powerful images..truly a one off! A lesson to each and everyone to be true to yourself and not an imitation of anyone else.

I had, of course, heard of her, but I'd never seen her image. Although she was not what I would call beautiful in the classic sense, her eyes, and her presence, unmistakable in the photos, must have entranced audiences. Her eyes just pull you in.

+Pakowaniec Your talking about photos from the Victorian era which probably did not do her much justice, you also have to consider that in those days actresses had very little plastic surgery or if any compared to today. Beauty is also in the eye of the beholder and i believe she was beautiful and Mucha without doubt found her beautiful also or else he would never have considered painting her on those few occasions..

Toward the end of her life - during World War I - she was so beloved by all France, that she had herself carried on a stretcher into the trenches and propped up by pillows and in the ridiculously elaborate costumes favored at that time, she recited great speeches from Racine and Cornille and Shakespeare to the adoring poilus . She was no doubt well past her prime and had lost the leg by then, but no one cared, least of all the soldiers, who were pleased and flattered that "la Divina" thought of them and undertook the dangerous trip to be with them. The poilus were mostly poor farm boys, cannon fodder, who died in their millions in the misery and horror of the trenches. Going to visit them was a desperate proposition, at best.

+Blueboyo1 Sorry but your own interpretation is so far away from the reality !!! Sarah was very politically hired, she proved it in 1870 by looking after the soldiers. It wasn't a discouraged attempt for her carreer (which wasn't on the return) but a patriotic act.... She played the theater and shot movies until she dies. For her funeral a thousands people was here and the queen of England organized a funeral day for her in the Westminster Abbey. It's so much for a fading actor....

None of them, just from "unknown father"... You know that people moved in Europe before cars, do you ?
USA's DuPont's trademark has been founded by a French aristocrat in 1801... Family name, moreover when it's with "famous" people doesn't really mean anything.
