Voltron Season 7 is right around the corner, but I still really wanted to give my thoughts on the big reveal we got for Shiro at San Diego Comic Con this year! That is, of course, the fact that Shiro had a boyfriend named Adam before he left for the Kerberos mission.
That, combined with another huge surprise excited me as well as most of the fanbase to the point where I believe that Shiro as a character could have a lasting impact on not just Voltron, but also animation as a whole.

Cartoon Universe I’m very thankful that you put together this wonderful video of our favorite Paladin. He is so relatable in regards to his complexity and the trials he’s faced in life. Such a well-rounded character who is not only strong-willed but gentle and compassionate.

Everything you said is what I explain to people that felt like "Shiro sexuality is out of nowhere and it needed to be a hint"
Shiro was a selfless character he would protect those in need, he wanted to keep his team safe he wanted to encourage his team to the fullest he had his own things going on but kept it to himself and him having a disease makes a lot more sense on why he did the things he did. This was great and smooth Character development for him.
It seems that the creators learned from Legend of Korra's mistakes and that's why I love this show so much. It's surpassed the original in every vein to the point that now it's a must watch.
Exactly he wasn't defined by his race or orientation, he was defined by his personality and character. To many writers now try to make race and sexuality the key focus of a character, and forget about the other things that make them who they are. Shiro is an example of great character development built over time, from taking in Keith and teaching him how to be a better person, to being a role model to the rest of the team, to showing how everyone can be stronger and better if they worked together
Shiro's character was well done. and to those that say it was thrown out of nowhere. I think it was done very subtly as it should be. in fact it is this video that made me realize he was gay. i watched all thru season 7 and it still went over my head.
Personally I sensed there was something about Shiro from the very beginning that seem to imply him being gay and for me this wasn’t something that seem to come out of the left field. Then again if the writers decided to make one of the paladins gay at the last minute, he was the obvious choice.

I'm glad they made a character who had a personality, and that his entire character doesn't revolve around being gay. Many times people will make characters in their show JUST so they can be a certain race, or sexuality.
I'm fine with changing a character's race or sexuality as long as it doesn't get in the way of the plot or character development, and as long as it isn't obnoxious.
This is a good example of how to handle these types of character choices.

And what sucks is, they still never even really defined their relationship. If not for the SDCC panel, they could have easily just been childhood friends.Absolutely no character development, so in the end, nothing really changed.

I also love Shiro he’s one of my favorite characters of all time but I’m sick and tired of him being treated like dirt in the show

He was called Sven because in the english dub they made him as a Norwegian. But the original was Takashi Shirogane. Majority of the character names in the current series are based on the names from the original dub EXCEPT for Shiro.

Honestly I’m really glad at how they handled shiro’s sexuality. He had a real personality and was genuine, they didn’t make his sexuality his entire personality and never outright say it, because they don’t need to. Shiro blends in with the cast because they chose to make his sexuality just a part of him, they didn’t make it stick out or be something huge, and I like it that way because it normalizes LGBTQ+ people like myself without making them seem different.

I truly loved how Shiro literally destroyed the heteronormative stereotype when it was revealed about his sexuality.
I am not sure if I am explaining it correctly.
But it was a nice change of having a really strong who is also a main on the show have something really huge in my lifestyle to relate to.
I was afraid to watch it when it first came out due to the everyone on a team being straight. So I kind of distanced myself after seeing Shiro.
I thought "oh. Here's another status quo show"
And then boom, found last year he was gay.
And I'll just say it was a huge self esteem builder.
If you haven't figured it out I am gay.
But it meant so much to me that the LGBT character reveal was Shiro.
I know I shouldn't dump all this in a TH-cam comment section
But I just wondered if there were others that identified similarly.
To Shiro sexuality reveal I mean.
Yeah, apologies for dragging on, but, as you can tell, it meant a lot.
And I'm glad you covered this.
I haven't seen past SSN 2 in case of the spoiler warning you put out.
But I'll check back later after I've viewed the series.
Honestly the reveal was disapointing. After all the hype after comic con, I expected to see a deeply developed relationship on display. Instead, we got a short scene, with a cold romance, that ended.
It felt like we were told Shiro had a gay relationship, and not really shown it. And, no. Im not complaining Shiro was not more clearly gay/"coded gay." I'm complaining that Adam and Shiro were not clearly shown as a functional couple.
For all the hype, I expected deepth, not an after thought.
Well, it's the tail end of a failing relationship. It's like that before you break up. You still have feelings, you still want the person you care about to be okay but you start getting resentful of the other person for not being able to see your wants and needs or that you realize by the end that those things don't match up or align. Shiro was sick and Adam wanted him to stay but Shiro saw it more as a ticking clock for his time on earth and didn't want to waste it. Adam wanted him close because he cared for him and it's normal to want to be there for a person you love if they're going through something difficult. None of these sentiments are wrong but they're both in conflict in how both men wanted to emotionally deal with the situation. Adam would have been scared and suffering waiting for Shiro to come back from a dangerous mission that he didn't have to do in the first place and Shiro would have regretted not doing what he could to leave a mark with his time. He would have come to resent Adam too for keeping him grounded. They both would have been emotionally suffering.
So the best thing to do was to end it.
After this long explanation I DO AGREE WE NEEDED MORE but the assumption that it was going to be a happy reunion from the fandom seemed like a strange thing to me. I read that they were engaged but the thumbnails we had of them, they weren't even looking at eachother and Shiro never talked about him to the others so i just figured it had gone wrong from the get-go and it was settled or was too painful in his heart. In that sense, I wasn't disappointed because I figured it was the case but it was indeed too little, like: How did they meet? How did they fall in love? When did they decide to get engaged? etc.
But here's the thing I'm not hearing: Can we acknowledge that Adam probably thought that Shiro died BEFORE the Voltron team found blue? This means that Adam died believing Shiro was dead too. Ouch. BUT we didn't SEE Adam die... if that's true, then the lack of scenes with Adam could make sense so this might not be the end. Shiro's face will probably be everywhere now in season 8. If Adam survived... boy... that will be bigger than just a reunion. Space Dad has become Earth Commander...
I mean but hey at least they got married so that’s good

Ok ik I shouldn’t compare Legend of Korra to Voltron bc they are two WAY DIFFERENT fandoms but u can tell that Lauren and Jaquiem learned from all the flaws that the show had and fixed them and created a better plot and story for Voltron. It amazes me how much 2 producers put their soul into making this show becoming a reality!! Mad respect for them!! No one truly expected Shiro to actually be part of the lgbt rep canonically!! That’s how you know that the show has taken a turning point and this just changes everything that we thought Shiro was this whole time and made him just even more amazing than he already is!! The way they portray their characters is just breathtaking and though I will be very sad to see this show come to an end, I have been blessed to be part of this fandom and to be able come this far. Voltron to me is a masterpiece and that’s saying something bc I’ve been into MANY amazing shows, but Voltron is a very special show to me....Season 7, the first half of the final arc, here we come

If you pay attention to who are holding the signs you'll see that both who are holding the sign have something to do with the sign: Keith and Hunk hold the Race sign, both are related to this, Hunk approached Keith; Pidge and Allura hold the Gender Sign, both are related to this, Allura approached Pidge; Shiro and Lance are holding the LGBT+ sign, so...?
JW If Lance was bi or gay, I feel like that would just be weird with his character. Not because it’s bad or anything, but because he’s been heavily involved with romance and we’ve seen no hints at this.

What if Shiro died? (And I mean stay dead, this time)
Its no secret Shiro's been tortured ALOT throughout the show by the writers. So... What if, by the end of the show, he dies?
I can imagine a scene where he sacrifices himself, and in the aftermath they circle around him, but the Paladins can't save him this time. Or maybe they could, but Keith decides that maybe, its time to let Shiro rest. (Something he can't seem to do while living.)
I think it'd be a nice parallel to season 6's ending. Where instead of coming back, he dies in peace.
With the disease, when the Galra took his arm and made a clone of him, whether for good or I'll, they healed him.

More like Acxa likes Keith. I personally felt zero vibes from Keith in terms of interest. He was just embarrassed because he was being teased. He could be gay or straight and I'd still say the same thing. There was no chemistry between them. Maybe in the future they'll try to make something happen but for now, it's a one sided romantic interest.

I don’t know if I believe that the writers always intended Shiro to be gay. In the first season it definitely seemed like he was a potential love interest for Allura. This is backed up by the fact the writers had to age down Allura so she was more appropriate for Lance or Keith(the other potential love interests).

That's not what season 7 said...
Season 8 has arrived!!!! And Shiro is not gay WITH Keith. He was gay with Adam but now that Adams dead...in season 8 he's gay with a different guy which i dont know his name. And he gets married. In the last episode of season 8 The End is the Beginning...it shows Shiro in a suit white and a black tie and his fiancé is in the same suit. And then they kiss!!!!!!!!!! Now more news... LANCE IS ALTEAN!!!!!!!! When Allura kisses Lance, Altean marks appear like Alluras. But sadly Allura goes with Anerva and she is never heard of again. (Just saying im a emotional mess because i had tears in my eyes when Lance got the marks. Then when Shiro kissed his fiancé i started to cry....im emotionally happy. And i screamed "SHIROS GAY!!!!!!" I cried for 20 minutes strait.)
