Ear plugs for Shaved Ice Maker
Crazy how well it translates, you can tell it's loud as heck.
They should throw some in when you buy it lol
I love that this is the highlighted comment.
quit being a baby, tinnitus isn't permanent
@@riz3778 Actually, it often is. There is temporary tinnitus, but each case increases your chance of it becoming permanent.
They have a shaved ice store in Duluth Georgia where they shave frozen milk.. you can add sweetened condensed milk.. crushed Oreos and strawberries. It's so good!!
That sounds absolutely delicious.
Omg James needs to try this
That’s a brilliant idea actually. Sounds delicious!
There's a place in myrtle Beach called Rita's that has this hybrid of shaved ice (made with real fruits) with frozen yogurt blended into shake/smoothies. They are amazing I got one with strawberry shaved iced mixed with vanilla frozen yogurt.
There’s shaved shop called pelicans in many locations in Georgia I used to work at one they’re super good a cheap the largest size is like $6 I think without topping and it’s hugeeee
You can always make ice in the mould then take it out and keep it in the freezer so you always have a stock on hand.
keep them in a zip lock so they dont taste like freezer funk
@@dustinjr1993shut up
@@dustinjr1993 clean yo freezer homie
shape looks similar to a 16 ounce plastic deli cup if you need extra ice molds
I keep mine in one of the big Greek yogurt containers, they fit perfectly and can hold 3 blocks. I pop them out even before they are fully frozen and toss them in the other container. If you use your hands as a heat source you can have them pop out in seconds. When i’m done shaving a block I use the leftover ice to speed up the freezing of my next block.
I bought that model several years ago, still use it frequently ever summer. Probably best summer investment i ever made.
Btw, small cottage cheese plastic containers make for perfect molds for that machine, just put the lid onto the plastic container before freezing.
Also, that company does sell extra molds with an extra blade.
Can't recommend this product enough
Looks like a fun machine for a tasty treat....as long as you wear ear plugs during the process!! 😊
I think the one I have is a Hamilton Beach. I am diabetic and I purchased it to make low calorie treats. I absolutely love it. I don't think mine is as loud as yours. Mine only has one ice mold, so I would make several and keep them frozen until needed. I love it because I can have treats and not feel like I am messing up my blood sugars.
What do you use for toppings?
@@jrchefal They sell sugar free versions of the syrups, also you could probably slightly dilute those zero calorie drink mixes and use them in a pinch.
I'm diabetic too, what do you use? I use to love eating these as a kid, unfortunately I can't anymore.
@jrchefal I found sugar free syrups used to make drinks, and coffee. Some I had to play around with to get the right consistency. I also made some from the drink mixes like crystal light. I even tried flavoring the water before freezing it so it was preflavored.
I use sugar-free liquid drink enhancers. Most people add these to bottled water. It is a nice treat to add it to Sonic ice or shaved ice. No calorie treats!❤
Pro tip: In a pan mix an unsweetened Cool-Ade (you know what I mean) packet and the amount of sugar in the directions with just enough water to dissolve it when boiling. Don't let it go to caramel, just cook it enough to dissolve every last crystal. You will have plenty of syrup for a dollar and the flavors are better than the chemical-tart taste the pre-made syrups sometimes have. It's much easier than it sounds. That looks like a good machine, when I was a kid we ate shaved ice all the time, from a machine that was almost identical but had a crank on top. It was pretty easy to crank and not super noisy. The ice molds might last a long time or crack pretty quickly. Different manufacturers use different grades of plastic for them. I think the short translucent take-out soup containers might be a good replacement if they crack.
I've had one of these for years. The first summer I had it I definitely gave it a workout. Froze and saved a stockpile of pucks for pool parties. Also found something, I think it was just a round tupperware container, that made a similar size but thicker ice puck. Ordered a bunch of the plastic cones and tried different syrups. Ended up making my own out of Koolaid flavor packets and a couple of different flavor extracts. It's definitely best outdoors because of the noise
We have the Slushie version. The finished product is more like shaved ice than an actual Slushie. I think the problem with ice cubes is that sometimes they'll get stuck because they're an odd shape. I have to open the lid and move them around a little bit. It's much easier than freezing up a block of ice.
There was a shaved ice recipe on a Japanese show a while back. You add sugar to the water before you freeze it (10 grams of sugar to 100mL of water, 1 to 10 ratio by weight) and shave it. They say this results in fluffy shaved ice.
You gotta pack the ice down
There are also Japanese shaved ice machines where the ice turns out soft and fluffy. Usually they’re a more expensive machine but I love the result. I go to the asian shaved ice stores but it’s very expensive (but delicious!)
I wonder if this model would be hard to clean well enough if you use anything other than plain ice. Do the shaving blades come off for cleaning?
One of my favorite flavors I could find around here that people stopped selling was Tiger's Blood. I don't remember the flavor profile of it but I remember it being one of the ones that I always use to love getting all the time when I got shaved ice.
Strawberry, watermelon, and coconut
It had blood orange in it
@@AcidPixieArtOfficial no blood orange in it, look that up
Wow, Tigers Blood brings me back, man. They used to have that flavor at the mall for slushies back in the eighties and nineties when I was a kid. Was my fav!
@@masshole4133 Yeah, every stall or place that sold shaved ice around here use to have Tiger's Blood. Use to travel with a fair and even they had it.
I think this has to be the quickest and most straightforward review you have done.
Just in case you didn't already think of it, you can freeze those little pucks and then store them in ziploc bags while you freeze two more. You could have any number oof ice pucks ready when you wanna crank some out. I was thinking that's a crappy limitation, just having two discs, say, if you had three kids. And why can't mom and dad get a shave ice, too?
If dad ever comes back.
I got one for fathers day. Came as a party pack with 6 flavors Paper cones and straws. It has been a great gift that we all love to use!
I love your videos. I laughed so hard during the Ninja ice cream video and this was totally entertaining too. Keep up the good work 👏!!
The manual version with crank costs under $15, if it works as well then it's even better cause it's silent.
Would love to try that can you provide a link
Does the deluxe model come with noise-canceling headphones ?
As usual, I so enjoyed the video. Haven't had shaved ice in years. Thanks, James!
well then it’s beard is probably extremely long by now !!!
@@Brooks0511 😂😂👍👍
@@Brooks0511That made me laugh harder than it should. 😂
4:33 until i came to the US a decade ago (and a few years after that too), it didn't even occur to me that Las Vegas is also a city where people live and work and have jobs outside the casino industry 😄
even nowadays after knowing that fact, and James telling us he lives there, i still have a hard time picturing it in my head... (i haven't traveled to that side of the country yet)
Looks good. Just save up some plastic containers from sour cream or cottage cheese to make a few more xtra ice cubes
I have the Little Snowie Max. It costs a bit more, but I like that it works just fine with ice cubes. Plus it seems to be better made. As you found out the model you bought was light weight and moved around on you.
This reminds me of that kids snow cone maker. It was a manual crank that often slipped off the counter as the suctions weren't as good. It came with the ice mold to make the ice and you can use regular ice cubes. the ice cubes were hard because of the edges. It's not as smooth and it's more like a snow cone than shaved ice if you use ice cubes.
It was the Snoopy one right? I loved that.
@@eastwood34 I forgot about that! We had that when I was growing up! You've unlocked something I haven't thought about in 25 years
Tiger Blood flavor is really good.
looks very pretty! I've been using my creami to make sorbet and beat the heat that way. if you aren't using yours post-review, i'd recommend it.
You should review the Little Snowy 2, it's $150 last time I checked, and it's supposed to make restaurant level shaved ice with LOOSE freezer cubes... Been looking for an excuse to buy it haha
Buy it!! You deserve it ! 😊
I love my snowy. I did a lot of research & it was worth the price.
@@gizmosworld5855 thanks guys, I'll probably break down when it gets a bit hotter in July... Would still like to see him review Little Snowy 2, and compare it to his machine from this video since I love his reviews... But it's nice to have at little motivation from you guys too!
@@masonm159 you’re welcome! I understand. I don’t have any connection with the company except as a consumer. I bought mine when I had my tonsils removed 3 yrs ago. It was the only one I used regular ice. I did buy a small a silicone square mold for both ice & fudge.
I could find a machine that didn’t leave ice chunks. I agree bc I’d like him to do a review too & see what he thinks. If decide to buy one, you call the company, they may have specials not advertised on other websites. I would also try to buy a
the powders & nothing with water added. Why? You will pay for the weight of the water & you can mix it yourself when you get the power. Again, I’m not affiliated with the company. Just information to give to help you save money.
@@gizmosworld5855 thanks for the input, good advice on powders and contacting manufacturer. I'll be sure to do that when I break down and shell out the dough.
As a child growing up in a city, I recall the ‘Piragua man’ clanging his bell and announcing his flavors. We would beg our mother for a quarter, and watch with awe as he shaved the ice using a hand held ice shaver. I always choose coconut, my mother’s favorite was tamarind. Delightful memories!
Shaved ice? Yeah in Iowa we call that snow ❄, lots and lots of snow 🙄 great video as always James 👍
We used to have a manual shaved ice maker as kids in the 90s. Don't know what the brand was or what we used for syrups. Love shaved ice!
I had this about 20 years ago and loved it!!!
had a hawaiian shaved ice maker 20 years ago. looks like they have improved the design. it had troubles cutting the ice.
The shave ice sounds a little crunchy (like a snow cone or Japanese "kakigori"). I'm excited for your return trip to the islands and have some Shimazu's, Matsumoto's, Baldwin's, or Waiola's. Great review though and possibly the closest ou can make one from home. Also, fun trivia… we call is "shave ice" on Oahu, but on the Big Island they call it "ice shave". I always have fun chatting about that with my friend originally from Hilo.
What it's called depends on the island you're on as well as the generation. My Dad (born & raised in Maui in his 80s) called it Shave Ice. A buddy of his from the Big Island (Hawai'i) called it Ice Shave. My friends and I call it either Shave or Shaved Ice.
Yum... sounds good. We've been having a bit of a drought here in the midwest, and these look like they'd take the edge of the heat pretty well.
I could get fat eating those!
Oh my goodness I know right?!?
That's what I need here in Texas during this heat wave! 😅
My husband got the koolaid brand of this at Walmart and we made our own sugar free syrups. You can use regular ice with it, which is great! No need for freezing special blocks. This one looks a little more powerful and higher quality but ours works just fine.
I can appreciate the t-shirt choice with regards to the brand of the ice shaver.
probably find a taller container to freeze ice in to get 2 servings but I imagine they used a little R@D to figure out what size worked the best. Probably should include 2-4 in the package at that size imo.
My family would just make a pitcher of Kool-Aid and if you wanted an "ice cup", as we called it, you'd put your cup in the freezer. The top part would be too hard, so I would squeeze the sides and flip the ice upside down (yes, this could be messy, lol). Thr bottom was softer and easier to get your spoon into. Good times.
Our school cafeteria (in Hawaii) would make a version of ice cups and you could buy them after school for 15 ¢...yes, I'm old 😅. Recipes differ but most used a combination of Malolo brand strawberry or fruit punch syrup (Amazon carries it!) condensed milk and water.
I Love Your Channel .
And Your Very DETAILED VIDEOS ..
Thank You 👍
To dampen the sound you can carefully take it apart and line the inside with a thin rubber that you can affix with hot glue. I did this to mine and it made a massive difference on how loud it got. I would say 35% quieter or so.
I have that same one & we love it. I think im on my 3rd summer with it
In Louisiana we have that too. We call it New Orleans shaved ice.
I always hated snowcones because it's just hard ice floating in Watery syrup. Shaved is the only way to go.
It's a debate as to whether snoballs were invented in New Orleans or Baltimore. I'm in Louisiana too, we know the answer.
ya i love this thing. i use ice cubes from my ice maker which i put reverse osmosis water in. ya its better to use the cup but my ice cubes work fine for me.
seems to work fine. The loudness is unavoidable due to what it is meant to do.
Play some really good very loud music and have a party why you shave your ice. That'll solve that
That's the concept of the snoopie one I had as a kid.
Except mine was hand crank.
😄
Great review! Also, as a Utah native, I approve of your hat choice :)
I wouldn't buy additional molds for ice. Seems like any round container with the right diameter would work fine. Maybe even give you a taller block.
Yeah, the plastic containers for cottage cheese works perfectly.
When I was a kid we had an ice shaver that used a hand crank with a colorful decal that spun as you cranked it. I've been thinking of buying one just for the nostalgia. A lot quieter, too.
When I was a kid, like early 80"s....I had a Snoopy Shaved Ice Maker....it came with some paper cone cups, I think like 3, 4 flavors (something like that). It was a lot of fun to have
Got one based on this review, my kids love it. They ask for one a few times a week.
My sister received this as a present and we couldn’t get nice fluffy shaved it, it was always crunchy. Even after adjusting the razor blade. You can even hear the crunch in this video when he is eating the shaved ice
If your ever in Houston, try Juicebox in Chinatown! Shaved Ice with fresh fruit of your choice/condensed milk and a scoop of blue bell ice cream to top it off!
Finally something I've used.
Yeah, it's loud. The only time I ever wanted one was like 3am and thank goodness no one sleeps in my house lol.
I filled my molds up to tip top, I wish they were deeper and so could shave more.
Its 109 here Im Minnesota. You nailed the timing!
Hmmm... When you eat it it sounds more crunchy like snow cone. The shaved ice usually just melts on the tongue.
Thumbnail got me good, love some shaved ice with cream on the top
Your videos actually make me miss Vegas lol I grew up in North Vegas and even seeing you backyard reminds me of my childhood homes
Reminds me,of the 38-1/2 years I lived in Phoenix😄😄😄😄
Geeze - finger goof - meant 48-1/2 years! I dint miss Phoenix at all!,,
look up taiwanese shaved ice, or the old school japanese style, put some fruits and red bean etc too. Canned fruits work great with shaved ice. I have also had good luck with juice concentrate if you don't want to drink "color"
i bought this one and the nut holding the steel plate let go and i had to oil all the gears up in the motor housing so it would still work
you can get crushed ice by using ice cubes and to get shaved ice you use the bowls of ice
mine lasted for about a year till it completely broke
i bought a magic bullet and it works way better to make slushies/milkshakes then this did when it worked
I miss having this as a kid, surprised they remade it as a new product. Might be a different company but still the same noise/enjoyment.
Proportion size issues, I would try to find a Tupperware with the same diameter but taller walls, then freeze a thicker puck.
What about mixing ind the flavor befor shaving or freezing for example cola or other soda ??
We have had that machine for several years. used it a lot at first, now it sits on the counter.
I have a hand crank machine and it makes me sooooo happy.
Your yard and view makes me always want to move to Nevada
Lol I know the feeling I live in Hawaii. When I go on vacation I need to go anywhere but here.
I want one that can make more at one time, for my grandkids and myself...😊
I got a Hawaiian shaved ice machine for free about 14 years ago. I freaking loved that thing. It disappeared years later, don't know what happened to it. I'm buying another one on Amazon. It just always bugged me that I lost it. 😂
FYI: Smart & Final carries shaved ice syrups, if you have trouble finding them.
This model has an adjustable blade that allows for finer or coarser ice textures. I’m wondering if a finer texture could be achieved with cubed ice by adjusting the blade a little?
As a resident of Hawaii my whole life, it isn’t “proper” to remove the D in shave’d ice lmao. Us locals here in Hawaii tend to me lazy with our pronunciations on a lot of things, and shave ice is just one of ‘em.
We’ve got the kool aid one, it’s pretty much identical to that (slightly different looking obviously) my kids love it
You can also buy cheap freezer containers of about the same size as the ones coming with the machine so you can have all the ice you want.. 😊
As someone who also lives in a "tourist town", New Orleans, I really understand your statement about "being a place to get away from".
😂👍
I've had that same one for nealy 7 years and it still works great.
back in the 60s when I was a kid here in Hawaii it was ice shave .
I did buy a manual one from opportunity shop for 50cents. Worked quite well but did take some effort. 😂 I really need to try with condensed milk!!!❤
Little Snowie is the best. We had this one and the containers broke from freezing. Little Snowie is like a professional machine but smaller for home.
This looks like something I'm gonna have to get (along with a KitchenAid stand mixer).
Just left Vegas. Seriously considering moving out there
Between the Utah Jazz hat, sliver of mountains and Hawaii shirt, I would guess you are on the 9th island!
LOL......Cute and Funny!! Go Boy!!
I like those shades.
Hearing him bite the ice and hearing it crunch immediately let me know this machine wasn't for me. The ice isn't fine and powdery enough. Great review!
Might be good for keeping the ball fro in check too
That looks a lot better than the icee machine.. great review. ( as always.) 😊😊😊❤❤
Ear plugs are required 😂
i have a ice maker my own it is great to use you have to spin the wheel.
You have to put lots of condensed milk in your shaved ice. We also add fruits, jelly’s, boba, etc to the mix.
Excited to be so early! Can you do a review of the newer ninja creami?
I han an icecube make one now got to try the icecream and condensed milk on top
God Bless Freakin Reviews
Leave the pucks out for 10 minutes for extra fluffy ice and press gently
I can't decide if I should keep the syrup in the fridge or not... It thickens when cold, so might not be the best to pour over ice...
I think you should be able to adjust the blades for fluffier snow...
I live where people vacation, makes me appreciate the vacations I get
Holy shit I didn’t know you were a fellow Vegas bro!
I'm from Baltimore, where the sno-ball was invented, and shaved iced is sacrilege.
Past n present tense is my guess. Like ‘I’m gonna go shave my face’- present tense, to ‘i shaved my face’ - past tense. So it would make sense since the ice is served already shaved, to be shaved ice. 🍻
If you fill those little containers with some beef broth or chicken broth in a little bit of water and freeze them and then put them in the machine for your four-legged friend you would get a big kiss afterwards. We go to the snow cone place and I just get playing ones with no flavoring and my three love it. Especially in this hot weather. I don't have them quite convinced yet that it's better than Starbucks puppuccino.
Hmm yellow snow eh?? Lol
That actually looks like a decent product. Thanks for the video.
