  • In Part 1, I discussed the early history of C.F. Martin's guitars and showed four guitars patterned after his "size 2" guitars, invented about 1839, and used - alongside his "size 1" guitars right up until the early 1900s.
This segment discusses Martin's "size 0" guitars, invented about 1954. I show two examples of nice, solid-faced, modern Washburn guitars built in this profile.
Today, size, 2, 1, 0, and 00 guitars, all invented before 1875, are called "parlor guitars," and manufacturers claim they are a recent invention. I started studying them because I wanted a guitar I could take to reenactments representing the pioneer days of the early 1800s. Turns out, it's not hard to put firm dates on the development of the guitar in North America, no matter how hard manufacturers and certain reenactors who really don't mind ridiculous anachronisms try to muddy the waters.
I also discovered several guitars that look "dinky" by modern standards, but which are useful for many purposes, including public performance.
