PhilTheThrill high school the good old days. School police have the same authority as “regular cops,” however, their job description is a little different. Street cops will respond to call for service (in the communities) like, robberies, burglaries, murders and stuff like that on a day to day basis. Now school police usually respond to anything that occurs on school grounds like fights, vandalism, and small disturbance. We (cops) can all arrest violators if need be, but school police might not be use to doing the things a “street cop” do, if that makes sense.

I was starting to consider a career in law enforcement and just by sheer chance TH-cam suggested one of your videos to me. Fast forward a week or so and I've been on a Officer401 binge. You're videos are great. They're very informative especially the what to expect of this or that. Be it those or just telling stories you always pay attention to detail. Your videos have encouraged me to keep moving forward with the process and make the jump into applying to the local department. So thank you for making all these videos. Keep doing what you do.

In our department lt and above is gold. Sgt and below is silver.
Captains are in charge of precincts and lieutenants run the shifts. Captains pretty much work day shift only and are behind a desk. Our sergeants and corporals are our front line supervisors.

You nailed it! It took me 10 yrs to make sergeant, moving through FTO, Detective & MPO along the way. I knew the people I was now supervising pretty well and always tried to remember where I came from as I did my job. It took another five years to lieutenant and then seven more to captain where I retired in ‘97. My last call as a captain, just before retirement, was a shoplifter arrest & report. I did need a bit of help from one of my guys completing the paperwork though.

      Types of dispatchers:
      1. Experienced, thinks ahead and knows not to check your welfare AT THE STATION - has that pilot voice - the operator.
      2. Sexy voice dispatcher, but is 300 lbs - the cat fish - ignorance is bliss
      3. The badge bunny that sends you messages with LOLs and checks you on facebook - usually has a husband who’s on another shift.
      4. The ghetto, anti-police dispatcher that’s always pissed and will not run that tag for you for days.
      5. The speech impediment - has an annoying voice or talks like baby huey - everyone is too busy dying to acknowledge the call for service.
Anyone else got some types they’ve encountered?

I have had nothing but micromanagers. In 3 years I have been unable to perfect my report writing because each of my sergeants (thats right, plural) want it done differently. Then I have sergeants that I dont even work for constantly, but do with the constant mandatories, telling me how THEY want the report done. The one thing they never teach you in the academy, "no matter how great you did something, youre still wrong" lol.

    • @officer401
      @officer401  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Officer401 your a huge inspiration to me, I joined the local PD's police explorer program and hope to become a police officer one day, I am aware of the risks and dangers but the joy of helping people and making the world a better place one call at a time is overwhelming over the risk's. My uncle was a PD officer for 8 years before medical reasons why he quite and even though he was a officer 6 years ago I still have people walk up to me and tell me my uncle is a great man (I've also had a few not too happy i'm related to him also lol). I don't expect everyone to like me but I feel a calling to protect The Thin Blue Line, I'd love to build a strong unbreakable bond with my fellow men and women in blue, and try my hardest to be on the force as long as our PD's oldest officer on the force of 47 years, I respect your job field and hope I can be a police officer one day.

Oh wow... I took a lot away from this video. It’s incredible how similar things are in the airline world.
As a First Officer, the Captain I am working with MAKES or BREAKS the trip. Fortunately our trips usually don’t last longer than 4 days, so we aren’t always working with the same pilots, however the micro-managers are the worst for me personally. The mega type-A Control freaks that tell us how to fly the jet and never let us think for ourselves. It truly makes the job SO much harder than it needs to be.
Then there’s the Capt that’s been at the airline for 30 years and could care less about anything (which can be nice in a sense like how you described), but it can also be challenging to work with a guy that could care less if the weather is too bad to safely land at an airport.
    Thanks for the post!

Best of luck Jonathan! I’m in an Academy now. Pay attention, take good notes and when the instructors say “this is important to know” or “you should know this”, it’s a good sign it will show up on your exams. Start getting in shape now, and even if you have prior law enforcement or military experience, check that baggage at the curb, so to speak. I’m not saying it won’t help you or your classmates, but don’t let it dictate your attitude or outlook.

I have been a police officer in Ohio for 24 years. The City I work in has a population of just over 150 thousand people. For the last 12 years, I have been a field sergeant. A level one supervisor. I do not handle any calls unless they are life threatening. When an officer request a supervisor, I believe the supervisor should be available. I also believe that it is important to have one unit on the street that does not respond to calls, and can respond to an officer in trouble immediately. I just wanted to give you my opinion. I like watching officer401 and Mike the cop videos. I appreciate you giving law enforcement a voice. on the internet / TH-cam

my father has been on the force with the same township for the last 20 years or so and only made it to sergeant about 3 or 4 years ago. He's going for his masters now, takes every extra shift he can, signs up for every detail possible, goes to every possible seminar and training program offered by the department, he now trains members of our regional swat, and has just been busting his ass throughout his whole career. He is probably one of the most qualified officers in the station (we are part of a smaller suburb so its not that large). Really goes to show, you are definitely right about the length of time not really having shit to do with promotions. He was skipped up in line for promotion on two occasions despite having higher qualifications, this was because our municipality was trying to diversify their workforce so they promoted a woman and a hispanic male before my father got promoted. And this totally makes sense, as we have a primarily white male police force and an ever increasing minority population in our town. They were trying to avoid any "privilege" or "discrimination" issues, which is unfortunate that this card needs to be pulled, but again, it makes sense. He is now working towards captain and eventually trying to become chief over in the next town over. Best of luck to him!

I asked one of the older local cops when he was going to retire. He said that the day he had to draw his gun would be his last day as a cop. He didn't choose a small town police department for the money.
My uncle who worked in a different town retired ten years ago. I don't think he even carries a gun anymore.

@officer401 Video content idea: police interactions with those with mental illness or other mental disabilities (ie: autism). Also would be good to include how some departments have CIT (crisis intervention team) trained officers, which often leads to better outcomes for all parties involved in situations concerning those with mental illness and/or disabilities. Thanks for all the content and information you put out!

When I was a Supervisor for a shift of mall cops here in Houston first thing i told the shift was "Get your job done, do it right, make sure it's right, other than that you're on your own, call me if you need absolutely anything"
I like to personally make sure everything is squared away (just my personality), but as long as everyone gets what needs to be done, done and they let me know I'll be as happy as can be.
