Thanks. last year my hard drive stopped working so I needed to replace it (that was my first time removing things from my pc). It was a completely disaster, I could not do it. Today (1 year later) I tried again and I did it, but I messed up some wires. I think Dell did a disaster structure for this computer. Now I have a Toshiba Satellite and a I love it because is so Easy take apart the hard drive.
regazz, you are very skilled. Thanks for making a video that is not full of bullcrap. I am fixing a friends laptop and this disassembly is exactly what I needed to do a good job.
Someone just donated this model of laptop to an orphanage where i help with maintaining their notebooks in my free time. The hdd has failed. It's a nightmare to replace the hdd! one of the most frequently replaced items other than RAM. One of the worst designed notebook where everything has to be taken apart to access the HDD! I told the orphanage director to forget about using this notebook! I ain't got the time to remove and put everything back without damaging any screw or cable mounts! But I am keen to replace it some day, as the CPU supports 64-bit and capable of running modern windows 10 and other 64-bit linux os.
Thanks for the video. I broke a little piece of plastic becuase I wasn't paying attention to one of the screws that were left inside. But operation has completed successfully.
One thing I do to keep track of where the screws belong is I draw little squares on a blank sheet of paper. As I take the screws out I label the square based on screw origin and place the screws in the squares. This way when I put things back together I can put all the screws back where they came from.
Hi, I have 2 of these laptops. They're great, except for the very cheap plastic that breaks easily. Replacing/Upgrading the HDD is a nightmare (if you decide to do so). 🙄😶 The maximum CPU that you can put into this laptop is an Intel T9300. I'm currently running a T8300 in one machine & a T7500 in another. 😎 Maximum RAM is 2x 2 GB DDR2 800 MHz. 4 GB in total ergo.
Hi! Thanks for this video it helped me take apart my DELL A860. My problem started a year ago when its display went black. Laptop was working properly I took a lamp and lightened the display only so I could use the Laptop.I took the plastic cover of the display off and there is a little white duse (at 04.04 minutes see in your video) and I was lasy turning off the Lpt and under curent I touched the white duse with a tiny screwdriver.I short circuited only 2 hair tiny wires. Can't be turned on.
Thank you for this awesome demonstration. I had a question hopefully you can answer. My laptop wont turn on. At first thought it was adapter but then it turns out it was actually the battery. I got a replacement battery now but even then the laptop wont turn on even though the blue light comes on indicating its charging. If I push the power button it makes the noise that its starting up and number lock and the 3rd lock light up but the caps lock just blinks. about 7 seconds later just stops. any suggestions or clues as to what might be going on?

Hi, it is only that way. And this is very sad, because you need to remove a motherboard out from bottom case for it. The only thing I would suggest is to maybe find a KIT that allow you to remove DVD and install it to instead of DVD. And probably in a bios turn off your main hard drive and it will just sit there ... (just figure out that idea :)) I am not sure if it will workout well...
from 6:53 to 6:57 you uplug and remove a cable. What is that part? I've watched 4 A860 take apart videos and two have the cable and two don't have it. Mine doesn't seem too. Thanks
My Dell Vostro A840 not working. I want to transfer data from hard drive (Dell Vostro A840) to another computer. I have removed hard disk from laptop. Please suggest which SATA converter should I use for it?
You may improve it with C2D T9900. But I this decision will be completely yours! :) When you will decide to change CPU, don't forget to buy cooling paste, maybe watch somewhere a video about how to apply it, etc Memory 4gb (2x2) DDR2 PC-6400 Have a good luck!
You know, sometimes even a little discharge will damage it. I am not sure about some fuses there. Sorry, at this point I am helpless. Hope, finally, you will fix everything
I have acquired one of these laptops, I was considering upgrading it with extra ram and an SSD, but now I see where the HD is located I don't think I'll bother, what a nightmare!
Northman thank you. At 8.43 when I am unscrewing a HDD Caddy. On the upper left corner of the board you will see something blue. That's a CMOS battery. It can be unplugged and plugged back. Have a nice day!
I have exactly this laptop, is there a way of getting to the hard disk without pulling it totally apart? was seriously considering swapping its hard disk with an SSD.
Hi, Unfortunatelly I don't know if the motherboard is shorted that is what I would like to find out somehow:(. The laptop can not be turned on after having touched that damned little white duse. I was hoping you say that there is a fuse or something alike somewhere on the motherboard which can be replaced by such kind of shortings. I can not fancy how could two such a hair tiny wires do any harm on the motherboard. I did not sense a smoke just a secondly tsiss" Any Idea is welcomed Thanks :)
also, the screen just went black of a suddon and is unusable. It wasn't hit by anything hard my dad was just using it briefly on his desk and it just went! any reasons why that might have happened?
Hey there, I tried replacing the screen to my dell vostro a860 but the screen will slowly fade in when turned on and stops working after 1 or 2 minutes. Any suggestions?
pls help me i have problem with my vostro a860 no speaker sound when played music, but if i used headset i heard the sound....i check my sound drivers the components work properly in i also installed conexant audio driver in dell website...please help me with my problem...
woud i be able to use a ssd as a bootdrive on this laptop? Is it compatable? I went on the crucial wesite and one of the recommended upgrades was an ssd. They were also saying that the laptop is a guaranteed compatable too!
regazzz I was just checking your video to confirm my fear and it showed one of the worst locations for the HDD I have ever seen. It is insane that they design laptops with the HDD buried so deep that you literally have to deconstruct the entire laptop to fix/replace. Well... I better get started with wasting 30-45 minutes of my life.
Can anyone please tell me what should I check out on my DELL A860's motherboard to resolve the under mentioned short circuit problem? I have the Laptop taken apart.
The same thing you would see if you were to see it on the laptop screen. (same guy you replied to, just a different account cos something went wrong with that account that I i first commented on)
...und dann sagte ich zum Kunden (ohne das Gerät vorher gesehen zu haben): HDD gegen SSD tauschen? Max. 20 Min. Schlimmere Strafe geht kaum ;-).
i have this laptop about 16 years! thanks !

Glad to know this is as big a pain for someone else as it is for me! Thank you for the video, it was very helpful.

Thanks for the video! Dab why did they make it so complicated like this! To dig for the hard desk it looks like digging for oil!
Thanks for the upload Regazzz, what a crappy place to put a damn harddrive x-(

Is fan working? Did you changed cooling compound? Are you sure everything is connected?
Did you shorted your motherboard. If so, you may buy another one to change.
after you installed audio driver it stopped working?

You are welcome!

Great video - a lot of screws and parts.
However, could you please tell me where the CMOS battery is located, and maybe the easiest way to replace it.
Northman thank you. At 8.43 when I am unscrewing a HDD Caddy. On the upper left corner of the board you will see something blue. That's a CMOS battery. It can be unplugged and plugged back.

Alonso Hernandez Porras it's ridiculous, but there is no other way. They placed this HDD under motherboard...
