My favorite tip for taking notes you'll remember later: don't be afraid of making your notes funny! Write little jokes in you notes that will help you remember, draw funny stick figures for each king in your history notes. There's no shame in adding a little informal humor to your class notes, as long as they help you remember.

I love to do that for a while, ... until my teacher scolded me and ripped my notebook. Said that I didn't pay attention and that I'm not serious, although my notes are more complete than others. My school is really strict about stupid things, but tend to forget the more serious issues with their students.

【 zenp0id 】 My school is like that too. They make you take your coat off even when it's -2C outside but someone's else's house gets violated by people from my school and they do nothing about it.

The only AP class offered at my junior high is Geography and your videos have really help me do well in this class. It is the most vague class I've ever taken, in the sense that my teacher literally tells us to take notes on the entire chapter and never really elaborates on anything we read. So thank you so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate all that you do.

My main notetaking technique is based off of the MLA speech outline conventions. My freshmen year I took a class called 'Advanced Language Arts, Research, and Presentation' (a mouthful I know), and use of the MLA speech outline was required, so I became very familiar with it. I don't use the exact conventions from the MLA format in my notes, but I use the idea of separating information by concept, and ordering information from broadest to most specific. If you're looking to make your notes clearer and easier to review later, I would check out the format and see how you could adapt it.

This is my second semester doing this method but it's worked so far - I have a 5x7 five subject, Five Star notebook. I use on section to make notes of my readings and another section to write notes during lecture.
After the readings and lecture, I re-read my notes and create a study guide and have these in my Five Star Flex.
I found that this method helps me a lot when studying for midterms and exams because I don't have to re-read chapters or go back to slides. I take in and remember a lot more from the lecture so all I really do is review the study guide.

  • @taranicoleg

I ALWAYS use the textbook headings when I take notes from a textbook, it makes outlining so much easier! I also think it's super important to paraphrase--like if I were answering those questions I would make my answers in bullet points so that it's easier to come back to later. IMO it's easier to review if you don't have to read a long paragraph of a response! And I definitely agree to switch it up depending on the class, each class is different! And if there's a class where you take notes from the book and then go over them directly then it's helpful to just add to the notes and highlight what's similar btwn the 2 and what the teacher says, this especially has applied for me in my English classes when we had to take notes over author bios or introductions to each time period (or if you're reading a book in English, color code your annotations btwn your thoughts and what the teacher says is important)

I don't think this can be considered as taking notes but what I do is I would pull out my books and go through them, skim and scan, highlight the important things and by the end of the page, I would write (summarize) everything from the page on the margin of the pages of the books. You can even add a bookmark if you have any questions. This takes less time, much more organize and easy to work with.
This method works for those who are taking hard subjects such as biology and so on.

Watching your videos is extremely interesting, because it shows foreigners like me how school works in the U.S. For example, I noticed that you have lots of tips for remembering definitions - learning definitions is really rare in my country (so I can't take advantage of those wonderful tips, boo :( ). Also, for some reason I don't think mind mapping would be useful here either, but I can't put my finger on it. Really interesting! :)

thank you so much for this awesome video!! when I'm revising vocab, I either use flashcards (for those words I really can't remember after 2 or even 3 times) or I write down all the words of one particular unit in my spiral notebook in the foreign language, then I try to remember them at the first time after skimming them quickly and translate into my mother tongue. Each word I didn't have right will be written down again => less words, soon there won't be any vocab left! :)

I'm in English class right now, listening to your video for yhe third time while i check the comments to find what other methods people use. But thank you so much! I suck at taking notes and this really helps. I hope you haven't lost motivation seven years later, you seem like a very motivated person ❤

My shoulder gets inflamed when I take a lot of handwritten notes (car accident made my joints really weak) so I tend to type my notes. I'd print them out so during lecture, I could add additional notes to a particular section if needed. I think it save SOOOO much time and I spend more time studying than trying to make my notes legible. I don't have sloppy handwriting but for those who struggle with making your note neat, I think this method could help!

I've tried to film a video for class once, where I needed a notes-video set up. It would be very useful if u had a shelf over your desk, that way you can balance things until u get ur camera in the right place (in my case, I balanced a scissor using a heavy object, opened the scissor and put my phone between the two handles xD so it was right over the notes I had). Until you can find a proper way of doing it, I suggest to just be creative about it 😁 use what u have until your camera is where u want it to be :) and good luck!
