      The pricing starts at 1,300 usd since Apple had set the base price of its MBA around that price. However, we r getting double the storage and ram, and if you add a little bit more you could get the version with a cellular modem.
      It's a matter of availability. If more OEM got into the arm laptop market, competition could lead to lower priced laptop since thinkpad is usually reserves for the high-end/business market.

Many sales guys seem to prefer Thinkpads and many times they flip to that tablet mode when they browse inventories and such, so odd hinge choice. Another one is how come there is not a single USB-A port for backwards compatibility? But if I'd be such salesman. I'd definitely be interested in this. Battery life just seems awesome and I'm quite surprised about state of "emulation". Not bad at all, considering how new these Windows ARM machines are.

    Sigh. Nobody seems to bother testing 4k video streaming (unless a machine actually has a 4k built-in display), but I reckon it is pretty important for a LOT of people. I'm biased, after I bought a new computer naively assuming "anything new today surely can play back 4k video easily", only to find out it is completely unwatchable on the micro PC (Asus PN41 with Celeron 5100 N clocked at just 1.1 GHz for a 6W thermal envelope...) I unfortunately bought.
    Decoding the video streams takes a fair bit of CPU, so although the onboard graphics can run mulitple 4k displays at once, it is not always the case that you can plug in a TV and watch 4k Netflix, TH-cam and so on... and it doesn't seem like anybody tests this in computer reviews. A very strange omission in my opinion.

    Nice review. Thinking buying it. Thanks.
    Cortex X1 in this laptop is a beast ... IPC (performance per GHz) better than AMD Zen 3 while lower than Alder Lake (Golden Cove core).
    Cortex X1 has 6-wide integer scalar core (4x ALU + 2x Branch Units) capable execute 6 micro-ops per cycle. This is wider than Zen 3 or ADL (both are 5-wide).
    Apple M1/M2 is 8-wide Godzilla (6xALU + 2x Branch Units) and has +40% IPC above ADL. Apple is at different level, 3 gens ahead or 10 years of development.
    x86 has 5 GHz speed benefit while those ARMs run at 3 GHz so no wonder Intel still wins even they are behind in terms of development (low IPC) ... but of course it costs a lot of energy and you need big battery to deliver high current. That's why no x86 is in phone or tablet.
    Since this year ARM upgraded mobile un-core so it's possible 4x Cortex X3 cores + 8x Cortex A715 cores (4x big + 8x middle).
    - Cortex X3 has about +30% higher IPC than X1 .... 8-wide as Apple M1 with IPC of Apple A12 Vortex core, about +10% IPC above ADL
    - Cortex A715 has IPC about Cortex X1 .... so 8 of these middle cores with IPC of Zen 3 instead 4x small cores A55 will be HUGE boost for MT performance.
    - Cortex X3 will have 1600 pts in GeekBench 5 ST at 3.6 GHz .... pretty awesome at those few Watts.
    I will make a decision when new Qualcomm based on Nuvia Phoenix will be out (early 2023). Phoenix should be Apple M3 level.
    --------------------------------------
    Looks like x86 will die inevitably in couple of years. On 3nm TSMC these ARMs (future Cortex X4/X5) will run at 4 GHz so it will attack >2000 GB5 pts while running at 15 W TDP. This is why x86 will die soon. Apple has 8 decoders, Cortex X3 has 6 decoders (both has 64-bit support only, no 32-bit ARMv7 anymore), so very easy 4-byte fixed length RISC -> uOps (RISC) decoding. While x86 has variable instruction length encoding (1 byte up to 15 bytes) where 6th instruction could be anywhere between 6th byte and 90th byte (so 84 possibilities only for 6th instruction)... this is an exponential explosion causing huge x86 power consumption due to old obsolete x86 ISA. Intel found workarounds for ADL however it costs transistors, energy and money to develop. This wasting is not sustainable when they have to face to modern and very smart designed ISA as ARMv8/9.

    • @mozzinator

      @@mozzinator 1}Qualcomm may outperform Apple next year .... they bought start up Nuvia with chief architect of Apple A11/ M1 series. At least they will fight with each other who is the best.
      2} Mediatek and Nvidia - Rest of the pack is using license ARM cores like Cortex / Neoverse. Last Cortex X3 has IPC similar to Apple A12 however it lacks 20% IPC to the last Apple A15/M2. Although X3 has 20% IPC advantage over Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000 series) and Alder Lake (Core 12000 series).
      3) x86 like Intel and AMD are basically done. x86 instruction set is old and cannot be modified to be energy efficient. In two years ARM will take majority in laptops and servers. End of 2021 there were 10% servers based on 64-bit ARMv8 (64-core Amazon Graviton2 and 128-core Ampere Altra Max).
      IMHO Apple and Qualcomm (in MS laptops) will stay in premium range so the biggest market influence will have cheap mass production of license Cortex (good enough and better and cheaper than x86) machines. Also next-gen gaming consoles (Xbx and PS) will probably migrate to ARM.

    • @kazioo2
      @kazioo2 ปีที่แล้ว

      x86 isn't dying any time soon as its scalability from mid range to highest performance with modularity is an incredible feature for the task flexibility that ARM doesn't have. As Jim Keller said, the actual differences between the architectures are now quite small and everyone is pushing physics really hard. You are ignoring the part where Apple's wide design is only brilliant if you don't scale the frequency up too far from 3 GHz. They are pretty much stuck at it. So x86 will continue to wear the crown of absolute max perf. And Apple will need to innovate in other ways than pushing frequencies, however everyone in this industry is hitting the wall of ST IPC and majority of low hanging fruits are already taken (some of those are the easiest cheat: dedicated ASICs for specific functions). Moor's law is on its last fumes since the Dennard scaling died.

    • @arm-power
      @arm-power ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kazioo2 1) Which x86 instructions are responsible for scalability, please?
      2) Do you realize the difference between instruction set (called ISA, like x86) and micro-architecture (HW implementation of that ISA)? You should know that server scalability is property of HW implementation. Good example is Fujitsu's super-computers based on SPARC. The latest Fujitsu is based on ARMv8 ISA with SVE vectors/matrix SIMD and pure CPU machine is beating all other super-computers based on Nvidia GPUs and x86 CPUs.
      3) You should know that every x86 CPU runs inside as RISC machine. First AMD K5 CPU was modified RISC CPU called AMD 29000. Since than we have only internally-RISC x86 CPU.
      4) That extra translation from old garbage CISC to modern RISC is what makes x86 inefficient and bloated (technically it's HW emulation). Future is RISC, it's always been (all historical 8-bit CPU were CISC like MOS6502, M6800, M68K, Z80, VAX and they evolved into powerful 64-bit RISCs like Alpha, HP PA-RISC, SPARC. There is no new CISC ISA, every new ISA is RISC like AArch64, RISC-V, Xtensa etc.). Intel and AMD CPUs are 80% RISC already. Just needed to throw the old garbage called x86 away.
      x86 is dead, because CISC is dead 20 years.

    im not a fan of this, ryzen 6000 has really good battery life if you place the same limitations like office apps, email, and web browsing (10 hrs SOT). while still being x86 and no compatibility issues. windows on arm is not even close to being ready. apple was able to convince software vendors to make arm optimized versions because they said they would be switching to arm for all mac products moving forward. meaning that if they wanted their apps to be on macos they had to optimise for arm since rossetta2 was a temporary solution in the transition. Since more than 95% of laptops running windows will continue to ship with x86 in the future, there is no incentive for Software vendors to optimize for windows on arm. So unless Microsoft starts paying fat stacks of cash to get companies on board, windows on arm will not pick up steam. In addition, if you care about battery life and you absolutely need windows because of some windows specific program, this wouldnt work either because it may not run that program natively and will need to be emulated which may lead to unpredictable crashes. you are better off sticking with a modern ryzen laptop or the m1/m2 macbook air, which will probably emulate windows better than this thing runs it natively

    The implementation of the snapdragon 8cx gen3 is still bad despite showing a much better performance figure than 8cx gen2. Performance is close enough to Intel i5 1135G, except in the BrowserBench where the 1135G leads 189 versus 102. Battery life is likely better than the 1135G but part of that is due to it being slower at web browsing. And web browsing can be a significant portion of it's duties considering it might not reliable run many of the heavier software(especially as it will likely throttle even if the heavier software will run). I think Lon is a bit more forgiving for it's faults?

For a start you have to have it on highest performance mode otherwise in many apps and browsing it sucks, slow at loading and gets out of sync with videos. WOA software and hardware is generations behind Apple and why anyone would choose a WOA machine over a Mac is the million dollar question? Of course, no one should, especially as the X13s is more expensive like for like.

Thre is no other computer-tablet like it because SPX is a specialized device for a segmented market. Apple and its users are not smart enough to understand the market is segmented, so keep spending over $ 3,500 buying 3 devices instead of 2, and over $2500 buying 2 devices instead of 1...
