    Thanks, Graeme & Mike for an excellent film. I was taken fly fishing in Scotland by my now X father in law & its a learning curve but once you've mastered the casting that's half the battle. I had the usual beginner thing of hooking yourself, I'm not going to say it's easy but once you've got it down its awesome.

    Glad you are enjoying them. I just filmed one a few days ago on fishing the Mayfly as nymph and dry. Should be up in a few weeks, but first a film-fest of fishing for the shore anglers with five new films in a row due to go up. Trout will be after those. Thanks for watching, and keep spreading the word !!

    I've always thought that fly fishing was a difficult thing to do but after watching the video it doesn't seem as hard as I thought, when I have the money I'll have to get out there and try it for myself and I may become addicted. That video really helped me out a lot because I haven't even held a fly rod in my life. Thank you for the video :)

    Have no idea on starter kits. Best to get hold of fly fishing club secretary in your area, see if they have members wanting to sell second-hand gear for a cheap price. Plus you'll get good info on where to fish I'm guessing, plus a bit of advice. Try fly fishing forums.

    The norm would be about a 6 weight,but I think we were using 7/8's that day. If new to it,get a weight forward line,it will help you cast better. Double tapered lines are more for dry fly fishing where you need a more delicate presentation. Weight forwards will cast further,and better into any breeze.

    Yes, its a commonly used liquid detergent. You can mix it with a powder called Fuller's earth and make up a paste for smearing on the leader.

    Ever thought of contacting a fly-fishing club ? They might have some members who have second-hand equipment surplus to their requirements, and you could pick up something that is better value than buying new. Plus a club might have a junior section as well.

    Just done a film using a tungsten head Hawthorn and caught well.Should fish well right through the summer.Size 10 hook. If on a reservoir I find the Jersey Herd is a good early starter

    I can't remember as a lot of the stuff I use is old and names are either worn off or not on there if I built the rod myself. You don't need to spend a huge amount getting fly fishing equipment.Don't get talked into a top end price rod. If I bought a high price set of golf clubs I still couldn't play like Tiger Woods !! But I do OK on a cheaper set . Start with something around a 6/7 weight outfit.And get a plastic or composite reel,it only stores line,and will be lighter on your wrist.Good luck.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not from me as I sold all my fly tying kit !! But I've done plenty of it,so know the satisfaction of catching a trout on a fly you have tied yourself .I'm hoping the professional fly tyer Sid Knight might be able to let us film him.We'll let everyone know if it happens.

    Got the shampoo from those freebies at hotels. Replaced it with Fairy liquid just a kitchen washing bottle ? I use it as a cheap degreasant for the leader. You can do it every dozen casts, or particularly on still days when the ripple doesn't break the surface film and so the fly sinks slower. I want it down fast so I can get it in front of the trout's "kill zone".

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I used to tie my own flies,but now use a professional Fly Tyer called Sid Knight who is a specialist.Look him up on his site-Dognobbler and you should get a better description of the flies we use. The outstanding fly for me last season was tied by Sid and called a "Pearly DaddyLonglegs".It was quite outstanding.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You'll have wind to contend with on any open body of water. I would say a 7/8 weight should be fine, but make sure you get a forward taper line to help you out on breezy conditions.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cost of a ticket includes a set number of fish you can keep.The number changes depending on the type of ticket you buy.

  • @TAFishing

    They are Florida "Flats" hats for out in hot sun/shallow water. Some have neck cloths as well, plus long peak to shut out sunlight so you can spot Bonefish easier. Don't know if they are sold in UK. Try Capt. Harry's Fishing Store,Miami,Florida.They usually have them. Guess they have a website.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The leader is about 9 feet.The flyline,which is basically your casting weight,is about 25 yards long on average. If you are a beginner a forward taper line will help you cast easier.

    You need instruction.Sounds like the classic windscreen wiper cast. You need to load the rod up more, using harder flicks to make the bends of the rod do the work for you. And watch your backcast uncurl so you know when to apply forward power. Have a look online, see if there are any free tutorials. Might get you on the road a bit.

    Same as freshwater hook sizes ,18 is smaller,size 10 is larger. Then when you get up to a size 2 freshwater,they go into sea sizes,1/0,2/0 etc,but going up to 14/0 which is huge.

    Great video. It was informative and interesting. A good mix of practice 'In the field" as well as in real conditions. I would have loved to see a tangle though and an explanation of why and how to prevent it. Lastly, I suppose since it's a fishery it's okay to take the bigs ones with you. Here in Canada, if we caught anything that large in the wild it would be photographed and released. Keep up the great videos!

    I would have thought somewhere around 8ft 6 inch would be ideal.Anything longer will mean more leverage for you and it might be tiring.Don't go for distance first.Go for accuracy and good presentation.And a smaller fly reel to make the outfit lighter.Don't buy a metal fly reel,get carbon or plastic types,they will be lighter too. Your local fly fishing shop may be able to help you,maybe with a secondhand outfit to start with.

    We don't eat them. We give them to fish lovers to know how to cook it properly. I use the guts and carcasses for my big sharks catches here in the UK though. They make the best chum ever. Had a 200lb Porbeagle eat a 3lb Rainbow trout head right by the boat once. Sucked it down like a trout taking a Mayfly. Was tagged and released.(The shark....not the trout head !)

    mate, a little Tip I was told by a Lengend in Australia 35 years ago when I started, master fishing with nymphs, remember they are 90% of the fish diet. remember to fish them slow, twitch the tip of rod. also in spring small wet flies, small streamers, fuzzy wuzzy, hammils. red and black matuka, olive wooly buggers. What country you from as in England they use a lot of buzzers, which are a small nymph, read as many books as you can especially entomology books,

    Great video and very informative, thanks you guys! I've seen many of your other saltwater fishing videos and was delighted to find this one detailing fly fishing techniques for the absolute beginner (which would certainly apply to me!). I'm reading that you recommend 6 weights and above for fish in these classes (5-10lbs) so would a 5 weight be inadequate? As a result of your encouraging video I am contemplating purchasing a beginner 8'6"/9' 5 weight as a general purpose rod with an aim toward small mountain creeks & streams of the northeastern United States. What an enviable treat it would be to fish Avington, you guys are truly blessed! Thank you, Sean

    Quick question here lads... I have recently done a lot more fly fishing lately and I was curious whether you should play bigger fish on a reel rather than pulling the line with your fingers (which I prefer). Look forward to hearing your view.
    Tom

    • @HampshireAnglingTV
      @HampshireAnglingTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not too good an explanation, whether you should wind on a reel with big fish or pull the line to get contact with the fish...

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hampshire Angling TV Hi Tom, when it comes to big fish we prefer to play it on the reel. If that fish is stripping line and goes near over hanging trees etc, you need to move from where you are. You then have to drag all that line you have on the floor through bushes etc, it might get snagged/caught up and just be a general nuisance whilst all you want to be doing is focusing on the fish. So better to be playing it directly on the reel then you can move up and down the bank quickly and avoid snagging your line. But I guess it is a matter of personal preference. Hope that helps.
      - Mike
