Mudlarking with Nicola White - FIVE VERY OLD FACES FOUND IN THE MUD. WHAT ARE THEY?

  • Join me for a mudlark along the River Thames in London and see some of the objects which I found prior to the UK Lockdown. In this video I come across at least 5 very old faces which have been lost in the Thames mud for a very long time. The oldest has probably been face down in the mud for over 150 years. Can you see which other faces I find during this outing?!
    During this video I mention a couple of websites:-
    One is www.dawnmist.org and it is run by Heather Coleman. It is full of great info all about clay pipes.
    Also I mention Germander Speedwell's site - and Germander has compiled a database featuring her fabulous pipe finds. Germanderspeedwell.org.uk
    Thank you for watching.
    Follow me on twitter and instagram for more finds @tidelineart
    Take care and see you soon.

I have learned a lot too, while I vicariously enjoy trudging through the mud with you, knowing there's sure to be a new clay pipe and treasure just under the next rock or clump of mud. The trims button back is the retaining piece for buttons with matching fabric to the garment. The fabric is held in place with teeth around the perimeter and the back pushed on to hold it in place. The loop to sew the button on is part of the front piece. Think I still have some in my button box dating from 1970/80. Best wishes from North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Hello & THANKS for another interesting video.
    BTW: The first item you found is not a "tiny buckle".
    It's an "adjusting tab" from a hold-up strap of a 1950s or 1960s garter-belt//suspender-belt for "stockings".

    Nice start Nicola bit of music and birds, I love wild birds so I love these shots you do. I can't begin understand why you can't mudlark. Being out in the fresh air, getting some sunlight if you're lucky is very good for one's health, and it's very easy to keep your distance there. About that knife, it looks to be dressed in silver and being a costly knife otherwise, it'd be worth having it back to resell or to scrap the silver. In most of the US if you turn in a thing and the owner isn't found one can claim it after a waiting period. Provided it's a legal item, of course. That knife is money.

    Hi Nicola, greetings from shielded in Portsmouth the “Trims” is one of those buttons that you put fabric over the front and press it into the back that you have there. They are still in manufacture I believe.

    • @delukxy
      @delukxy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alternate answer - They are used as a backing disc on the opposite side of a piece of cloth. The loop on the button goes through a small hole in the garment and then through the disc. You then put a P clip or split pin through the loop to hold it on. Used on overalls that are frequently washed. Buttons are taken off first.

    I have a true story about the ship half penny. When I was 7-8 I went to The Salvation Army Sunday school, every year at September we had to save ship halfpenny,s , could only save them. So when the time came to hand them in in our boxes, the Sunday school teacher said that they were going overseas for the poor, that's why they had to be ship halfpenny,s. You can share this story if you like too. Had a great time with you again, stay safe love from corby. Jules UK.
