  • "A street urchin watches the moon intently... it is in full glory... veiled in its many splendors... can he reach it? Is it possible for a mortal soul to touch even slightly the hem of its white incandescent gown?
Once upon a time in KOLKATA there lived a lonely little boy called Tubelight (Moon). His daily routine included washing yellow taxis and making them sparkle like pure gold. But where is the twinkle in his lonely life? Love comes to his rescue... the boy falls in love with the queen of the night sky-the Moon. With a single-minded determination, he tries to get hold of this miracle straight from the sky but in vain. He realizes it is impossible. Is pure love always unrequited? An award-winning Bengali short film about the little boy`s love for the moon told through vividly lucid visuals in the backdrop of the languid city of Kolkata suddenly plunged into darkness.
Winner of "German Star of India" best short film award at Bollywood and Beyond film festival, Germany 2011, and Indian film festival of Los Angeles, 2011. The short film received some highly encouraging comments from the jury "Like a fairy tale, the short film tells the story of a little boy who is in love with the moon and tries everything he can to reach it. The strong emotional images of the film portray the sad and lonely life of a boy on the streets of Kolkata. At the same time, the director Shlok Sharma describes the boy's dream world with very poetic pictures. The contrast between these two worlds is reflected by camera work which oscillates between light and darkness, fast editing, and the use of almost documentary-like commentary. With regards to form and content, the director of TUBELIGHT KA CHAND has created an aesthetically and technically convincing short film, which at the same time is also a moving appeal for the power of dreams.""
    Directed by Shlok Sharma
    Produced by Anurag Kashyap Productions
    Music by Tajdar Junaid

    Music / Sound: Tajdar Junaid

Waaaaaooooo..... What a lovely story.... Amazing thought "Instead of going to the moon create our own moon" only innocent and child mind can generate such things..... In just 10 minutes it make me remember all my childhood memories..... "CHILDHOOD" is the most sweetest phase of our life where we don't know how to live but still we live it to the fullest.....
The boy so so so so innocent and cute that I feel like to huge him right now.....
Lastly a BIG THANK to all the members associated with such a lovely creation.....

So deep! Here moon signifies desires which boy wanted to achieve. After some efforts, he choosed wrong way (as many criminals do) to fulfill it by stealing bulbs of Street (means others). But as we know, these ways are not everlasting. Initially he was astonished to see the shining glory of his work, but then fault occurred and everything was lost. He was in jail at such a small age (wrong punishment, as he should have been in some BAAL SUDHAAR GRIH). And hence, he got nothing to know about bright side of life and continued going towards darkness in search of light. That exactly happens in our society during transformation of a person to a criminal.

A local kid is very fascinated by the moon and wishes to touch it. After numerous attempts to do so and failing he comes up with a plan to create his own moon using light bulbs. He goes on a stealing spree around the city and collects light bulbs from houses, shops and various other places. Meanwhile the people of the city are enraged that their light is being stolen and petty crimes have increased in the area and everyone is furiously searching for the light bulb thief. Meanwhile the kid places the bulbs on a terrace and creates his own moon, but unfortunately after a while the generator gives out and catches fire and when he tries to salvage it, the bulbs fuseout and catch fire too. This attracts the police and the kid is arrested. The story ends with him stealing the lightbulb from his jail cell. The kid associating the moon to the light bulbs is one of the main aspects or the underlying baseline of the entire story, however no explanation was given as to why the kid was fascinated by the moon one fine day or even as to why the kid felt the need to recreate the moon and his need to touch it all of a sudden. It could be because he associate the light of the moon to warm and he is someone who is in need of a little bit of warmth and affection in his life. Light is often used as a metaphor in many areas as love, affection, beauty and goodness. This could simply be the attempt of a innocent simple minded kid to feel some of those emotions. The filmmakers association of the media to exaggeration is brilliant as it is a spot on and shows how the media actually work in the realistic world but with a sarcastic take on it. His sarcasm is what makes it work as it is exaggerated realism and that is almost comical. The whole issue of light bulbs being stolen is blown up and make into not only a citywide issue but also a national issue by comments like border security brought into it. The movie overall is a fine mix between realism and exaggeration mixed with the childlike innocence only a kid can bring.

Hi... I don't know what the makers exactly mean, but I would like to state what I understood.
A poor unprivileged kid saw the moon and tried to catch it. When he could not, he tried to make one for himself.
He succeeded in this but partially, because the moon he made got destroyed. And sadly, everyone stood against him, he was arrested and put behind the bar. But even in that situation, when he was so restricted, he never let his dream to fall apart.
He grabbed another bulb and started afresh towards making his own moon.
Here symbols are used proficiently. 'Moon' for our dreams and 'theft' for our passion.
One must not look at it superficially or literally.
It has great undertones running beautifully underneath. It is a sheer work of art.
This is how I understood it. But, interpretations differ and so do opinions. One must respect these differences.
    Thank you

The unreality of the film is apparent in many aspects. The boy appears out of nowhere, with no context and launches directly into his infatuation with the moon, allowing you to immerse yourself in his story with no extraneous details to confuse you, although in some cases more details would be useful. The boy falling in love with the moon is a very commonly used trope in fantasy writing and the film tries to bring it into the Indian context. The setting of the film in Calcutta lends itself to being a more fantastical story. The shots of the film also contribute in some ways to the film as an unreal world, if you wish to interpret the abruptness and discontinuity of the story as a creative choice that ensures your attention doesn't linger too long on any one scene.
The idea of the boy stealing bulbs to create his own moon is at once endearing but confusing. It raises a lot of questions that could have been answered if there was a specific logic to the movie. In a fantasy tale it would be understandable that no one sees a little boy stealing light bulbs or the batteries and wires that he needs but it doesn't explain how he understands how to rig up the lights in the arrangement or his connection between the moon and the bulbs. There are hints at the passage of time and suggestions at him progressing in his quest to make his own moon but the imbalance between the logic of the real world and the logic of a fantasy world means that every time you start to understand what's happening, the balance shifts and leaves you with more questions than are being answered.
The media angle was interesting and felt like the most accessible part of the film. The media response was exaggerated to suit the subject of the film but at the same time is an example of how Indian media responds to real life situations, with a hint of racism and impracticality. The Bajaj advertisements for candles was also a nice background detail that added to the story and fit neatly with the mood the story created.

    Tubelight ka chaand
“tubelight ka chaand” follows the story of a little boy. It is set in Kolkata. The film portrays the boy as a street urchin working odd jobs like washing taxis for a living. The boy soon falls in love with the moon and attempts to catch it. Failing to do so the boy is disappointed and gloomy. One night while walking down the streets he notices a bulb and inspiration strikes. The boy starts stealing bulbs until Kolkata starts getting shrouded in darkness causing angst amongst the residents. The film goes on to show that the boy had stolen the bulbs to create a moon of his own. Why? Maybe he wished to attract the moon to the earth so he could finally catch it. In any case the boy is then arrested and the film ends with the boy behind bars.
The cinematography and music in the film is what truly stands out. It is beautifully shot. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the other aspects of the film. For example though the film is beautifully shot the editing needs work. The fast and documentary type pace of the movie does not go with the rhythm of the music and therefore there are a few scenes that change abruptly. Not to mention the obvious contradiction in the scene where a man explains that the thief may soon enter houses after the film has already established that the thief steals bulbs from inside the houses too. The story itself is quite predictable. The use of typical archetypes and stereotypes shows that the film is more of a commercial crowd pleaser rather than an innovative or creative movie. The last scene where the boy is behind bars is just an overly used technique and is overly dramatic like everything else in the film.
To the common viewer the “tubelight ka chaand” is a great film with an inspiring theme. It is definitely a crowd pleaser. But to anyone who looks for something new in a film it will definitely disappoint. The obvious plot and overly used moral theme of the film added to the seemingly hasty editing of the film makes for a horrible combination. The director has used his good aesthetic sense to hide all the bad points of the film to the common viewer. Having said all this I guess at the end of the day everything is business and this is at least a film that will sell.

    For an assignment:
A boy is seen washing a car window on the streets of Calcutta. He is seen to be living on the streets and sleeping on a terrace occasionally. One night he sees the full moon and instantly is attracted and mersimized by the sight. He starts stealing light bulbs from surrounding neighbourhood areas. He also collects batteries, wiring and other electrical equipment. This attracts the attention of the media and we see various people being interviewed coming up with their own theories and notions about the "bulb thief" ranging from being a cross border illegal immigrant to a psychologically damaged child. The boy is soon seen on the terrace emptying a sack full of lightbulbs roughly even breaking some in the process. He assembles them in a gigantic circle and connects the wiring and batterys almost as professionally as a technician. He lights them the giant glowing sphere seems to resemble the moon. However soon a fire starts due to a short circuits forcing him to put it out.The boy is seen being taken away by the police with the news item that the "bulb thief has been caught"..It then cuts to black.
Unrealism - The film tube light has factual as well as exagerrated errors. The fact that the boy is able to steal so many light bulbs without being caught or even seen once despite the increasing paranoia and heavy media attention. Also his extensive knowlege and skill in handling extensive electrical equipment is something to really ponder about.Another thing that looked innacurate was the fact that the boy had almost no reaction or troubled expressions on his face while being taken away by the police in the end. Despite all the shortcomings the movie pulls off the plot relatively well with a good musical and well placed lighting and pace.
