Lloyd Webber was visiting someone who shared premises with the singing coach and heard the voice and asked, "Who is that?" When the reply came, "It is Michael Crawford having a singing lesson" Lloyd Webber said, "I have found my Phantom."
@@konradyearwood5845Ever heard of a little show called Hello Dolly in 1969? Your story is only partially accurate. Agreed. It’s amazing how many of the original performers of these great shows - embodied their characters, that is to say - through both movement as much as voice. For me, many of today’s principles have become what I call ‘vibrato-belters’, with less character/nuances. As an example I’m looking at Lea Salonga compared with Frances Rufelle’s original Éponine (Lea is of course brilliant) but a good example.
Crawford truly is my favorite as well. He sings it like a lullaby but with a hidden urgency of need. That's so hard to do in a single performance. He truly was born to play this role. Love it!
I remember once I've been in NYC with my parents in 1997. I was crazy about seeing this show but the tickets were so expensive for us we couldn't afford it. The box office attendant said finally wait there are three tickets in the row 50 of the orchestra we said yes. The night of the show we enter the theatre gave the tickets to the person that help us and we headed to the back she called us. No it's this way and we followed. It happened that the seats were in the first row in the middle. We saw each other and we couldn't believed it. When the orchestra starts with this amazing pipe organ that filled us with the illusion it made us vibrate our bodies. My mother and I saw each other and we were crying about the emotion. Then in the beginning an enormous chandelier falls right on top of our heads I could feel the breeze and falls on stage. The director of the orchestra and the singer were fabulous I fell in love with the music of Weber. I'm eternally thankful to that man that with just that enormous gesture made us so incredibly happy.

I was at a convention in Los Angeles in 1989 with my English mother accompanying me. We were passing the theater-and I think it was on Wilshire Boulevard-to see that the Phantom of the opera was playing there with the original cast. I wanted to go so badly, but my mother, in her 70’s was not up to it and I would never have left her alone, so I missed that opportunity. But seeing this was a treasure. I’m in my late 70’s now, so seeing this was a gift. Thank you.
I have seen this show 5 times. Twice with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. The first was the opening night for the public. What a thrill, What a cast, What a musical score
Micheal Crawford’s Phantom was the first Phantom I really fell in love with, and his singing is so perfect. It captures that ‘creepy yet seductive’ vibe all Phantoms should have.
True, I just watched 2 other phantoms and they did Not have it. They were creepy but not in the right way. This phantom (Crawford) was charming and seductive, creepy yet exhilarating, intriguing, moving ,and hypnotic all at the same time.
I don’t know why but Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo make me cry. I really like John Owen-Jones too. It’s so hard to pick favorites. They are all just incredible in their own unique ways.

These lyrics that you hear originated from the Richard Stilgoe lyric performed at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sydmonton Festival in 1985. There should still be a video on TH-cam of Colm Wilkinson performing these lyrics. It's different again, but many of those lines survived into this version. Stilgoe was the original sole lyricist, but then he and Andrew felt they needed another lyricist as it wasn't working out the way they'd hoped. Enter Charles Hart. It's his lyrics on the original cast album and the productions. The video here still has his lyrics, but they use more of Stilgoe's original lines.
Every time I watch this original "Music of the Night" with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, it is the most hypnotic and sensual scene in "The Phantom of the Opera". I've watched other musical actors & actresses portray this same scene, but nothing compares to this original!

I don't think anyone ever played Phantom quite like Michael Crawford. I can't really believe he's Frank Spencer, who I grew up on! I was shocked to hear he originated Phantom. I'm so glad he did, he really made it his own.
There's literally no pause or breath between "Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world!" and "Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before!"
I first knew about Michael Crawford from watching this video in 2006 and instantly fell in love with his phantom. 13 years later, here I am, falling in love with him again and again. I wish I had been born sooner so that I could see him perform live on stage as phantom.
I am from a very rural place, and I did not know that this musical existed until I heard the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum Corp cover this music in 1988. I have a diverse musical education, including 8 years with the clarinet, and this is one of my all time favorites. Crawford will most likely never be surpassed in his performance of this song. His performance is perfect. Tone, intonation, and phrasing are very near perfect.
Michael Crawford is THE PHANTOM! There has never been one like him since. Man and this first version of the song,...SO much better than what we got in the end. The lyrics are better, and Michael's voice is better suited being slightly higher than the soundtrack version. Softer than butter voice!
EVERYTHING Michael Crawford touched virtualy turned to gold. This guy was beyond talented, could turn his hand to everything, he was an artistic genius. No other phantom has the " it " factor that michael had. !!.
Yup. All the Karimloo fans are missing out on what he really was. There was a line in the book where the Phantom said “let them hear a bit of heaven” (or something of the sort) when he was encouraging Christine to truly let loose when she was singing Think of Me

Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently the senses abandoned their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write
For I compose the music of the night
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Hearing is believing
Music is deceiving
Hard as lightning, soft as candlelight
Dare you trust the music of the night?
Close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn’t what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend
That the truth is what it ought to be
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Close your eyes
Start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes and let music set you free
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darkest side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make this song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

Not that I don't like Gerry Butler but I think he sounds a bit harsh in comparison to Mike Crawford.
The first and the best
The only real version. Dark and ethereal in a way no one else has been able to match.
What a thrill, What a cast, What a musical score
he,s the best phantom EVER
Micheal Crawford’s Phantom was the first Phantom I really fell in love with, and his singing is so perfect. It captures that ‘creepy yet seductive’ vibe all Phantoms should have.
riddleboy hi
Hi
True, I just watched 2 other phantoms and they did Not have it. They were creepy but not in the right way. This phantom (Crawford) was charming and seductive, creepy yet exhilarating, intriguing, moving ,and hypnotic all at the same time.
@@UXSpecialist Sorry, I cannot see any charming and seductive, Creepy, yes.
“Creepy yet seductive”. Love it!
After all these years I still get goose bumps listening to this masterpiece...
You should listen to Puccini’s Fanciulla del West to see who really wrote this masterpiece 🤷🏻♂️
That said , I still enjoy this very much!
I'm absolutely obsessed with this song and michael crawford as the phantom !!!
I don’t know why but Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo make me cry. I really like John Owen-Jones too. It’s so hard to pick favorites. They are all just incredible in their own unique ways.
Ramin is definitely my favorite, but I like the different lyrics in this one.
michael crawford ,the best version of music of the night
The ONLY Phantom. Michael Crawford. Absolutely amazing.
After getting spoiled from Ramin's voice, Michael Crawford is the only phantom that I can listen to.
Yul Brynner - best King EVER. There will never be another.
Michael Crawford is the best Phantom EVER - PERIOD.
Saw him in LA. AMAZING. Not a dry eye in the house.
No one can hold a cabdelabra to him!
Or a chandelier! LOL!
"For I compose the music of the night" *casually tosses sheet music to the side*
Amanda Barber LOL!
R.I.P the music of the night
Near the *burning* candles too. ;)
*IT'S OVER NOW, THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* Sorry, you left that joke *hanging from a noose.* ;)
Youtubing Jaguar lol
People keep saying that Sarah looks creepy. You guys seem to forget she is supposed to be in a DARN DIDLLY DARN TRANCE. OF COURSE SHE WON'T LOOK REGULAR!!!!
Bonnie Da Bunny nah, she always looks like that. I have yet to find a video of her where her eyes don’t creep me out.
MlleBree oh, okay
Rooby Roo aww rooey - poor Sarah lisa Tracy. It’s not her fault. She was probably in trance state. It happens a lot to many women. We all have a history and a story. She probably slipped Adele Ricky Martin graham a sleeping pill ???? Poor Adele- everyone keeps mixing up Martin and graham....
The Exotic Shorthair I know
*Darn Didlly Darn*
....same....
Michael is breathtaking in this role, he is the one and only PHANTOM!
I'll never understand why they changed the lyris from this version. It's pure poetry.
Yeah! I have a friend who is always singing the alternate version and looking at me funny when I sing this one. Was this the original?
@@FadzaiSimango Yes, this is the original version from 1986 when it was first performed i was 12 years old and while in London with my Grandfather and Mom we saw it performed as Guests of some British Army friends my Grandfather served alongside, it was later changed after Michael Crawford left the production in LA
Agreed. The original had more class.
Why do they now emit the line “ for I compose the music of the night” ?
It's not even close. Michael Crawford is the best Phantom.
Who's here from.the free version that was released during quarantine ?
John Gallagher me!
John Gallagher Me too!
@@suegourd8211 I've been kicking myself since the late 80s ..we had the London original cast here in Toronto including Michael Crawford who I loved in the britcom Some Mothers do have em ..anyway one of my great life regrets is not going to see it at the time in high school when our school drama club was going ..all because I was to cool to let people know I might have been into it. ..if it ever comes back I'm def going 👍
I was a fan long before the quarantine release but had never seen the stage performance and LOVED IT.
Me!!!!!
Watched it twice
One of the most beautiful things on stage I've ever seen. Michael Crawford was absolutely incredible...
Michael Crawford looks so damn unrecognisable as the Phantom because he looks so much different in real life, it's amazing. He's the one and only true Phantom...
This was the Phantom, Without doubt Michael Crawford's skill in this role, the softness yet power, every word pronounced. Sarah Brightman, young, beautiful, talented actress and singer. There are many talented people but to have it all come together as it did so very beautifully. Your emotions soar. A master piece of work! Who would have thought that Michael Crawford could have given such a Magnificent piece. One very talented man.
I do hope his life has been blessed as he has blessed us.
Michael Crawford will always be my phantom!
His voice is literally like an angel. I can’t believe I found this live! If he sang this to me I would immediately fall in with him. 🎼😍
HANDS DOWN, the best phantom that ever was. I just cried over how beautiful his voice and scene this truly is.
many men have sung this song over the years, but only michael's version brings the goosebumps and the tears, thank you ALW for such a mesmerizing song
The voice of michael crawford has a life of its own. It’s on another level!🙌🏻
Definitely!!
When Michael Crawford sings this song, I forget to breathe.
All in all, that is one seriously talented dude. Kudos, Mr. Crawford.
"Listen babe, I'm hot in the dark where you can't see what you're looking at"
- This Song
Michael Crawford, just superb.
I just love his little smile at the end. Michael is the one true Phantom!
I want to specially appreciate you for being a big fan thanks for your nice comment on my post, it means a lot to me. I want you to send me a direct message via Hangouts using my personal email. A hell of a way of saying,," Be Mine "
And so romantic too because you feel that his interpretation of Erik genuinely truly loves her.

“Close your eyes, for your eyes will only tell the truth, and the truth isn’t want you want to see.”
Love that line :)
The dissonance and resolution of the strings while Michael holds the final note is pure magic
Michael was sensational. I haven't been able to connect with anyone else in this role. Gorgeous. x
No other Phantom for me except Michael. He brought something to it that I haven’t seen duplicated in the several Phantoms I’ve seen since.
I find that in every phantom video, Sarah either looks like a teenager just starting to wear makeup, A killer Phsyco, Or someone wayy too interested in you.
Rebecca Rempel it’s the eyes. I’m more afraid of Sarah Brightman than the Phantom.
i think Sarah is trying to look mesmerized under the spell of the phantom. that is the effect a narcissist like the phantom can have on his prey.
Jake Miller He's not a narcissist
I see why you think that, but he isn't, not in the movie and especially not in the books. :)
That's what makes her so great in the role to me. She looks like a reanimated corpse.
KateKat overly attached girlfriend meme
I love how he sings low for most of the song but then at 2:45 he goes high and then goes back to low, GOSH none other like Michael Crawford.
Get chills and goosebumps listening to that voice. Just mesmerizing
I love how he smiles at the end looking all smitten. More phantoms should do that.
There was only ever one Phantom - Michael Crawford ❤
What really blows my mind is that this gentleman was that hapless but loveable Frank Spencer..one of the biggest and best paradoxes in life. Love him.
Michael Crawford’s interpretation is so amazing that it even seems he’s singing through his movements, I mean, it seams his body - hands, arms, legs - are singing…Incredible body language…🌹
I have seen Phantom 10+ times, on broadway and off. I honestly cannot say what my favorite cast is. Phantom is always incredible. I look forward to the next performance.
I watched the film 3 weeks ago and I’ve become utterly obsessed! Trying to figure out dates to go to London and see it in theatre!
ALW absolutely killed it with the majority of the songs!
My God that man is talented, first Frank Spencer, now this
He really does sound like a ghost in this version x3 There's such a lovely welcoming warmth about this version which I'm really loving. I don't think anyone ever played Phantom quite like Michael Crawford. I can't really believe he's Frank Spencer, who I grew up on! I was shocked to hear he originated Phantom. I'm so glad he did, he really made it his own.
I think phantom (in general) needs a hug
Yeah, he really does. Poor guy.
I agree, Michael Crawford made the role of phantom his own. He’ll go down as one of the greats in Broadway history.
What would Betty have said when she found out about Frank consorting witrh another bit of crumpet???????? WHHOOOO EEEERRRR BETTY
did you also grow up with Cornelius Hakl? bc i did lol
There's literally no pause or breath between "Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world!" and "Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before!"
Honestly Michael Crawford was the best Phantom...his voice, especially in this song, gives me chills every time
This man’s vibrato needs and Oscar
there is something about his voice which is so hypnotising and i dont know what it is but i love it
The slight grin on Michael's face when he struts to where his sheet music is kept. Haha!
I love Michael Crawfords voice so so much❤
I first knew about Michael Crawford from watching this video in 2006 and instantly fell in love with his phantom. 13 years later, here I am, falling in love with him again and again. I wish I had been born sooner so that I could see him perform live on stage as phantom.
Michael Crawford, Andrew Lloyd Webber...amazing combination, and with Sarah Brightman, well...
Wonderful comment
Sarah's eyes in this video always freaked me out
Courtney Michelle Crazy eyes brightman
and the phantom was supposed to be scary !😶
Her whole face has always made me uncomfortable, idk it's hard for me to focus on
Interesting, Rooby. I can see the similarities to actresses in silent films based on your insightful remarks.
Still creepy as hell
Michael Crawford is THE PHANTOM! There has never been one like him since. Man and this first version of the song,...SO much better than what we got in the end. The lyrics are better, and Michael's voice is better suited being slightly higher than the soundtrack version. Softer than butter voice!
EVERYTHING Michael Crawford touched virtualy turned to gold. This guy was beyond talented, could turn his hand to everything, he was an artistic genius. No other phantom has the " it " factor that michael had. !!.
His little smile at the end is adorable.
Dude can legit sing. Mad respect. He's got hellacious pipes in him.
I didn't know the original lyrics were so haunting and beautiful! I love the lyrics now, but I was not prepared for these!
Yup. All the Karimloo fans are missing out on what he really was. There was a line in the book where the Phantom said “let them hear a bit of heaven” (or something of the sort) when he was encouraging Christine to truly let loose when she was singing Think of Me
These are the after previews lyrics. They spruced them up a bit.
I very much prefer the new lyrics
