My mate's dad who served in the REME in Italy during WWII was very upset about being labelled a 'D-Day Dodger'. He was so pleased when I could say, with a level of knowledge, that those who served through Italy had the harder time than those coming through Normandy.
Another first class show. Thank you. The 14th/20th Kings Royal Hussars wore crossed Kukris in honour of their Gurkha association and the 10th Princess Mary's own Gurkha Rifles wear the Hussars eagle.
Great presentation with really nice pictures and maps. Stug 43 and Italian Paras. This campain is under appreciated. My wife had postware pictures from Italy from her family and the destruction is highly visible. A beautiful country, a deadfull war.
My good friend Ken was a sergeant in the 14/20 and told me about this one day. He told me he had killed a Tiger that day. He said the gurkha’s used flame throwers going into the town and the sound of the germans screaming and the smell of burning flesh stayed with him for years. I asked what happened and he gave me a very in depth account. When they went up to the Tiger tank after the battle, they opened it up and it was full of carpets, rugs, wine, antiques which the germans had looted. He claimed the germans must have been roaring drunk when they abandoned the tiger. He gave me some books, some mementos he had from the gurkhas plus his friendship. He showed me pictures of him going back each year to celebrate the liberation of medicina and some metal models of the tanks he had commanded. He lived in Bath with his wife. He had a son but he was severely disabled so he didn’t have anyone to pass stuff on to or anyone who was interested in some obscure tank battle. I wish I could remember his surname. He sadly died not long after I met him. A real gentleman. I miss our chats.
My father was a proffesional Sapper joined in 1920 he served till 1956 He said Italy was a Sappers War 45mils of baily bridge show this point RIP Dad Major W Power MBE (QM)
I'm very interested in finding out more on the 'league table' of divisions the Germans created during The First World War. It is mentioned at 14:05. I appreciate it is unrelated from the main topic of this (excellent) video, but any source/info would be greatly appreciated!
My Dad always spoke of the Gurkhas with great respect . He was mentioned in dispatches as a Trooper in 14/20th Hussars . Does anybody know how I could find out why?
It would be interesting if you could find someone who has some details regarding the Kesselring/Rommel discussions when Rommel tried telling his boss how wrong his (Kesselring's) approach to defending Italy was. Thankfully for the Allies it was Rommel who was given the job of defending the North-western area, because if anyone of intelligence had defended France in depth, as Smiling Albert did in Italy, the whole move across France would have been so much more costly.
I took a kukri into the Sahara where it served me for a decade, to be brought back to Scotland and continues to serve me when I take off into the mountains. It near damn had me married several times over when nomad women fell in love with it. It had those; who would have taken advantage of me, take a step back when I unsheathed it and described it attributes.
When you say “ the 14th 20th”, what does the mean, specifically? Regiment? Battalion? British orders of battle are sometimes more difficult to understand than the German! I’m a Yank, obviously 🙄
It's a regiment, formed in 1922 by amalgamating two existing regiments, the 14th Kings Hussars and the 20th Hussars. You'll find a fair few regiments in British history with the same style of name, the 17th/21st Lancers for example were created at the same time as the 14th/20th Kings Hussars.

Woody and Julian - it is really great when a year+ later I can watch this as a little bit of background research for my book!
Yep, there's a lot of great info in the back catalogue
Congrats on the big number for yesterday's show! Well deserved.
