To my guru, teacher - KB sir. To the friends, distributors, press, cast and crew, To the audience, who made me Rajinikanth, and to the fans - welcome.
Muthu's success is firstly, because of Kavithalaya producers - Thank you to them. Ravikumar (director), actors, audience and most importantly to distributors everybody made this success possible. Thank you everyone.
In 1975, KB sir introduced me. In 95, we have Muthu. In these 20 years, I have acted in 145 movies. Out of these, I was really tensed about 2 movies. The first one - Moondru Mudichu. By that movie, Kamal was already a star. I was to play an anti-role in that movie. kB is like - only i have to do that role; whereas, Producers, and Distributors, and his Friends commented that - he is not good. Look at his face, hair, tamil (non-native). Why him for this role ? KB sir insisted that I play the role. He introduced Kamal and Kamal has become a star. Now, he wants to introduce a non-Tamil person and said that if Rajini’s acting does not work for this movie, he is ready to quit movies. Then i thought, this movie should be a hit because KB sir has chosen me to play the role. If I do not get roles in future also it is fine. I thought I would go back to my bus conductor job. During that time, computers and all were not there. I have done dubbing multiple times to get it right. Many commented that my Tamil is something different and that the Voice needs to be changed. KB sir insisted that I do the dubbing for my role.
Second time I got tense was for the ‘Muthu’ movie. The reason is that the Basha movie was a surprise super hit. Wherever there is a super hit, after that, the next movie won’t really be a hit, in most of the cases. Also, we introduced a new system for distributors starting with this movie. If the movie is not a hit, then everybody will say - the system itself is not good.
The director Ravikumar is a taskmaster. I will mention 1 event. For the climax scene, we needed 5 lakh junior artists. We got only 2 lakh climax junior artists from the contractor in Mysore. Ravi kumar asked if the artists are 2 lakh, because they don't seem to be that many. Contractor said, there are 2 lakh and asked us to count if required. Director Ravi Kumar asked everybody to stop whatever they are doing and asked all the production unit staff (Light boys, Driver, production boys) to let everyone stand in line and count. The count is - 80,000 people. Contractor will get 200/- per person. His greed made him lie that there are 2 lakh artists.
Muthu movie is a big hit and Ravichander played a big role in picture success. During Re-recording time AR Rahman told me that the music is like Hum aapke hain kaun album in Hindi. Vairamuthu sir also said the same. With regards to this New system - Movie after movie the price that distributors and executives pay is increasing and it is not sustainable. During Basha, the theaters asked for more prints and we had to print at the last minute. Everybody asked Rajini - Why all this for you ? Take your remuneration. Do your work. That’s it. But, as per me everybody worked hard and everybody needs to gain from a hit movie. Initially it was 1. Producer 2. Distributor and 3. Executor. For this movie, we showed it to the executors first and they will reach out to distributors for a price. After this, if the movie is released there will be no tension for anybody. Everybody needs to be profitable. At the right Time, with nice intentions and in the right way- if we do any task, God's blessings will be there and Nothing is impossible. I will end my speech now.
