Buck Bantam BHW: Field Utility Favorite

  • The light weight Buck Bantam BHW folding knife is excellent in role. The question is, what is the role of this somewhat large, non spring assisted blade? With a 3 5/8" 420 HC stainless steel blade, thermoplastic handle, mid-lockback, a nice lanyard hole, and some fair jimping on top and bottom, this knife has it's limits, but also plenty of strengths. After a period of every day carry, I chose to place this knife into a "field utility" role. I now use it for hiking, camping, shooting excursions, and other outdoor activities where a pricier EDC blade might be in jeopardy of getting lost or damaged. I highly recommend the Buck Bantam BHW for use in this role, and I'm certain that if you put it in the same role it will serve you well. I forgot to mention that it also makes a great ice breaker when closed, and I don't mean a conversation piece. Wrap your thumb over the top and you can quickly smash up a bag of ice with the base of the handle; the other party goers will thank you for your foresight! With such a low price, and so many uses, why not pick one up?

Another easy 1 hand open, turn the back of the blade down, open it a bit with the thumb stud, then finish with the wrist snap. I have owned one of thies for about....8-10 years i believe. I have bought many knives, this is one of my favorites. Its razor sharp, i dont oil mine, no rust, heavy use, no blade play, its a beast. I use it for making squirl traps, widdeling, anything i can think of out in the bush. Its a knife that wont let you down.

FYI, this is a GREAT knife to leave in your tackle box, or in your range bag. For $20, it's an awesome camping and all around knife. I personally don't care about how fast you can do one handed opening & closing - just that it cuts stuff when the need arises.

Just got one and kept it on my belt camping Father's Day weekend. Made some crawdad rods, removed a baby cactus, opened food packages, cut down plastic bags. It was great not worrying about chipping the blade on rocks. Sharpened a burr out of it a few days later. Good cheap knife, but orange is better to not lose it. Can't disassemble the rivets to wash it out or grind the ridiculously stiff lock back though.

Picked up one of these yesterday on impulse. Not sure yet what I will use it for, probably take it camping when I want to save weight. It's fairly light for its large size.

In my pocket every day. Where I'm from nobody will freak out when I open it, in fact over half the women I know carry a knife.

Have to disagree with the comments about large knives for EDC. All I carry are larger knives for EDC. Sometimes even a fixed blade. Never had anyone say a word or bat an eye. Carry what you like and what works for you. Don't worry about what other people think.

I know this is an old video, sorry to resurrect the comments here. But I accidentally popped the spring bar out of my bantam and I can't find any videos on how it's assembled. It seems super simple but I wonder if I lost a smaller spring or any small pieces, because I can't seem to get it to go back together.

Total Thumbs Up!! Great video!! I've been eyeballing the Buck Bantam BHW, and after watching this video I think that my initial instincts were correct. Great knife for the price. Maybe not to carry on one's person, but perfect for the B.O.B. or tackle box or under the rear seat in the truck. I'm gonna go ahead and get myself one. Thanks again for a great video.
    Cheers,
    MrWheelie19

it's kind of weird, i bought one of these knives and on the blade it says U.S.A. but my friend bought the exact same knife from the same store and the usa engraving is replaced with a small china mark.

"whip this out". Quite the exaggeration. LOL is not a "big' knife! This isn't a scary knife. This isn't a heavy knife. I wouldn't ever feel this in pocket. This is a very dramatic description.

Which knife would you recommend for carving wood? Is the Bantam BHW good for cutting wood?

  • @millwrightman99

I tell you what I use mine for , As an emergency blade in my car center console in conjunction with my pocket small Buck vatage for office use , so the ladies don't shriek when I pull it out to cut boxes or open paper envelopes . Its a great knife and I oil the blade with vegetable ol just in case I need to cut an apple at work that is too much for my little knife .

How would you compare this to the 110? I carry the 110 everywhere I go.

    • @KevinSmithdc
      @KevinSmithdc 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I own both. The 110 is heavier, costs 2-3 times as much but doesn't necessarily out perform the Bantam BHW. I'm a big fan of "great bang for the buck" (no pun intended) stuff. And this thing ranks right up there with the Mora Bushcraft Black as one of the best values for the money. You get a USA made BUCK knife with an unconditional lifetime warranty. It's awesome for camping, fishing, hunting, etc.. You can process wood, process game - just a hell of an all around knife. That it's only $20 is amazing. I love mine.

I bet you did not know that this knife was made in China. It has no "USA" stamped on the blade and on the UPC of the box it says made in China. Not all Buck knives are USA made. You have to know what to look for if you want a true USA Buck knife.
