Creating works in order to sell them is the kiss of death for any artist. Paint what you want, if it sells great, if it doesn’t, still great.

I truly believe that the ethos of Milan Art is incredibly valuable .
I really struggle with discipline as I have CBD depression and sleep apnoea, but I still have this passionate flame burning inside to be a ‘successful’ artist.
I have sold some art but I really want to go for it now I am 55

  • @adelegiles5795

You say doom and gloom doesn't sell but then why is it that artists like Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Edvard Munch, who create emotionally charged art, continue to captivate us? There's a market for art that evokes strong emotions, and this emotional connection plays a significant role in selling art in general. Exploring this topic in a video would be valuable. Personally, I'm drawn to art that makes me feel deeply, and my goal is to create artwork that elicits those same powerful emotions in others. I don't like happy art (happy music etc), and there has to be a market for this kind if art surely?
Why is taylor swift the most sellable musician of her time? Because she is a great STORYTELLER who can connect with others using her personal experiences as a catalyst for her creations.
There has to be a part that's missed within this surely?

Ironically, my daughter and I are both artists like you but she has a BFA and I’m the artist who learned in HS and then picked up painting during the pandemic by watching you tube and my daughters guidance. Thanks for your information! Learning so much about being an artist. I still remember the first time someone called me that ❤😂

Thank you for the great tips. I also have a tip for you I arrived at recently. A good way to arrive at your style is to not use reference when you create art. Only use it later to fix any problems. By doing this I noticed I naturally tend to paint in a unique and consistent style and process.
Sometimes I use reference for a quick line drawing and then put it away when working with other elements of art...

I am from Denmark and I love color - sometimes very subtile yet vibrating color rhythms and tones - for me is like a deep song - and it Can be the whole theme of a painting both in abstract or in more magic expressionistic communing with experiences of joy and beauty and love of all kinds opening into mystery and multidimensionality of experience of life/ nature - 🎵💚🎶🐸🎵💜🎶🦄

thank you for showing this. You have no idea what a difference you make to people like me that’s been through severe trauma, loss, PTSD. and when I paint, even though I don’t have any good paints, and I’m not that great gives me peace of mind losing a child at 19 and not understanding why she did but she did nearly destroyed me and then I lost my mom right after that and a couple months later my godfather who raised me shot and took his life too! This is truly meaningful to see beautiful being gone in my room, but I can for free. I guess just because I need a purpose. I need peace of mind and you guys offer that with your beautiful work and your kind words I think you guys are the best

I'm also from GA, about an hr from Athens. I wanted to be an artist and veterinarian and went through lots of different positions from fast food to a home care agency and several things in between. Eventually I got a business degree and went for training to become a dog groomer. I make great money and have found a way to combine both art and taking care of animals without having to diagnose them. I would love to someday have a bigger space where I can sell some of my artwork and home decor alongside my salon.

You are succeeding because you are like your art- it is appealing and approachable, not out of reach. My art must be lacking this catch or hook. I am exploring your Milan School Mastery program and thank you for your help so fa already. I have a website and seem somewhat frozen putting it backup on artspan. I want to leave some of my successful traditional but also want to master the mystery of abstraction. You have already helped me just tonight in seeing where I need to focus. Dmitra’s comment on finding depth hit home, and I would love to travel there more. In RI landscape painters are a dime a dozen, but few seem to gain depth in abstract, and I think I have leaning towards that. Thank you. Going on too long! I don’t want to put my name here yet, but have conversed over passwords with you a couple times, if that hints at all

Ive seen just a couple of your videos now and I must say I am a little shocked at some of the advice you give. Especially for someone in the business over 25 years. Clearly you have done well with your own work and style, but if you didnt have that as the hook, then you wouldve sold nothing if following your own advice. 1st, just the general notion that an artist should create "sellable art", is ludicrous. "Sellable art" is a machine system in and of itself, and if that is the route someone wants to take, great, but thats not a foundation for an artist. This worked for you as your art is clearly within the "trendy" sort of niches, hence the supply and demand. 2nd, giving advice such as "If you're going to use primary colors, then you need to balance it with neutrals", is just regurgitated rules learned in art education. No one "needs" to balance anything if they know what are doing. The image on the right which you stated was the bad painting, of the sunset landscape done in bright primary colors, spoke wayyyy more to my spirit than the mundane muted painting on the which you stated was the "good" painting. Just as I just voiced my opinion about those two paintings is exactly what you did, as those were only your opinions. Rules are made to be broken. 3rd, "dont spend more than 15 hours on a painting". WHAT? 😢 Where are you getting this? An artist, such as myself of over 40 years, can spend as long as they choose, period. 4th "you need a proper art education". WHAAAT? Absolutely not, you need knowledge and wisdom, which comes from experience. After years upon years of relying upon my sepf taught knowledge and technique, etc, I decided, late in life to go to art school, just to see what I didn't know. And after 2 1/2 years of being at the top in this school, I left, because I didn't learn anything of value that I hadnt already learned through experience. You are not teaching about art, you are teaching about design and trends. The soul could care less about coasting within any sort of trend system.

      @kaberaalenda5988 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yup, true 90%, but you can't deny or neglect that to learn art is not valuable or is not necessary, it depends on what you wanna know because no one teach a born talent artist how to create something new in visual, but can train that one how to perfection his talent, the schools are about standard principals and regulations as science to have same knowledge and understanding to the world about art, but that doesn't mean to limit your freedom in creativities, because in collages what we learn for maximum genius artist is almost 30% of what's we should discover through experience, you can't say that you learn't nothing in 2 years and half there, just don't wanna accept but, something a little you learn't beyond your experience just for knowledge or science of art I'm sure... And Even if some of us we don't spend money to learn through schools but, we all know that we can spend that learning through experience of a lot of failure and succeed vice versa until we reach where we need to go, and there in your experience your first teacher is your eyes, 2nd teacher is your feelings, the 3rd is your trainer " your hands on work " please, so the inspire is the 4th trainer : " the comparison of your present artwork and your past artworks and the nature ( artists, decorated earth ' I mean what we call " life references " are our best teachers and art trainers ! ) So, even if you called yourself self taught, but you learn't from those 4 teachers and trainers.

I mean them somewhere they made mistake to choose good art and bad art, but, somehow 70% they are correct, But, as you commented your truth that I agree is that to be a great artist is not meant to sell more art or a lot of your artworks, but to make one or few artworks that the world will recognize or to make the art that will inspire the world for the good! Leonardo Da Vinci spent almost 4 years painting " Monalisa " occasionally and said that He didn't finish his work as He wanted, the art is the work, the work is the life, life ends when you're not breathing again on this world, so you can't finish good artwork, but you stop where you feel is enough!
And is for an artist to choose either He makes art for money only as his focus or He makes art to be recognized only, or to make art to inspire the world for either his wisdom, creativities, or telling story.
By The Way, I'm a Rwandan academist artist and born with a lot of talent in different art fields, but, for now I choosed to first of all to focus on paintings !

LOL Did you not read the tittle of this video? Why are you complain about what works for them. That’s it. That’s all they’re saying, THIS is what works for us and you might wanna try it. I sell lots of art that most people would have a hard time selling. Does it mean my knowledge is useless? No. Does it mean that it will work for everyone? No. It’s just their opinion. I’m not gonna walk into an AAA meeting and be like “I know how not to be a drunk”. Art is subjective. Just to be clear, I don’t agree with a lot of their views. But I can’t say they’re wrong, if they work for them. That’s all anyone in this platform says.

Alot of good info. but I have such a hard time beleaving that folks that never drawn before have the passion to suddenly be able to be good enough to sell any amount of art.

Your skepticism is completely understandable. And it doesn’t happen overnight, it happens over the course of a year or so.😊

They don't draw, they trace other people's photos and inages that have been digitally cut and pasted into a collage. Then they use that as the reference. That is why they say it is so easy.

This may sound "old school," but... after about an hour of criticism of judging art in the "odd" world of what is and is not sellable... some of us forget, perhaps importantly, 🤷‍♂️... that "Art" was once a place free from judgment, a place of free expression, a place of celebration even...
      Free of "price tags..."$$
(...Foolishly laughs at self, scratches head, looks down, sighs...) ha.

Hi. I really appreciate what your doing for the artist community. Could you please comment selling art in the face if AI? Did AI negatively affect the demand for artworks based on your experience and exposure? I hope you can answer this for people like me who are anxious to know

great video!! I just don't understand, if someone can explain, what do you mean with "too hyperrealistic" how is that bad?? there's so many great hyperrealism artists out there, and that sell a lot of artwork, so i don't get this point. and it's a way of also showing technique, mastery and skill no?
