When you are putting the kick starter gear back together, make sure the that the ball bearings are big enough. I noticed that when you took it apart (many videos ago) that the gear end had grooves in the center of the "stops" and that the ball bearings looked too small. You don't want the same thing to happen to the new gear end. Thanks for the videos. Carl
Hello Roadking. nice video of the maytag. I can only imagine a women back in the day trying to start this machine outside doing the laundry. I really love the simple design of this beauty. Nice job too. VF
Thanks Vic!! Yeah alotta families had the washers on the porch, but alotta them had them in the house with an exhaust pipe out the window!! I often wondered how many women died from CO poisoning from leaky pipes!!☺
Yeah it's rough but I'm glad I decided not to part it out!! If I came across a good crank and kicker assembly at a decent price now it would be worthy of replacing that too!!☺
I thought I was missing something when you tried to take out the crank!😂 can’t say I haven’t done things like that before! It’s what happens when you are working in the middle of the night! I watched this video in the middle of the night because I had shoulder surgery yesterday and I couldn’t sleep even with pain meds!
Sorry to hear about your shoulder pain!! I was lucky, never had any pain at all!! The Doc gave me Opioids but I never even had to take an asprin!! The surgery was worth it, I'm back to 100%!! Good luck Bud!!☺
I'm glad you are going to repair the maytag 72. I would like to see how you put in the bushings in the engine. Because I have to do some on my maytag engines. I'm getting ready for a hit miss engine show in MO now. I have it this weekend 9,10 October. I'm bringing my maytag engines and my Ottawa drag saw and other things. I love your videos. Keep it up.
Thanks A K!! Yeah it's rough but I'm glad I decided not to part it out!! If I came across a good crank and kicker assembly at a decent price now it would be worthy of replacing that too!!☺
I love videos like this. I like to see inside these old engines to be able to see how they did it back in the day. I hate to say they look crude inside but the thickness of the rings is huge compared to the 2 stroke engines that I have worked on (late 80's mid 90's) but then again this engine with a little love will run again and I can't say the ones I worked on would do the same. Great job Roadking and looking forward to the next one.
As seemingly unfortunate that it was that the engine didn't start, running may have been detrimental to it's health. As always, I appreciate the videos and look forward to seeing more
Wait that can't come out, well... RK is the expert, he will educate me once again. Oh... hilarious. Human after all. I enjoyed seeing the insides of this engine. What a mess. I was surprised you didn't find the rest of that ring inside the crank case. Looking forward to the next video.
Bigger hammer would get that crank out. Just watch this-woops. So glad you took the pistons and rods out first. Looking good though. Anxious to watch you put it back together. Get her running. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad you decided to rebuild this Maytag. That engine had lots of opportunity to never be right again with all that welding. I'm certain you will get it running and I'll learn a thing or two along the way.
Thanks Tim!! Yeah when we get done almost everything will be replaced, matter of fact if I came across a good use crankshaft it's worthy now to put one in it!!☺
I bet the old timer who put the ring piece in there had no choice. You know times were hard back then. If it ran when he was done -Great. Can you imagine how hard times were?? I hope our young people don't have to go through that. Sorry to be a downer but I am worried about the younger folks. That is why I have a TH-cam channel is to help them out. Even if it is to get a crappy plastic mower running again. Thanks for all you do RK. Bruce
Thanks Mate!! Yeah that would have run fine with that broken ring if it didn't have so many other issues!! It had a major internal problem, the governor was jammed up!! Don't sound like much but the cranks are pretty unique, they are partially hollowed for air and fuel plus the governor is inside the crank!!☺
It's that backwards spiral cut into the crank and that retention ring acting together that keeps the oil from leaking out around the shaft, right? Just like of an old ACVW engine!
This guy makes these old engines work again. Regularly. Some folks just hoard parts and let them rot because the "projects" never "get around" and they'll have to "think about it."
It sort of looks as if the guy who put this together had broken the ring installing it on the piston and decided it wasn't worth messing with and just stuck it back together and sent it on down the line. There doesn't seem to be any way the thing could have run without damaging the cylinder walls with the wrist pin loose like that even if it could have run with half a ring. Lucky for you that it wouldn't run and you didn't ruin the cylinder walls.
*you've got a couple of these don't you? did you sell off the other one you had? Interesting all the more there was to this one, and look how long it lasted still. They sure don't make things that way these days*
I need some of your energy.or you need to move next door to me so I can get off the couch to help you.what would you use that washing machine motor for. Thanks
It's just gonna be a display engine at the shows!! I use to have the washing machine, that was a big hit at the shows but it was a pain in the ass to transport!!☺
RK: This should come right out Me: Really? RK: What was I thinking? Me: Whew...I thought I was loosing it. Hey, we all make a mistake once in a while...no harm, no foul.

Brother RK,
Great Movie!
I watch and thumbs up every movie you produce. Spielberg Shmealberg. Oscar goes to RK!
Thanks Dan'l!!☺

@@805ROADKING That is a fact fella. Just how things were back in the day. VF
That engine seemed to come a part pretty nice. First time I have seen a maytag torn down. Thanks for sharing buddy!
Thanks Bob!! Yeah that thing just about fell apart!!☺
That little Maytag has had a rough life! Looking forward to seeing it run again.

Seen one of these on display powering a washing machine at a show the other day!
King- You took that engine apart like you have done it 50 times before! Awesome!
WTF!! You must have been watching my video while I was watching yours!!☺

Thanks HOW!!☺
It's time to make a 4 cylinder maytag 😁
good morning from England,Finaly the maytags on the road to recovery :o)
Morning Mate!! Yeah we put the new bearings in and have it half painted, we're definitely making some progress!!☺
As seemingly unfortunate that it was that the engine didn't start, running may have been detrimental to it's health.
As always, I appreciate the videos and look forward to seeing more
Thanks Sir!! Yeah if it ran it was only a matter of time before it blew apart!!☺

Thanks Mate!! You can tell Roadking was tired when he does something so stupid it make himself laugh!!☺

I think we might have been a little too tired that night!!☺
With it all torn apart you can really get a good idea what all you need.
Never know what you'll find with an old piece of machinery. Always interesting. Thanks.
Yeah ain't that the truth!! Just when you thought you've seen everything!!☺
I'm glad you decided to rebuild this Maytag. That engine had lots of opportunity to never be right again with all that welding. I'm certain you will get it running and I'll learn a thing or two along the way.

You need to rev it up real high to get the crank out without removing the rods RK...
That was just a test Mate!! I wanted to see who was paying attention!! You passed!! Avagooday!!☺

Yeah Buddy!! That plus there are suppose to be felt washers next to the bearing, they're never there though!!☺
A very interesting little engine, RK. Looks like you’re gonna do it up right!👍
Thanks Tony!! Yeah we're at the point of no return!!☺
Hi RK. You will have it purring in no time. Has always I Liked, shared. All my very best buddy : )
Thanks alot Bobby!!☺
Very interesting teardown!
Thanks Buddy!!☺

Hi mate hope your well
Hey Mate!! We're doing well, thanks for stopping by!! Cheers!!☺

Yeah I agree with you 100% Roy!!☺
A bushing style bearing.👍😉
That works for me Matt!!☺
Looks like it never ran after the last assembly. Good thing, too!
Yeah, I'm surprised we got it to run at all, it had some major internal problems!!☺
I wondered if they were like a Harley or used separate crank journals. Now I know.
I haven’t made it very far but wouldn’t a bearing splitter work to remove that slide on cam
Yeah that would work if we had one!!☺
805ROADKING 10/4 I understand that love the engine rebuilds
I'd like to see the repair on that casting. My brother has a lawn mower engine with a broken ear the casting where the carburetor bolts on.
It came out excellent, don't know how well it will hold up, only time will tell!!☺
Great little 2 cylinder engine
You never know what you are gonna find inside after someone tried fixing it
Yeah Buddy!! It's not too bad, I've seen worse!!☺
How much hp is it and how many cc?
5/8th HP!! don't know how many CC!!☺
805ROADKING that’s not much hp! Well is it a 1972 engine?
@@legowarriorsadventure3613 1939-ish engine...
Sleep tight RK.
Sweet! Exactly what I wanted to watch! Thank you!
Yes! More engine work!
Yeah Buddy!! ☺

That made me laugh too. I thought "He knows a lot of tricks, but I gotta see this one." LOL!
I was thinking the exact thing!

Thanks for the video!
Thanks Buddy!!☺
Nuffa This!
last time I was this early, this comment was original
Now that it's stripped naked, it is all positive from here. She'll be running soon I bellieve.
Yeah, no more surprises!!☺
The problem with purists is they forget who actually owns the engine, cos they sure don't... :P
Alright, looking good!
Thanks Bud!!☺
