  • On April 18th, my friend and I took part for the first time in a float trip fishing for trout on the North Branch of the Potomac River. We had Tom from Heavy Water Anglers as our guide. It was a beautiful sunny day and the water level was good for fishing. We primarily did nymph fishing under an indicator to imitate the Granham hatch. The targets were wild rainbow and brown trout. After getting used to the extreme quickness with which you have to set the hook on these fish, we had some decent success. I was unable to film catches due to the sporting fight that these fish put up. At times, I had to hold the rod with two hands while the fish ran. We used 10 foot 4 weight rods by Sage that were fantastic. Overall it was a great day and the fishing and scenery were top notch. Tom was a patient and very knowledgable teacher. We will be back!

I've floated down river from there a few times when I was younger and it was always fun and exciting.

Love it. Only did this one trip, COVID messed it up the past spring scheduled trip. Hopefully do it again next year. Thanks for watching!

The scenery alone is worth making the trip. The beautiful rainbows are a bonus. Awesome channel brother. Big 👍 from me.

Best float around here in my opinion from rt220 to black oak. There are some big trout from the paper mill all the way down through there.

Looking at a similar trip. Where did you guys drop in and pull out? Is this doable in a fishing kayak with the rapids and current? Or would you need a raft and guide?

We put in with a guide in Westernport and I'm not sure where we pulled out, but it was a public access ramp down by a car bridge over the river. I would be uncomfortable in a kayak in certain places as the rapids were decent and flow was fast. Our guide was working hard to get us in correct positions. But also not sure how high the release was, either. We went with Heavy Water Anglers and had a great experience.

@@GIBBYVETOUTDOORS Do you know what raft they used? Looks like an Outcast PAC 1300 or 1400.
