    Bannister a news announcer promoted way above his ability.
    Last time I heard him he was fronting an obituary programme on Radio 4.

    0:35 - Well now as of July 2022, it has been announced that Steve Wright is leaving Radio 2. He will remain with the BBC for other work, but it is seen by some as another axing of the old guard, just now at Radio 2.

    And R1 never recovered! Poor Steve Wright finally kicked out from the BBC despite huge audiences - did this have something to do with his sudden death ??????

    Bannister says he thought the BBC should support people who are "inventive, surreal and different". You mean untalented right? Like yourself. That is what you are trying to say isn't it?

    In 2022, BBC is now overtaken by the commercial counterparts for quality. Capital is better than Radio 1. Heart Radio and Greatest Hits Radio is far better than Radio 2. Classic FM and Scala are miles better and more welcoming than Radio 3.

    The axings seemed whimsically unjust at the time - but if you factor in what Bannister probably knew and what the British public didn't - that Radio 1 was then and in the past, rife with political ominity and sexual transgressions, the sackings/changes make sense. (Bates would be a politically constructed dismissal)

    • @GROMIT9
      @GROMIT9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And when he worked what Bannister was about to do he got in first and did in the press what DLT had done on air!. And all these axings ended up pointless anyway as all it did was lead to the Chris Evans fiasco in 1997 when he quit because they refused his request to go down to 4 days a week!)

    Danny Baker was far better than the people he replaced.

    • @RetroCool73
      @RetroCool73 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +tomstickland I'd say he was just different - Bannister replacing a greying 48 year old with a balding 36 year old was hardly courting "youth" - he was trying to recreate GLR. Danny is certainly one of the few people left in the media who is honest and getting dragged into the black propaganda of 'Bannisterisation' wasn't fair on him either. Furthermore, the quote here that "listeners tuned in expecting DLT and heard Danny Baker" is an example of that propaganda - Dave resigned mid-August, Danny took over his old slot the last week in October. DLT fans would have had to have spent 10 weeks on the moon to have tuned in expecting to hear Give Us A Break.

    • @_PatDog
      @_PatDog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like Danny Baker but he's was not suited to youth type radio but at least he does not have the whiff of nonce about him unlike the Smashie and Nicey's.

    Totally Danny is still one of the best broadcasters around and maybe not for Radio One tastes. You get the feeling Bannister only put him on to get up DLT's nose. Which is fair enough.
