Like Windows on drugs
I found a Computer Clan comment with no replies, I'll be your first. :D
And 15 years later, this video is now more accurate than ever, considering the direction Windows is moving towards.
Not only Windows. For example, Android with things like being unable to take screenshots while using Incognito or (at least in MIUI) waiting 10 secs before you can click "OK" while changing some settings. Like, OS just treats you like an idiot who don't know what is exactly doing.
After Windows 11 bricked itself I switched to Zorin OS. More stable and uses less resources.
"I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't let you do that".
I think the reason he does not get the reference is because he is a kid (AKA: Oh god kids these days). Just look at his channel.
operating that tells you when to take a break while working
truly the best OS ever
Best OS ever... 2nd of course to the mighty "TempleOS"! Lol... No but seriously we need more super and talent working on TempleOS
@@bogartwilley TempleOS is truly unique, and so is the guy who made it and his life
Hmm, all new version of Windoze have this feature!
Usually disguised as some "Critical update KBxxxxyyy installed -- system reboot required!"
Whenever I hear about Windows 10 doing something dumb again, I'm often instantly compelled to bring up this video. It just goes to show you little has really changed since this was made in 2001. Ugly window decorations, extreme adware/spyware that we're now being told to accept as normal, more frequent reboots, charging for worthless stuff, and forcing the hand of the user... it was all there before, but it's violently amplified now.
At the very least, I'm gonna hold out on Windows 7 as long as possible; hopefully creative software on Linux will have greatly improved when the inevitable hour comes.
@@kyria_kous I’m sure Microsoft has moved on from the Bloatware now and mainly targets towards UI and the Looks purely because of Windows 11.
@@kyria_kous I'm sure the System Requirements sure got everybody's blood boiling (myself included).
@@kyria_kous At least there’s a Registry Key to upgrade to 11 without worrying about your TPM or CPU.
All it takes is to use Windows 10 LTSC. Everything good about W10 without the bad.
Looking back on this today, it's remarkable how well this video has aged.
To put this into perspective, this was back when AOL was popular (and dial-up connections were the norm), many Mac users were still using Mac OS 9 (Mac OS X still had a lot of rough edges at the time), and Windows ME was still only about a year old (which I think they indirectly referenced in the video, as "last year's operating system").
To put this into perspective, a lot of the annoyances seen in Obnox/OS have made it into other OSes in one way or another. Especially Windows 10.
Well, I think even by when this video was released, AOL and dial-up were fading out, and the latter was being pretty quickly replaced by high-speed/broadband internet.
@@morganrussmanit said “copyright 2001” at the end so i think filming was 6 years before it was uploaded to youtube (youtube released in 2005, mind you)
This is just like software is today, IT WON'T SHUT UP and just work!
lol. As if open source is any better. It's just as obnoxious, plus the addition of listening to smug gits praise it just for existing.
so, basically you want a less capable operating system that doesnt tell you anything? lol
Windows 10 = Obnox OS Similarities:
- Both have advertisements everywhere.
- Both have unwanted bloatware/nagware.
- Both have an annoying personal intelligent assistants.
- Both have forced upgrades/installs.
- Both are spyware - (tracking every move you make).
- Both sell your personal information/data to third-party companies.
Look at the similarities. Do you notice any differences aside from that?
This is why i use Windows 7, the greatest operating system known to man.
The screen changed b4 the mouse was plugged in
5/5 stars
At the exact same time, didn’t expect to see you here and absolutely should have. Keep up the great work Ken!
Wow! 4.2 GB in a single cd !!! That's cool
Yes, DVDs hold 4.7 GB so it must have been one though they were unheard of for OSes back then!
Ahead of its time!
Copyright 2001????
wow 19 years later still the quote " My computer is ancient but it does what I want it to do" still fits the modern computing :))
If any customer support line plays MIDIs on hold, then that is instantly good customer service in my opinion.
Why would throw the monitor
Why not the computer instead lol
And becasy strangely many people think the computer hardware is just the monitor
He works in the industry, and he knows that. He throws the monitor because thats what is near his hands at the time. It is an act of frustration, not necessarily logic.
@@eduardoavila646 Nah, it's just more satisfying to throw the heaviest and most likely to break part beyond the case itself.
this is so cheesy and i love it

One of the best satirical operating systems of all time, I wish I could replicate it.
well this is a weird old video to randomly and suddenly show up in my recommended. huh...I like it. Thanks Google.
the music at the beginning reminds me of a mac's crash noise...
and the welcome to obnox music @ 1:06 sounds similar to the windows 95 startup sound.
Loved it! Especially the last part "at times like these I say my computer is ancient but it does what I want it to do" :-)
So true!
This is pretty much Windows 11.
The fact that it took up 4.2GB of storage would be a massive issue back then, but now it's normal for it to be 17+GB(Windows 10)
Was trying to look up how to make an operating system and came across this.
Good job, TH-cam.
Hey, i just realised something about the intro. The Intro sound is actually an old Mac crash sound.
this was me when i installed windows 8
*+SgtKilgore406 Yeah, you tell them! I really like the newer spyware & keylogger features!
RedHairdo
I agree a lot, there is no malware in windows 10. windows 10 > windows 8 and windows 8.1
macOS when you plug in a keyboard be like: 1:18
This is somehow predicted Windows 10's future
The early access of Cortana was amazing
This is an example of AI computing. It didn’t want support to help him, so the thing terminated his credit card.
I: writing my OS.
My recommendations: "The Worst Operating System"
Reminds a lot about windows 10 😂😂
*Obnox OS, The Worst Operating System*
Windows 8: yeah, yeah...😐😐😐
did anyone get the os name "ObNox OS" was a play on the word "obnoxious" ?
Windows 11 in a nutshell.
This is essentially what an off the shelf computer with Windows 98 on it was like. I'm so accepting of these 'features' from having been through this myself so much.
Since this video was made in 2007, this obnox pc might have the first 200gb fast hdd
Microsoft in 2009: Okay, we are about to release Windows 7. Let's take notes on what Windows 8 should be like.
EDIT:
Microsoft in 2018: We screwed up pissing everyone off in 2012, 2013, and 2015. We'll just code this operating from scratch and call it "Windows 11".
Microsoft in 2023: We didn't make it as annoying as in the video. We should put ads in the OS.
Even today I don't know what software does exactly what Animator did for me. There's a couple of projects I'm working on now where I run old software (Digital Orchestrator Pro, DeluxePaint II) in DOSBox.
I see the PowerBook and PowerMac G4 in the background. Yep, 2001.
just judging by the name you can tell its gunna be shit. i just wish it were real
epicmetalness I take it you haven't tried win8 or 10 or android? it is real.
@@tberry7348 lol but it doesnt have the same stuff: Lighting, Pulling the mouse away, Repeating "terminated" when calling tech support, ect.

Obnox: You really should take a break.
Someone: I said i dont want a break
Obnox: *_YOU WILL TAKE A BREAK._* (removes mouse)

OMG, IT'S WINDOWS 10!!!!!

+Michael Mast (TurboAAA) or every windows that isn't 95-98, XP, and 7. 1-3.11 don't really count tho...
+Michael Mast (TurboAAA) No it's windows 10 This video sums up cortana in a nutshell
I started hating Windows when 10 came out. The forced updates, random reboots to update, not telling me what the updates do, constant notifications to try microsoft products, and being prevented from running programs that I know are safe but just aren't digitally signed (even when running as "admin"). If you work in IT, Windows 10 sucks. If your the standard home user it works really well.
Wow, this video predicted [insert batshit crazy tech from any point in history, seeing how the stream of crap will never end]

This predicted Windows 10 and 11.
I never knew Microsoft was prototyping Windows 8 all the way back then!
15 years from now on and youtube still showing this video in my home page...
They literally predicted windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 in 2001

***** There's nothing trully wrong with windows 8, it's faster than windows 7, and yes, the whole touch concept sucks, but it's also able to use weaker hardware with better performance, along with marginally better support after 8.1
When the first 8 musical notes in the video follows the same melody as the chimes of death you know it’s going to be good
omg it's just like Windows 10 updates from a couple of years ago!! lol
this just feels like modern windows. did you know that microsoft will reduce your pc's power when they think your area has a high electricity usage? awesome company!
This is like windows 10.
Especially the beta. but it's not like it would be any better at the moment.
you cant do anything in it and these constant updates that you cant even turn off easily and the shitty first party softwares.
when the beta was the thing my machine got BSOD just for starting up a native microsoft program like the music player and it was not hardware error becaus i have a workstation.
Let's be honest. The real lesson is don't use new or beta software!
This video ages so well.
The most unrealistic thing about this is the speed at which it wrote 4.2GB to the hard drive.
I noticed that
2001
computers in the late 90's were sold with 10-25gb hard drives already (i have an old optiplex gx1 tower with 25gb hard drive),
i also got an old pentium pro pc from the mid 90's which does have a 16gb 10krpm hard drive, but i am not sure as if it was added after the manufacturing date or when bought..
Conway79 True. 4.2 GB installation from DVD to HDD in 10 seconds? Without BIOS/rebooting? Even these days it takes longer to boot Ubuntu 16.4 LTS from a flash drive.
Conway79 It's a video from the future.
