    But hey, look at the bright side. If Phil went to Berkeley, Wes went to UCLA, and Ted went to UCSD, we wouldn't be here watching this video today. There wouldn't be Strangers, Again. There wouldn't be Away We Happened. There wouldn't be When It Counts. The list goes on.. But most importantly, there wouldn't be Wong Fu Productions. Everything in life happens for a reason, guys. :)

    I almost got in at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but I was born in 1994 that's why I didn't get my Hogwarts Letter as Voldemort's ministry destroyed all muggle-born records during that time.

    I'm so glad that Ashley was a transfer student because not many people consider community colleges. It is a real bummer that people look down upon the community college system, even though the benefits are MAJOR! When you are at the age of 17/18 it really is hard to figure out what you want to do with life and it's hard to even know who you really are, and attending a CC really allows you to explore those things.
    I attend a CC and as of now, it's the best decision I've made in my life. So I hope students start to understand that the only option isn't to attend 4 year university and that 2 year is a great option to consider as well. Whew sorry! It's just when I was in high school, everyone, including teachers, seemed to look down on the idea of attending a community college, when it really shouldn't be that way. Education is all the same, it's just how you take it in and apply yourself. Make the best of it because being educated is a privilege, not everyone is given that opportunity.

    • @ceekayiish
      @ceekayiish 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +PockyFTW They really shouldn't say those things as an educator because they should be rooting for anyone who wants to further their education. I'm sorry you had to experience that, but the cc system gives students an experience that you really can't get anywhere else, which is really special.

    it's amazing how these guys got rejected from their top choice of college and yet they are making amazing skits and creative videos. this proves that where you go for school does not determine who you become. I'm starting to believe that some things in life happen for a reason, for example, if Wes didn't get rejected from the college he really wanted to go to, he wouldn't have met Phil and Wong Fu would have never happened. I'm a Freshmen transfer and it's been tough; I hope everything works out. *crosses fingers*

  • @anancybrown

    I started with community college and I am SO glad I did! So much less stress and pressure as I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Most of my professors were excellent and I got to get my breadth requirements done way cheaper and got to explore classes that I didn't necessarily need because the price was right. After I got my associates degree I worked for a few years and learned a lot about myself and what I actually want and then decided to go back to school and now I'm at UCR. I'm one of the older students here (I'm a 25-year-old Junior lol), which sometimes is embarrassing, but when I look back, I'm so glad I didn't start out here when I was younger because I am in a much better place mentally and emotionally now than I was back then. Also, since I'm older, I get more federal aid, so my loans when I am finished won't be near as high... I feel so lucky to be on the path that I'm on because it is the one that is just right for me. Don't be ashamed of your journey, no matter how different it looks from the journeys of those around you! Life happens differently for each of us; we all have a different story and that is one of the things that makes humanity awesome :)

    I just want to talk about my experience.
    I got accepted into all the schools I applied to but I'm dirt poor and the scholarships weren't enough. Everyone belittles Community College students but as for me that was my only option so I threw away my pride and attended CC. Don't worry too much about applications and not getting into your #1 school. I'm sure that if you stay motivated you'll eventually find a place where you're happy at. Like they say "everything happens for a reason". Be grateful that you can even get higher education. And yes transfer students have it easier because there's less competition! XD so yay for us!!!

      +Miguel 桐嶋 (Miggy) I'm debating on whether or not to attend community college this year, because I didn't get to apply for my ideal college(SJSU) in the first place because my parents couldn't afford me going there for four years due to room/board costs. I got accepted to a local university that I can commute to and save a lot of money but I want to go away for college. I believe community college could be my second chance into getting into the school I've wanted, but the whole transfer process confuses me. If you can help me out thank you! :D

    • @lagoon710
      @lagoon710 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Alex Kwong Ayyy, I could've applied for SJSU as well but financial issues got the best of me. To be fair, I'm attending a community college that's just minutes away from SJSU, and transferring from a CC to a state or UC is the better way to go. Community colleges allows you to take the prerequisites classes of your major and your GE classes as well. Depending on the CC you go to, you need to have a certain amount of units in order to make an appointment with a counselor and apply for transfer. Honestly, CC is better in my honest opinion, especially when you don't have the money to go straight off the bat into a state school. Like think about it, your first 2 years, you'll be mainly focused on taking GE classes like that of high school. I'm currently paying $48 for 7 classes at a CC to finish up before I transfer. Some people at say SJSU are taking the same class as I am and is paying $5000 per semester. You'll save so much money within your first 2 or 3 years at CC's before you transfer to SJSU that you don't gotta worry bout expenses man. Like Miguel said, everybody belittles CC students, but looking at the better picture, we're practically paying for the same classes for the first 2 years, except CC students gets it for cheaper. Hope my experience helps you make a choice and good luck to you! :P

    I plan to go to community college this fall (need to stop procrastinating and actually apply though) and then transfer. The biggest reason is because I don't know what I want to do and also want to save money. I started regretting by decision a bit when I could sense that my family members were judging me or disappointed with me since I have really good grades and I'm ranked 6th in my senior class. What Ashley said reminded me that it's okay and the reason why I chose this path. It made me feel much better. Thank you.

      I didn't know what I wanted to do after high school. So I went to the little branch college in my town, and I took a wide variety of classes. I found out what I wanted to do, and now I'm graduating this May with my bachelors degree in Sign Language Interpreting (I was a transfer student)! Honestly, if I hadn't stayed home for my first few years, I don't know if I would be on this path. Figure out what you want to do before you make any big leaps.

      +Lily Community College isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It's cheaper than going to a 4 year university where you'll just be in debt. Just do what you want now that you're an adult, you still have lots of time to decide what you wanna do.

    • @pleasewatchexo-kokobop2921
      @pleasewatchexo-kokobop2921 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lily i got into several colleges in my state, but got rejected by my first choice and half rejected by my second. my second choice had a program that required me to take half my classes at community college and half at the university and fully transfer in within 2 years if i maintained my grades. i was initially sad that i couldnt even get into my top 2. but i decided to take a risk and go with the program my second choice offered. at first, i was extremely ashamed. it was awkward talking to my friends who had full admission when i had to take cc classes to be part of the university. it felt weird, like i didnt belong. and my family was super disappointed. however, after my first semester, i learned that this was probably the best decision of my life. i got to save money, make better grades, and now im on track to make a 3.8 gpa in my first year! i looked at some of those who got full admission and saw how they took advantage of the fact they were full admits and lost their drive and dropped out. cc pushed me to try harder b/c i didnt know if i was going to make it to my goal. so in the end, what im tryint to say is that it honestly doesnt matter where you start. it's where u end that truly counts :)

    Dear Wong Fu, I got rejected from not just my top school, but legitimately all my dream schools. I wanted to die. I felt I had no place in this world, but my brother (BU alum) talked to me the same way you guys just did. College is at estimate to what you make of it. Name, pride, sports etc are somewhat important in everyone's decision, and it sucks not to go where you want. But ultimately, it's your life. I thank you guys for taking the time to talk about this issues because it shows me and the other millions of applicants to colleges that life is more than just what college name is on your bachelors degree ❤️

    chris, SAME. i was rejected from the 3 ivies i applied to (columbia/harvard/yale) which this year also had like the lowest acceptance rates lol. waitlisted to 2 schools, accepted to 2 major public state schools and Duke. i received a full ride to one of my state schools (with a lot of other perks too) so it's basically between that and the name-brand of Duke, but like y'all said, it's deff what you make of it, and i feel like i could do way more for myself and my future through the full ride program. i used to think that i would be looked down upon (especially by my local Asian community) for turning down Duke for it, but i think i've come to terms that their opinions don't matter and i know what's best for me, which is a program that will help me further develop my leadership and prepare me for a kickass grad school. thank you for this video!

    That college struggle is so real. In hindsight, I don't get why we put such a HUGE emphasis on making such a HUGE decision at that age. It's crazy. I'm almost 25, and I am just now thinking about going back to school for interior. Initially out of high school, I went to a school for photography, but I ended up leaving after a year, because frankly I was too depressed to successfully manage everything that was being thrown at me--a lot of weird things happened, and I honestly just couldn't handle it. Now that I'm 24, and I've been working my ass off for the past 4 and a half years living as an adult without a "real" education past high school, I think I might be ready though. And I think it's perfectly okay to admit that I was not even remotely prepared to tackle my whole future head-on as an 18 year old.

I was so upset because I had worked so hard and it felt like I could have used my time for other things and still go to the CUNY I'm going to. After watching this episode, I feel so much better because the advice at the end hit close to home. I really enjoyed this video! Cali HS student rn and all my life I've heard about the UC's and ivies and Stanford ofc. I thought that if I didn't go to a brand name school, I failed in a sense. You guys talked a lot about the things that I started to learned in the month of college admissions like how college does not determine your future, how you will find your place in the end(major wise too), and how college is not big as a deal as we currently make it in our 17-18 year old mind. I guess hearing you guys say it sort of reinforced the ideas in my mind. :)
    Lol btw. I commented for the topic of college since it was March and I was so happy when I saw this in my feed. Either u guys really do read the comments or it was just a stroke of luck. It was really nice timing for me, especially now that all the decisions r out and I'm deciding where I want to go.

    The reality and difficulties of the post-secondary school experience is understanding the concept of time. We are constantly forced with meeting deadlines and time is a variable that we cannot control. Trying to figure out what we want to do in the future, waiting for the acceptance to the school of our choice and wondering when we'll see the best of the given scenarios are all based on a matter of time needed to fulfill them. Thanks Wong Fu for reminding me why I push myself through each day and believing that the best is yet to come and when it does, it'll be great.

    Back to community college for a year, and now I'm at Columbia University for my final 2 years of undergrad. It's not how you get there, it's the fact that you have your goals, that you never give up and achieve them in the end; sometimes it just takes some time to find your direction

    I feel like I wasted 4 years in a University and got a degree with $20K in debt. Finally going to pay off the sum this year after 10 years of paying it off. Now working in a job that has nothing to do with my degree and even doesn't req a degree at all to do. Making peanuts. Oh yeah. That's pretty sad.
    But...on the bright side. I'm looking at my friend's friend. He went to a school for a BA, MA, and PHD. Now he has over $300K in school debt. He hasn't worked in 5 years and refused to work any job for less than $90K. Surprising no offers are contacting him. lol
    So, who made out the winner in life? lol

    I went out of state to a private university for an accelerated pharmacy program (had to apply during high school), got homesick and grades were suffering so I transferred home to a community college and now I'm at UCI 🤗 After experiencing all types of colleges I can say that education is what you make of it and not to focus on the branding of the school. Also don't be ashamed to do community college, it was a surprisingly positive experience for me. Just stay focus and keep on top of things. AND MY BIGGEST TIP take your first quarter/semester at a new school easy. Usually people take challenging classes their first time and are under prepared (and emotionally stressed). Oh and never put your dreams on hold because of a long distance relationship 👍

      +clairiemcberrie You can do it! Until you truly try your hardest, you never know!
      Word of advice, start as early as possible. Everything starting freshman year counts! And the essays should not be taken lightly... XD
      And even if you don't get into your top choice, you'll have plenty of options that are equally amazing. You might not realize it at first, but it's what you make of it! (similar to high school).
      Going to Yale in September!!!!
      (Got waitlisted/rejected to every other Ivy LOL)

      Bowli Polli Wow thanks so much for your kind words :) I wish you the best of luck in Yale! The thing I'm most worried about is how I am going to spend my sophomore and junior year summers :/

    • @isaiahb1628
      @isaiahb1628 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +clairiemcberrie take them chill, but I did a summer school program at Harvard my sophomore year, which is called Summer Secondary School or something. Super good for networking and it's perfect if your free June-beginning of August. You live directly on campus and are able to network with professors and actual students. They give Financial Aid which really made it possible for me, and if it's somewhere you want to go, it's a good way to scout out the school. Plus, it's simply a lot of fun!
      My junior year I didn't do much, but I went to a National Math Competition but that was only like 3 days (we had summer training though) (it sounds a lot more intense then it actually is) I didn't place high lol. Then I just chilled at home
      Basically during summer don't completely stop all activities, try to be involved in at least one thing that you're passionate about, or get a job. It's not meant to be intense or anything like you can totally chill and relax. Just don't slack ;) lol

      @isaiahb1628 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +clairiemcberrie if possible, try to start thinking of college essay stories for CommonApp and such Junior year August.

      +Sallie Tee over here we interchange college and university for the same level of school (4 year post high school)... from what I remember you guys in Australia have a bigger differentiation between college and uni where they are separate things

    • @Mr064582
      @Mr064582 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Panzer_Z Well the words college and university are often used interchangeably, but college can mean a couple different things. There are schools that call themselves "colleges" such as Dartmouth College and Boston College, but individuals schools of thought are also called "colleges" based on their academic categorizations. So a university/college like Emory University has nine divisions, among them Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Oxford College, School of Law, School of Medicine, etc.

    • @TriSinging
      @TriSinging 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in the US, university means a group of college or different schools under one name, so like here in UB, we have school of public health, and school of medicine, school of pharmacy and etc etc, some colleges cannot call them selves univeristy becasue they are just not accredited that way.

    My dream school is Stanford, but only because in my tiny tiny early college school, a lot of the alumini get accepted to there. I consider my school to be family and the stress to stay with them really gets to you. For all those students out there, I advise you to take community college classes during high school; it really increases you GPA and portfolio. I got all A's in my core classes and with my college classes, my GPA is now a 4.55 as a freshmen.

    So in my year, we had the first ever HKDSE (which is a Hong Kong's version of a nation wide exam or SAT) and I basically failed but somehow managed to pass. After getting our results, I went with my friends to multiple schools that has walk-in admissions, went for interviews. When I got home, I knew that I'm not gonna be chosen in those schools. Long story short - I was grateful that my sister knew about non-local universities and the last school that I checked out offered me to join their vocational course that would guarantee my application for bachelors - and so I did.
    I'm gonna graduate in a few months with Bsc in Psychology :)
    Also, after applying to UIU-HK campus, when we got home, the weather was so bad that it was the worst one that happened in a while. Grateful and lucky :D

    Taking a gap year has it's benefits too! I graduated high school class of 2015, 4.0, valedictorian, lots of extracirrics, the works. However, I was incredibly burnt out by the end of senior year. I was forced to take a gap year haha because I didn't get into any of the colleges I applied to, even my back-up. But it's allowed me to recharge, refocus, and rediscover the drive that pushed me towards the straight-A track in the first place. Gap years have a bit of a negative stigma to them, but I think that as long as you have a plan to occupy yourself during that time, rather than laze away on the couch every day, then I think they really set you up for the next four years of college.
    P.S. University of Rochester for me next year! :)

    Phil you are so real and personal! I love how you shared your story of taking a drive. I can feel the "genuineness" in your words. I love how you said something "controversial" as advice. That's something I would do. And you are endearingly honest and analytical. While it may seem like you're risking hurting Wes' feelings by discussing the possible thinking process behind his school decisions, I think it shows how much you just want to break things down for people to understand. And this is something I can really connect with. Wes, I hope you didn't take offence at Phil's analysis. But I'm sure you know him well enough to understand. And you are so right. Make the best of where you go, even if it wasn't your first choice. Learning opportunities are everywhere, as long as you can see them! Chris, I'm sure you've heard this before. You are not your parents! Just because they gave birth to you, doesn't mean you have to do or follow as they say/do. Go with your heart. Stick out and be different, as long as you are happy with your decisions. Take up space and don't feel unnecessary. You are here, and you deserve to go where you wanna go, damnit! I'm sure you already know this, but sometimes, you just gotta hear it one more time! Ashley, I wish you talked more about your school experience! I know nuts about being a transfer student, but maybe you felt different and the need to fit in? I'm just assuming of course, so I may be wrong. Whatever it is, anywhere you go, you learn, so I'm sure you did! Love listening to you guys, and now your lunch choices have further driven my decision to eat burgers today!! I better get a good beef patty in mine!! (Haha I'm sorry I splurged most of my comment money on Phil. But I really do like him! As they say, birds of a feather flock together. But don't worry guys, I love you all too. Share the love, y'all!! *hugs* Sorry, I'm a bit out of it because I'm on my period. Don't judge periods, okay?)
