  • Gabriel Swift is an Adventurer and a film maker, It also so happens he has a dope ass van. His vintage 1978 volkswagen westfalia is a classic, and even at first glance you can tell it has travel in its blood. Gabriel has kept the van pretty stock, having been fascinated by these types of vans from a young age the need to keep it original is present in his mind. He has big plans for it with dreams of Alaska and South America, but for now it roams the streets of Victoria, BC, Canada, and a trip to california in the near future.

    You might consider adding a BlazeCut fire suppression system. Mounts with zip ties above the engine - if you get an engine fire (change your fuel lines every 5 years) it is under pressure and the hose pops and extinguishes the fire in less than one second. I have a 79 Campmobile. Love yours!

    I had a 1972 Worlds fair a edition. Same color as this one. Gave it away 10 years ago. Big mistake. You never know which way your life will turn. It was so fun. Yeah, everyone waves especially other VWs. So fun

    The fuel gauges in these old busses are notoriously unreliable. I have a 71 Bay and it's the same. "Full" shows about 3/4 but as a rule when mine shows empty I just fuel up anyway. That being said, I also keep a jerry can in the bus!

    Excellent Safety Briefing regarding Fuel Lines (2) and corrective/immediate action. Dude, you Must let the Wet Suit dry completely before storing and or stowing. May want to hose it down especially following salt water or even pool/chemical exposure. Great Video!

      Thanks man! yeah I usually do, and every couple weeks I give it a light scrub with some sunlight soap and let it air dry seems to do the trick.

      They are definitely reliable if properly looked after. If you're referring to the fuel lines comment, the introduction of fuels that contain ethanol has been shown to corrode or deteriorate these old fuel lines. This has caused a lot of barbecued buses in recent years. In Europe this is a problem especially as the EU has allowed fuel to contain even more ethanol than previously.

    2 questions:
    1 - can you replace the fuel lines w/ steel braided or the like?
    2 - why carry around an empty extinguisher?
    a - why is it empty?

    • @GabrielSwift
      @GabrielSwift 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Yes, you can indeed and probably should (some of mine are steel braided but haven't gotten around to doing them al.
      2. I'm really lazy... but it is no longer empty so were safe now! (I had to use it on a small fire)

    Beautiful van but I’d imagine you’d have to spend a fortune on gas

    • @Differentmedia
      @Differentmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      not to sure but these vans are small 4 cylinder engines, so the gas consumption would be much lower than most other vans.

      Forrest Stevens ha no. VW Type 2s average 14-18 mpg. Camper models, especially those by Westfalia with poptops, are at the lowest part of that range. My MUCH larger Ford ExtendedBody Econoline with Sportsmobile poptop gets 17-20.

    You see VWs everywhere in Europe. I think it's harder to maintain because of that and its quirks, overall a classic. Wish I could have known what made him choose to film and travel in a van compared to other modes of travel and if it has changed him in any way in terms of inner growth. Thanks :) nice interview.

    • @GabrielSwift
      @GabrielSwift 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! I originally chose a van because I loved the overloading lifestyle and it seemed to be fairly practical especially with film equipment etc. As well the price of vans is usually pretty low which is nice! I've always sort of been in love with the idea of being able to have a mobile living space. In terms of inner growth it definitely teaches you how to be flexible and shows you that you don't need a lot of 'stuff' in order to be happy. I think vans are a great way to travel but I am also very keen on boat travel as well and am hoping that is the next adventure!
