I'm about to go to my shop and do this very project. I even have a shop golden retriever like you. You gave me some good info especially with the door. Thanks.
Hey! Awesome. I don't have my shop anymore, but still have the shop golden retriever. I miss being able to head into the shop with her and tinkering around. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Cool idea. I knew that this one was going to be stored on carpet in a living room, but if I ever had something like this in my shop or garage, I would definitely love to have castors on it.
If you don’t use a wood screw, it won’t bite into the wood , my experience is to drill just through metal band, then use 3/4 in. Wood screw. Look great
The customer just reached out the other day and told me how good it looks in their house. It seems like a great addition to anyone’s home bar or whiskey collection.
Thanks for sharing your video. I'm struggling with the normal door hinges as well. Did you carve both the barrel door and the "door hanger" to fit the hinges?
Hey, sorry I don't have a list of materials, but I know I was using 3/4 inch #6 panhead screws. The the sealants that I show in the video. All of the brackets were ones that I found at home depot. Have fun with your build!
Great build, thank you for the video. One question for you, if you don’t have an extra barrel top, how can you measure inside the barrel for the shelf? I’m pretty new to this and I didn’t fare well in high school geometry. Thanks again!
figure out the diameter of the inside of the barrel. Then you can trace the bottom of the barrel and adjust the tracing bigger or smaller for the diameter of the inside of the barrel. I bet by tracing the bottom of the barrel, you would be almost perfect for a shelf.
Looks great. What finish polyacrylic did you use? I'm thinking of putting satin on mine to give it a little shine. Thanks for showing how you used the jigsaw. I've thought of use the grinder to cut horizontal, but worried it would be a bit too sloppy.
Here are the hinges I used: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-in-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze-Square-Corner-Door-Hinge-20774/205338339 I did remove a sliver of wood from both the barrel and the door where the hinges go. You can barely see it at 19:15. Thank so much for watching!
I'm working on a similar project and have just stained my barrel. I wanted to leave a lot of the markings and discoloring to give it character so I didn't sand it smooth at all, so it has parts that are still pretty rough. Do you think the polycrylic won't looks as good in those areas after a few coats? Thanks and very nice work.
There is probably a good sealant that could preserve the char and keep it from making a mess. I am not super familiar with anything, but I have heard that you can use Shellac. A google search of using shellac to seal up charred wood may help you find what is the right product. Thanks for watching!
I’m trying to hinge the door. I’m curious how you get yours? I understand what kind of hinges you’ve used, I have the hinges on the barrel, but I’m not sure how to get the door lined up properly to attach it to the hinge.. any tips?? from anyone out there?..
Hey Clint, thanks for watching the video. Tips for attaching the hinges: It needs to be attached on (or at least close to) the widest part of the barrel. In the video, you can see that both of my hinges are attached in between the 2 center barrel straps. If you put the hinges higher up or down on the barrel, you will find that the widest part of the barrel ends up not allowing the door to open and close correctly. Get those hinges as close to the widest part of the barrel as possible. Next, if you use multiple hinges, you will want to make sure your hinges are lined up in a straight line. The hinge pins should line up perfectly. If they are a little bit crooked or not in a perfectly straight line, it will affect your door negatively. It probably wont open or close. On that note, make sure your hinges are mounted perfectly plumb or perfectly vertical. it wont line up straight with the curve of the barrel, but that is ok. It is more important that the hinge is plumb, otherwise your door will open slightly up or down instead of straight out. To get the door lined up properly, I would put your door on the barrel as if the door was shut, then slide your hinges in on the hinge side of the door and mark where you want them. Make sure those hinges are plumb, on the widest part of the barrel, and make sure they line up perfectly with each other. With that you should be able to get a well functioning door. Hopefully that helps. It is a little hard to convey with text. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hello and thanks for the video! I'm about to attempt making one of these. Did you put the poly on the metal bands? If not, did you put anything on them to prevent rust from returning? Thanks in advance!
Great video. Did you apply any sealant or stain to the inside of the barrel walls after removing all the char? In the process od building a cabinet and was curious about sealing the walls. Thanks in advance
Thanks for the reply. And great idea with the hinges. Is there any sagging of the door when you open it? I tried strap hinges and there is quite a bit of sagging, even with 2 hinges.
@@jamesgomez8111 I tried strap hinges but ran into the same problem you are having, which is why i ultimately went with the door hinges. The door hinges work perfect, without any sagging. Thanks for watching!
Great build & video! I liked how you used the jig saw to cut out the door. I’ve used a circular saw before but that gets a lil squirrelly sometimes. Will try this tip on my next build. Also, where did you find the latch for the door?
The shelf is actually just a lid from another barrel. I’m not sure the exact dimensions, besides that it is the exact same size as the top of the barrel. Thanks for watching!

@@FunkeAdventures my barrel came out great. Lots of envious fans. Hope you get your shop back and give your Golden a biscuit for me.
Someday! I'm happy to hear the barrel came out nice. @@laff000
Thanks for showing the messy step of char removal. 1st Barrel build that I've seen someone show it. Nice Job!
EXTREMELY messy. haha. I looked like I'd been working in a coal mine by the end.
Nice job. I scrape off the large pieces of char and then put a coat of water based polyurethane inside. That helps a lot
Thanks for watching and for the tip!
Great build 👏
Maybe put wheel locking castors on the base?
Cool idea. I knew that this one was going to be stored on carpet in a living room, but if I ever had something like this in my shop or garage, I would definitely love to have castors on it.
Great looking Cabinet!
Thanks man!
Love this build! So clean.
It was a fun project!

Great suggestion!
I used self tapping screws. No issues with them biting.
Good job, I plan on getting a barrel and doing this.

Where would I find your list of materials needed for your barrel build? I have two barrels and really look forward to starting this build. Thanks

Looks awesome! What size pan head screws did you use?
Hey, sorry for such a delayed response. I believe they were 3/4 inch #6, that way they didn't go all the way through to the inside of the barrel.

I just used a tape measure once I had the door cut. Then made a cardboard template to check for fit before cutting a the boards.
Very nice ❤️
Surprised you didn't add some lighting. Looks awesome regardless
Cheers
When I get the rust off of my straps I use a poly stripping disk for my angle grinder. Hella quick
Oh yeah, that would definitely do the trick.

Home Depot in the aisle with all of the gate hinges.

How did you go about making sure the screws were evenly spaced as well as going through each stave? That is the only issue I am running into right now
I think I actually just aimed for the middle of each stave and it ended up being pretty evenly spaced.
