  • Ayya Khema (born Ilse Kussel - 1923-1997) was the first Western woman to become a Theravadin Buddhist nun. She has served as a model and inspiration for women from all the Buddhist traditions who have sought to revive the practice of women's monasticism in modern times as well as founding women's Buddhist organisations. Her renown as a teacher is widespread.
    Born in Berlin of Jewish parents, Ayya Khema escaped Nazi Germany in 1938 with a transport of 200 children to Glasgow. She joined her parents two years later in Shanghai, where, with the outbreak of war, the family was put into a Japanese POW camp, in which her father died.
    Ayya Khema is noted for providing opportunities for women to practice Buddhism, founding several centers around the world. In 1987, she helped coordinate the first-ever Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women. She has written numerous books in English and German, including Being Nobody, Going Nowhere and When the Iron Eagle Flies.

    A complete dharma lesson in 4 sentences..."It is often thought that the Buddha's doctrine teaches us that suffering will disappear if one has meditated long enough or if one sees everything differently. It is not that at all. Suffering isn't going to go away. The one who suffers is going to go away."

      @cuttingthrough4718 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would like to add that if there is no sufferer, then by definition there is no self in conflict with what is, and so suffering must come to an end.

    Oh, I love Ayya Khema!
    She's got this glow across time and miles...with such an extraordinary life.
    Doesn't this just rock.
    🙏 ✨ 🕊️
    Paz y luz, y'all.

      Absolutely! She was fierce, wonderful, and clear and cut through delusions with a sharp knife of reason yet with a heart of compassion. She saw the cruelty and stupidity of man first hand as a young Jewish woman escaping the Nazis. This would have propelled her desire to realize liberation and to help others.

    I am a Pure Land Practitioner, and I find so much value from Theravada masters and philosophy. A Theravada monk often visits the temple and I gain so much from his teachings and your videos as well. I appreciate you for reaching beyond Buddhism in your other videos as well.
    I just say this to say a special thank you, and hope my words can bring us all closer together. There seems to be a stigma that Buddhism is splintered and we do not respect other schools. When you actually practice and join a Buddhist community, you find the exact opposite to be true.
    I offer you my complete respect and reverence. I take refuge in the sacred Sangha.

    After only the first minute listening once more I am full of gratitude for the deep openings your invaluable work has enabled.
    No matter which school or teaching, since you transmit it from your very essence, no matter the words, that is where it always ends up falling back into.
