    ASMR aside, this was damn interesting! My grandfather was a cobbler, but he got senile and died before I was old enough to talk to him about this stuff so it was really interesting to see something along a similar line as to what he did. Yeah, I'm a huge nerd, interested in how everything works. Anyway, thanks, it was cool!

    telling from how these heavy tools are held to the table with with a simple iron ring, the man must have excellent core strength, the ability to guide the majority of the heavy iron tool through the wood whilst also manipulating the wood to achieve the right cut must need so much strength. almost like holding a pull up mid air for 5-10 seconds. Looking at his hands also, this man is a very skilled wood worker.

      He likely means detached. I was humorously pointing what a ridiculous idea that is. Realize how he explains that the handle is angled to aid in cutting in a curve and how the whole handle and blade reinforcement is made of forged iron. It would made for a ridiculously bad weapon. Heavy, unwieldy, hard to aim your strike and with a great chance of injuring yourself more than the enemy you swing it to

    That is a great video and thanks for posting. My gggg grandfather Thomas Walton (1809-1883) of Allostock, Cheshire, identified himself as a “clogger or shoemaker”, in each census during; 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and even 1881. At the time of the 1881 census Thomas would have been 72. Your video has given me a sense of how much skill was involved, and the tools he may have used. Is it likley that he sold these shoes himself, or that he worked in a shop. Don Brown Newcastle Ontario.

    A tool and the shape imprinted in the brain of that man, and all the muscle memory of years and years of working.
    Oh, actually it’s different tools.
    8:32 „The Blocker“ or „Stock Knife“; Clog Knife
    11:44 „The Hollower“
    14:36 third tool (I use what caught on well, I took a cam(?)) „very much like a spoon knife“
    16:05 back to Stock Knife
    18:34 „The Gripper Bit“ (V-blade) and a vanished tool maker (Matt Sears from Pembrokeshire)
    22:54 Canadian Maple, Indian Water Buffalo; The standard „English“ way of nailing things vs how Thomas James did it with a piece of thread
    25:47 how to get a straight onto a curve; then have the customer try it on: made to measure / benefits of a Village Trade
    26:24 a Welsh Slipper was a yard boot; very economic use of materials
    27:10 an english clasp - two manufacturers in the North: „John Watts“ and „Horsefields“
    28:00 five or six strands of cotton and two types of heavy wax (- one for winter, one for summer), a needle like a surgeons needle plus Russian Boar‘s Bristles; the old fashioned stitch: ideally it never comes lose (just by friction) and hides the joint, but you can’t fix it.
    30:45 brass nails and bent iron
    32:37 something I do that others don’t; something else you can do in addition / what they do in Spain; you don’t want the leather proud, especially not for a dancing clog
    34:51 Clasps and Buttons
    38:06 😊
    38:46 Leather straight from the Tannery: Joseph Clayton, Chesterfield; also: traditional Leather Patterns are made from metal / tin(?)
    41:12 examples of clogs made for customers
    Bit of a shame that the original playlist has so few views th-cam.com/play/PLh90tMebFBJ-tbWMUkZINMZvKFufNj3MA.html

    • @jeremyatkinson4976
      @jeremyatkinson4976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spanish knives are really awful, and there are far fewer styles Possibly more elaborate but less sophisticated.

    • @TheGrmany69
      @TheGrmany69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeremyatkinson4976 This is simply not true, I've seen documentaries of Spanish craftsmen making "albarcas cantrabras" and similar clogs and they are just as elaborate and sophisticated as you could imagine, they were meant mainly for farming in soft soil in cold weather, that's the reason why they are like that, in fact you need thick wool socks and a pair of light weight footwear to use them as they are more like a protection for said footwear, they remember me to getas.

    • @TheGrmany69
      @TheGrmany69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And by the way the tools are basically the same, specially to shape the log, in the British, Italian and Spanish versions of the craft.

    • @jeremyatkinson4976
      @jeremyatkinson4976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGrmany69 I was referring to their versions of the british style clog. The carvers of those also went to Switzerland to carve that style. The best knives I came across in Galicia were french. The metallurgy on the Galecian knives was primative in the extreme, basically pre industrial revolution barter technology. I was given a set. They used willow, birch and alder. The knives weren't up to carving sycamore, which was only used for the all wood style . I did go to Quintalla in Cantabria to visit a carver of their amazing all wood clogs. He'd never seen the free form guillotene knives that the brits and galagos used, was a bit nonplussed when I showed him. He was a stunningly good craftsman, far better than I could ever be, used birch and walnut. I have to say the welsh knives I've got are not very good either.

    • @TheGrmany69
      @TheGrmany69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeremyatkinson4976 Very interesting in the details of your explanation, and you are right about metallurgy there, Oscos Eo not so far form Cantabria still uses water wheels to produce knives, though they are sold more like a cultural souvenir than a state of the art tool, but remember that Gallegos/Galicians are Spaniards as well; aside, Cantabria is a very small "Comunidad Autonoma", Asturias, Galicia and Viscaya are far bigger and they also have clogs using those same tools (or most of them), they even have an specific classification of albarcas regarding their dimensions and accessories.
      I read the other comment and no, clogs are wooden footwear made out of logs, Northern Italians use the all wood footwear popularly associated to Swiss, even Japanese geta are regarded as clogs, not sandals.

    I’m trying to figure out what the advantage of having the handle of that clog knife curving down toward the floor provides. It feels like it would be easier on your back and more controllable if it was in line with the spine of the knife or even curved slightly up.

    That blade though - Holy crap. That seems like the most efficient maddening design possible. A horror film blade attached by a hook and loop screwed into a bench/wood block. The actual effort it took to use it seemed ridiculously wasteful despite his expertise in using it. Was it just me or did he need a better system for using that blade? He completely puts himself in harms way while knocking his center of gravity off balance. Brilliant to him for figuring that death trap out with precision!

    • @jeremyatkinson4976
      @jeremyatkinson4976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No that's how it works. Problem is I'm doing lots of different cuts and it's impossible for one bench to be optimal for every variation.
