There's something I like about Sheffield. I think it's much better than Manchester and Birmingham. It's just visually more attractive. Lots of greenery and varied architecture. Manchester is going down the skyscraper route whereas Sheffield is more interesting and creative in an architectural sense.
I'm from the South East and I'll be visiting Sheffield soon. Me and the misses love ourselves a city break and Yorkshire is one those counties that we've always driven past but never actually explored. I did a bit of research on Sheffield and with everything nearly back to pre-Covid levels, we can't wait to see what this wonderful and historic city has to offer. Can I just say that I love how relatively flat Sheffield is. A stark contrast to our cities and towns here in the South.

I hope Sheffield don't go down the skyscraper route that Manchester has taken. A few are ok but low-level buildings keep a city looking lighter and more attractive.
Personally, I would like to see a few more high rise tower blocks in the city. Sheffield has a unique and interesting topography, and only a few cities in the UK share such a feature. I feel that Sheffield should make more of its "stage" with some well placed skyscrapers. My only gripe is that the high rise blocks that Sheffield does have (or the ones seen in the local paper as a possible future development) are largely featureless, anonymous rectangular edifices of concrete and glass, and could literally be anywhere. What's needed are some truly iconic and imaginative architectural designs - look at the skylines of Dubai and Qatar etc for some inspiration. I'm not saying it should become "Skyscraper City", but perhaps a couple more that have been well sited and take your breath away upon seeing them.
@@chrisaskin6144 I agree that cities should have at least one identifiable statement piece building. I wouldn't look to Dubai or Qatar for ideas though. Those two places are (in my opinion) soulless and just horrible. London obviously has lots of landmark buildings but after that it starts running dry. Liverpool has the Liver Building, Portsmouth has the Spinnaker Tower but after that we're struggling. Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield are all in desperate need of a building to stand out and become the 'face' of the city. What happened to the Steel man sculpture that was supposed to replace the Tinsley cooling towers? People were donating money to that project but it seems to have died a death. It's why I never donate to things like that.
Great filming (bit fast though). City planners need to hang their heads in shame for such wastage of funds and wiping out the heart of Sheffield. It is unrecognisable to the great city it used to be. Positively ugly in comparison. They've done a better job than the bombs did in the war!
I think Sheffield is much better than it was. Joe Elliott of Def Leppard was very scathing of the Sheffield he grew up in but he says it's changed into a marvellous city. I agree with him.

I think you need to Google the aftermath of WW2 bombings in historic cities to fully understand the absurdity of what you've just said.
