  • Happy Independence to my Antiguans and Barbudans and friends of our twin islands!
I originally wrote this song as a tribute to Antigua and Barbuda for its 30th year of independence. I was asked by the consulate of Antigua and Barbuda in Toronto to perform at a literary night which was a part of the celebrations for the milestone anniversary. I had the pleasure of performing the piece with guitarist Eric St-Laurent and sharing the stage with some of Antigua and Barbuda's great writers and poets including Clifton Joseph, Wendy "Motion" Brathwaite, Joanne C. Hillhouse, J'Wyze and many more.
I thought it would be nice to record the song in time for this year's independence and share it with all of you. Musically, I was hoping the song would feel like it was recorded on the veranda of my Grandma Morrissey's house in St. John's. Simple, acoustic, raw and fun! And the lyrical content... I guess you can say it's my perspective as a first generation Canadian born to Antiguan parents. Although I have only traveled to Antigua a handful of times, I've been blessed to experience its rich culture through my parents, family and greater Antiguan and Barbudan community in Toronto. As an experienced community arts worker, arts educator, musician and a member of the Caribbean diaspora in Canada, I truly believe we have to invest in our youth and make political, environmental and financial decisions that are sustainable for the future. It may seem overly optimistic, but with God anything is possible :-)
This recording is dedicated to my grandparents Vilma and Ossey Morrissey and Jim and Edna Lapps in honour of their legacy, heritage, love and hard work. I hope you enjoy it!
