Because you can be convicted of rape even if your semen is not found at the scene. Her injuries were so horrific it’s believable that she was attacked by several people.
They didn’t make a decision to be videotaped. They were coerced to repeat a story for the cameras. My heart goes out to Korey as he was trying to help his friend and the police officers took advantage of his age and his learning disability. So disgusting that the current president (and people like Ann Coulter) still claim that these men are guilty. If the police had focused on seriously solving the rape of the jogger (as well as the other women that Matias raped), then they could have prevented Matias from harming another woman.
@ST 23 I was watching Forensics Files the other day and it was about two Mexican guys who were wrongfully convicted for the rape and murder of a young woman. I will Google the names and come back but everything you said was true in that case. Makes you wonder how many more times it's happened.
@ST 23 Again I agree with every word you said. There are many psycopaths working as lawyers, judges, police officers (Forbes article) and it doesn't bother them to wrongfully convict people so I wish I could be more surprised about those prosecutors you mentioned. Like you said they care only about results and not how they get there They don't see people as people but as objects that can get them where they want to go especially easy targets like minorities. Tbh I can't put it any better than you have. I'm just going to end up repeating everything you said because it was so eloquently put. I will tell you about the case I mentioned earlier. Richard Danzinger and Chris Ochoa are their names. Ochoa did confess but that confession was forced out of him by corrupt police desperate to make an arrest. Danzinger was attacked in prison and left brain damaged. DNA evidence proved they didn't do it. The name of the Forensic File episode is Forever hold your peace if you want to watch it for yourself. There are quite a few cases of the wrongfully convicted that appear on the show.
I would feel terrible to have been a juror and know I put someone away who didn’t commit the crime they were charged for... I wonder if a lot of them have gone through depression or anything for feeling guilty, etc.
One of the kids said it was a NIFE that made the scare on her head and the female police officer told him I wouldn't say it was a NIFE. She was hit with a very heavy object...... Talk about leading the victim into a false testimony......THOSE COPS SET THESE BOYS UP!
I will blame Meili partially for her stance and blame the other portion on the the people around her and the media. This woman had memory loss from the trauma inflicted from her attack. And during this time, everyone around her was telling her that these boys were the perps. This idea kept repeating into that fragile mind of hers then and became the basis for her road to recovery. For her to recover, she needed closure on this issue. So in her mind, the trial signalled this to her, that she could move on. But this was not a factual cue but an emotional one where she was compelled to believe that justice was served because everyone told her so. She did not need to question that belief at all and accept it so she could move on. But her response after the guys were acquitted is solely to blame on her. She chose to cling to that emotional response that was so familiar to her after her recovery. And the bizzare rituals of American society that promotes this culture of motivational speakers encouraged her to believe that her ideas were right. People who make entire careers out of such motivational speaking in such circumstances tend to overly identify themselves with the victim role from which they emerged victorious in their Hero's Journey. The people who bought her books and listened to her validated her and her beliefs. So her responses to the trial and beliefs developed after it was not borne of factuality but from emotional triggers. And she believed these to be factual. Adding to this is the parts of her memory missing from the incident, where the absence of recall can lead to memory fabrication. And this is so easily done as everyone would have kept telling her what happened to her from the media's narrative, which she started assimilating into her own memory's narrative of the events. People do this all the time, even at a sensory level. Seeing the guys being acquitted would have come as a shock to her as everyone and everything she knew about the incident led her to believe otherwise. Her immediate response would be a defensive one, which she has continued clinging on to. In defiance to actual facts, her mind had to justify her own perception of the incident she had spent those many years believing to be true. She CHOSE to not challenge her beliefs and of those who informed her. Why would she, when her life had become stable following those years? She COULD have tried to reinvestigate the issue more thoroughly and allow herself to process it to the point of coming to peace with the issue. It would have opened up old wounds, but the lives of 5 others at stake should have been enough to motivate a person to at least try facing that pain again. But she CHOSE the easy road and protect herself. She CHOSE not to. She has become so invested in her own narrative of the events and recovery, even if it was largely dictated to her and possibly fabricated following the memory loss inducing trauma, that she wouldn't care that she FACTUALLY stands in opposition to justice. And she stands so confidently and steadfastly there still because everyone around her and the information she received then JUSTIFIES her beliefs, in a very cyclical fashion. She will never listen to anyone saying otherwise because her recovery and narrative were emotionally driven, rather than with a careful examination of facts. The people who promoted the incident so widely and sensationalised it (media), and the people who supported her to become a motivational speaker, family included, following the incident are equally responsible for Meili's biased omission of facts. That she never thought to look back at the lives affected by the incident even after the real culprit was found makes her a big part of the problem too. This woman's 15 minutes of sympathy has run out following her actions after the acquittal of the guys.
I live on upstate NY and I am so disappointed and disgusted that I haven’t heard anything about this case until finding it on Netflix’s today and I am in college no less.
What all you critics fail to understand is the fact that a girl got rapped and a bunch of people were assaulted and/or robed right about the time when 30-40 teenagers enter the park. In other words, those exact five might have been innocent but they were part of a group that weren’t.
When you're a black man in America you're always in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was watching a Forensic Files ep the other day about a black guy who was falsely convicted for rape because he rode his bike past a park where a rape happened and was spotted by a police officer who found it suspicious. That's all he did. He rode his bike past a park where a rape he didn't know about happened. Something people do innocently everyday. How do you warn your children against just living their life?

I’d lived in NYC for about a year when this happened, and the trials happened over the next year-ish. I have very vivid memories of this-the coverage of the event and the trials. Tons of attention. What was really shocking was how confident so many were that they were guilty. Probably one of the best pieces of writing about this is Joan Didion’s “Sentimental Journeys”, written as the second trial was wrapping up. She doesn’t so much argue for their innocence as call us all out for being so sure of their guilt.

The officer that helped convict them stuck to his bs theory but he knows he’s wrong. The convictions were through coerced ‘evidence’ not by mistake, i don’t understand why the prosecutor and investigating officers were not charged!!?! I’m sick of people involved in convicting innocents not having any repercussions. Why should they not receive even more time than the one they wrongfully convicted?
I cried watching this movie , those kids were stripped of every rights they should’ve, I can only imagine the pain they went through, I have a baby my own and now I more understand the feeling of wanting to defend your kid yet that was impossible for this kids
Not that the Netflix adaptation is complete fact. With all the (lack of) evidence and the actual court case, how could any jury or judge side with the state? That's the most concerning part to me. The man says, "Why would an innocent person say that", why would a guilty person say that also?
It’s so dumb how they didn’t find no dna on the body of the girl and I felt so bad for the girl because she didn’t remember nothing but if only she remembered it it probably would’ve helped 😭😭😭😭
We all know the victim probably still thinks they’re still guilty as well. Probably why she hasn’t spoken on it. There were multiple victims in this case.

@ST 23 yes you're absolutely right. This system is Horrible!

I couldn’t believe this was real!! I am shook

What all you critics fail to understand is the fact that a girl got rapped and a bunch of people were assaulted and/or robed right about the time when 30-40 teenagers enter the park. In other words, those exact five might have been innocent but they were part of a group that weren’t.

All we do as parents is to talk talk to our children not to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Especially our black sons.
@@namechange.136 Richard Alexander was convicted because multiple rape victims swore that he was the rapist in court. the majority of black people on the jury also voted to convict him.
