for the film so I had to watch it but it was out of print but I found it and enjoyed it
I read One Ranger 🤠 too. The book seems hacky & tacked together at points. 1 of the "I'm so great" 🤩 story. Jackson sued Nick Nolte over a $$$ deal-offer. Nolte totes a 1911a1 Cdr type .45 because of Jackson. In the 1960s 1970s 1980s many rough Rangers packed SAO 1911a1 models.
Extreme Prejudice is the Best 80s Action Movie I did see...had the VHS and the movie poster.
… weird how no one talks about this classic movie.
Jerry Goldsmith's complete score is available from the Intrada soundtrack label.
Proof that Nolte always "held his own" from the 80's until now - check Angel Has Fallen if you don't believe me - despite the violence, it's an entertaining feature and has a lot of surprises.
Powers Boothe truly excels as main villain, whereas Michael Ironside is lethal as secondary antagonist (who won't hesitate to kill if he has to, repeated in Total Recall 3 years later) easy to see why Hill was one of the "go to" directors at the time.
Filmed in El Paso, my quasi hometown!
A good mix with 1983's 🤠 Lonewolf MacQuade. Both in El Paso Texas.
I havent seen this movie in years...this shit was a good shoot em up. Nic Nolte and that hat really shined in this movie.
It’s been very interesting the revived interest I’ve seen online for '80s and '90s Action Movies and their Directors, maybe because those type of films are going extinct in the mainstream and being replaced by newer action movies that aren’t as intense as these old school stuff?
Oh no, I saw it. Big Screen Baby. I mean Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Michael Ironside, and in early roles in their career Clancy Brown, William Forsythe. I had forgotten that it was directed by Walter Hill. Warriors, come out to plaaaay. Wow I just checked IMDB,and didn't know John Miilus was a co-writer. No wonder this movie was so badass.
This was an excellent action movie have no idea why it gets no play anymore
Saw it, decades ago.
There’s also another movie called Extreme Prejudice with Thomas Ian Griffith .
When it came to reviving the western, guys like Walter hill, John Carpenter, Peter hyams, and now Taylor Sheridan knew what the audience wanted and still does to this day.
Ok - you had me confused for a bit - when you were talking about the CIA handler played by Andrew Robinson (Scorpio in Dirty Harry) you were showing the actor John Dennis Johnston who plays the character of Merv.
John Dennis Johnston has 100+ credits to his name, but I first saw him as the vile Nick Moats in St Elsewhere and I still remember his character after nearly 40 years.
I was in my twenties when this came out. Not many movies out there at that time, so this one was one we went to over and over again. Like Alien when it came out. The good ones you would watch two or three times in a row if you could. A flop at the box office that critics did not like. Yeah, shows what they know. They hated Highlander.
In the thumbnail he kind of looks like Ryan Reynolds to me lol
I’ll be damned, he does look like RR 🤣
😊 Q and A is great too
This movie is so good. If you haven't seen it yet then watch it ASAP.
I saw it! Loved it! Certainly an ode to Peckinpah…
Actually, I see it. Numerous times. My favorite scene is when Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown eliminate two bad guys in the desert.
But I did see it and I love Nick Nolte.
Never. I have watched this movie a hundred times.
Walter hill i love his movies
