I picked up the old trusty brushed 885 and 771. Just for around the garage. Im returning them tomorrow and grabbing the 840 and 793 combo. On sale for the same price as the old brushed turds. Still watching newer reviews and the 840 seems to hold it's own!
The 840 is a nice impact, especially at the price point. And I suspect that the reduction in size from the 771 to the 793 along with a bump in power will be a nice addition as well.
@@TinkerWithTools I trust brushless technology more than brushed. It’s the smell of new brushes that hard to get around. Smells like eggs. Lol. Thanks for this video. Cheers
Nice showing sir! Curious.. do any of all of these collets have a significant amount of wobble? Wondering if the atomic does? Have a couple 887 and there is Alot of play when I grab the bit and wiggle back n forth

Nice review. I noticed you pulled the 1/2” drill bit out of the timber with the timber with the impact running forward, not in reverse? May have something to do with it getting stuck in the collet. A little bit of lube in the collet often helps.
Your lighting is combining with your electronic shutter to produce those black bars. Try syncing your shutter speed to 1/50 with a framerate of 24 or 25 fps, or 1/60 with 30 fps. Great videos, though.
I appreciate the advice. it drove me nuts once I saw it in the edit but didn't have time to go back and re-film. It hadn't happened on the other videos but it will be something I keep an eye on going forward.
What do you think of Ridgid impact drivers? I’m trying to limit my choices to Ryobi, Ridgid or Dewalt because I already have some stuff by those brands, and don’t want to add any more platforms.
I respond to your similar comment on another video but I haven’t ever been the biggest fan of Ridgid impact drivers. With that said it’s mostly personal preference stuff and not something that I feel makes them a bad impact driver.
@@TinkerWithTools THANK YOU!!! I’ve been working my butt off asking around and trying to figure out what it is so I can save it to my notes! Much appreciated!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
The only one I have ever had an issue of the dewalts early on the DEWALT 840 dripped oil out of the collet enough to concern me about the tool. But since that event over a year ago, it has been fine. Nothing to concern based on what I have used.
That is what I have heard. The leaked images look more like the size of the older XR or the current 840. I would imagine (pure speculation on my part) that we would see a modest power increase that would put it more in line with the current Get 3 from Milwaukee. But given what DeWalt has been doing lately, with numerous hits in a row that are out performing expectations, maybe my expectations are too low.
Those are manufactured at at least two locations. (EU: some come from Czechia.) Collecting user experiences, be mindful to ask where. QA will be different.
@@TinkerWithTools IDK it seems they want to keep the same very old 3 speed switch. Dewalt needs to put the upgraded Atomic 923 style speed/light panel on the impact.
Nothing special about this DeWalt dcf840 Basically it's just only a 20V Version of the DCF801 12V Xtreme Impact Driver. If DeWalt wants to impress a lot of people, why can't DeWalt make a 12V drill and impact driver and circular saw that can accept and run by 20V battery??? Just like how they did with the Flexvolt line. That a 60V battery can run a 20V tools.
@@TinkerWithTools yeah. But if you want something more innovative why not make a 12V line of tools that can also be powered up by 20V battery and make it interchangeable 12V to 20V and goes back to 12V.
My 887 is a month old and will not retain a bit, ball spring is perfectly fine. I have to send it in on warranty repair for this issue as I have my m12 fuel to fall back on, but I use these tools daily and it's rather aggravating for sure, I was actually thinking of getting a 840 to hold me over in case I continue to have collet issues but maybe that's not a good solution after all.
I haven’t had collet issues before the filming of the video. And nothing on my 887 or the 850 atomic. Right now the pricing on the atomic will get you a power stack starter kit and the atomic for $150. That’s the same price as the 840 but that comes with two 1.5 batteries. I would take the atomic if I could only choose one.
I've had the DCF840 for a while now and I've never had any issues with the collet. It's a little beast. Great video.
Thanks for the feedback. I’ve never had issues before so I figured it wasn’t a bug deal.

The 840 is my daily go to. The only thing that annoys me is the sloppiness of the bit holder but that goes for all Dewalt.

Hey @Tinker With Tools do you know what the new XR version of the 840 that’s supposed to be coming out, what the product numbers are? The DCF8xx? lol
It will be the DCF845. The haven’t officially released a date that I have heard of but I have seen rumors for the first of the year.

840 is a Beast🔥🔥🔥
Definitely understated!
Did any of them get hot during testing?

I love the dcf850, it works great for hvac and is a sharp looking tool!
I agree.
So there will be an 840 style XR with three speeds later in the year?
That is what I have heard. The leaked images look more like the size of the older XR or the current 840. I would imagine (pure speculation on my part) that we would see a modest power increase that would put it more in line with the current Get 3 from Milwaukee. I’ve had my older Bosh impact driver’s get stuck like that after I really put a lot of strain on them.
Good to note. I picked up a different bit this morning just to try it. That wasn’t the hardest thing I had done which was strange.
I believe that dcf840 will have a dcf850 with 3 speed selector switch. They look the same except for speed selector.
Are you referring to the new XR that is coming out?
@@TinkerWithTools yes, I believe it'll probably be their top impact driver topping the 887

Can't buy this when the new xr has already been leaked. Waiting for that one
I am anxiously awaiting that as well. DEWALT is on on a role lately.
@@TinkerWithTools hell ya I love it!
As someone who works construction daily I can tell you the 840 is crap already went threw 2 back to my beat to shit 887 still runs great
What gives out on it. I am not naive enough to think that a cheaper tool has to cut costs somewhere I’m just curious as to what fails?
Up in fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 baby
The new DCF 845 is out 3 speed impact driver
I have a full review of the 845 against this and other DEWALT impact if you are interested.
