- When Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad ELS 503 (SD40-2) stopped at this crossing I wasn't sure what was happening, but then 45 minutes later a MOW truck pulls up.. Now what's going on? Turns out it was something I filmed, except this wasn't the crossing where it was..

They stopped for a broken rail. Maintenance had to come out and assess if it could be traversed, and if so, at what speed. He cleared it for walking speed and had to observe the break as it was traversed. I hope that helped.
If there were no horns in 1985 I would have been dead. It was 5 am and I was heading home after a babysitting job so I was very sleepy. The train honked and that was the first time I was aware there was a train. I would have drove onto the tracks and died. I’m thankful for the horns!
@@mimiohnine When I was still working as an Engineer, in the no horn areas there must be lights and gates. If someone appears to NOT be stopping we can blow the horn. But the bell is still suppose to be ringing while approaching a road crossing. All other public crossing we must give at least a 20 second warning with both the horn and the bell, plus the headlights on bright.
@@mimiohnine sounds like one of those back roads with railroad tracks winding through the woods and all of a sudden you're crossing tracks..... I grew up in the woods and know a lot about crossing random tracks on heavily forested or overgrown property along the roads in railroad tracks. Someone unfamiliar will never recognize railroad tracks until they've crossed it.
Here, in Texas we have come horns. Just mess with the bull, and you can get them.
When I lived in Black River, Michigan the LSRC used to park outside our house and shutdown/ idle for a few hours so one day we caught the driver at just the right moment and myself and my two oldest children got to talk to the driver and he allowed us to see the inside of his cab plus he let the kids blow the horn a couple of times. Best time they had that week!
My earliest memory is of a train that passed by my window every night. I remember pulling up in my crib to watch. It always blew it's whistle as it passed. Almost 70 years later it still is the most beautiful sound to me and I’ve always loved trains.
I once asked mom if it was a memory or a dream. She was shocked. She said we lived in NC temporarily when I was a baby and the train did indeed come right by the window by my crib.🤗

I have never lived anywhere where I haven't heard the train whistle. It has always been so soothing to me. One of my favorite sounds.

Me too. When I was a lad I took great comfort listening to the train whistles late at night. I knew I wasn't the only one awake in the forbidden hours!
I still love hearing now as an old timer.
My son is a railroad engineer in the Detroit area, my opinion of trains changed 24 years ago when he started at the railroad. He loves his job and fortunately has never derailed or hit a car.

We have a NO HORN zone but with crossing arms and overpasses. It’s supposed to cut down on the noise going through town. I’m probably in the minority, but I like train horns.
Just happened on your video. Growing up in Crawford County Kansas a small town, watching trains pass by was big time for us kids (I’m in my 80’s). Enjoyed waiting with you just for the ride. Yeah, respectfully saying you do appear to hit the pedal moving on snow roads but you’re the one driving. Thanks for the memories was still fun. Oh us kids always waved at the trains. 😃👍 Be safe friendly!
I worked on a CATV crew pulling aerial cable along a RR track through the swamp outside N.O.
1st day out they put my crew on a high railer which is a 1 ton flatbed truck that has extra steel wheels that allow it to drive on the tracks. We were doing about 60 mph and huddled against the truck and I looked through the back window of the truck and the driver was reading a newspaper. When the trains would come by the workers would throw bottles of water at us while we were safetied off to the telephone poles. You made sure to catch that water after you got hit with 1 or 2 bottles.
When the biggest baddest wildebeest comes down to the watering hole, the other animals watch out for it. Same deal.
This is not the fault of the trains on the tracks, "NO Horn Zone"? That's just stupid! No RR Crossing guards, lights warnings, there is no common sense or safety here!
Trains are big. don't you see them?

I live on the outskirts of a town that has trains going through it, a big town, which can get bottle necked in some areas due to trains and it’s a major route for both freight and passenger trains. We now have three overpasses. It’s 3:45 a.m. and I’m a few miles away from the tracks that go through half the town and I can hear a train now, constantly tooting its horn. The tracks go through 10 miles of residential area just in this town. Can you imagine how screwed up the sleep is for people who have to hear those horns all night right across the street? And there are crossing guards and lights for every single crossing. But still, two years ago, some woman decided she could beat the train driving between the gates. She got plowed. It is the fault of the drivers. I’ve lived in this town for over 25 years and that’s only the second case I know of. And this early in the morning there is no reason for the trains to blare their horns constantly, but they do. It should be a no horn zone with all the crossing lights and gates.
Well, common sense has been absent from America for decades now...! Common decency and education, too...!!! I really miss them...!!!
Along with the No Horn Order, there's probably a Slow Order in force as well for that downtown area.
My sister lives near the train tracks and the train blows horn to enter small city. After a few weeks she said she didn't notice them anymore!

From watching this video, it seems that safety is best served when civilians can work in harmony with the trains !!! Great video footage today !!!

I live in Iron Mountain. When I was a kid, I saw a car get stuck on the tracks right behind Pauly's during the winter and of course. There was a train coming. Some women that didn't know the area, I guess. Thought the tracks were a road because they were covered with snow, and you couldn't see them. Lucky for her, the cops were called, and they got a tow truck over there with plenty of time to spare. I stood around and watched the whole thing. As the tow truck drive was pulling away. He stuck his head out the window and said, "It would have been fun to watch but a hell of a mess to clean up. I laughed!!!
That is crazy. 😮 I grew up in a small town that trains ran through. We definitely heard the horns whether freight or passenger. Day and night.
I worked for a company based at the IMT Airport, but was a flight coordinator at their facility in Lansing.
I was asked to fill in for a few days, and jumped at the chance to go to the UP. The second day I had lunch with one of their pilots. He noticed me nervously looking at my watch and said, "This is the UP, relax"! 😉
Like I told you a while back, your more important to that railroad than a lot of the employees know. Your filming helps with track inspections, rail car inspections, crossing inspections. Locomotive videos help mechanics know when a problem is coming. You give them sights, sounds and a glance at the exhaust. Keep up the good work Jason its very much appreciated.
I grew up in Upstate NY. Dad had a service station, where I started wrenching, so I got so I could drive most things through most weather. Twenty years later, while showing off in Maryland, I learned that my skills were gone. Thankfully, the audience was small. Respect.
Will they ever learn that "old" and "well seasoned" dudes are worth listening to every once in a while????
I live close to a major train route. I'm above it so the train horns are very audible. I love the trains and the horns are no offense to me at all. I can even tell the difference in the way the engineer toots the horns . It's their signature. Nice video thanks for the content.
Like it or not, Railfans and/or Foamers ARE indeed watchdogs for the railroads they document and follow. Good job Jason for noticing that bad rail joint.
Yea they do periodic inspections!!! Right!!!! They are operating on a shoe string budget!!

I belong to Amtrak’s, NS, & BNSF (even though I don’t live anywhere near BNSF tracks, but occasionally will visit their tracks) groups. I have all three cards taped to my lower right front of my vehicle so anyone in authority can readily see them.
Reminds me of Amtrak pulling out of the station in Salem, Oregon. There are warning signs at the crossings.
Used to live near the Santa Fe tracks when I was a kid. We would run to the crossing, and wave at the engineer as well as the guy in the caboose. Those were the days.
And the Train always Wins.

When I was stationed in Northern Maine we used to say we had 3 seasons, July 4th, July 5th and winter.
Oregon used to be winter and August. It doesn't rain like it used to and gets hot sooner and stays longer these days.
Wisconsin has two seasons, winter and construction!

we live by some train tracks. One day the train was blowing its horn so long and so loud I went to my door and asked myself what was going on with them. He kept blowing it shorts burst long bursts. It got my attention. A few hours later my husband returns home and discovered someone had broken into his big shop from the backside, where I could not see from my door. They broke through the metal wall by removing some screws and bending the metal aside and tearing through the insulation.
A couple years later someone got in and stole his Dodge truck. and lots other stuff. They hit every house out here. They accidently dropped their cell phone in my car when they were going through it. I gave it to the Sheriff. We got the truck back 3 weeks later, catalytic converter was gone. Weve been out here almost 50 years. Only in the last few years have we had any trouble. They were caught by a ring doorbell on a house across the street from where they stripped it. Dumb crooks.
That poor train driver's heart must be in his mouth, the whole way up that street. God bless him!
That is the insanest train line I’ve ever seen, i might have misunderstood the layout but it looks line the train line is on a road and then full of uncontrolled crossings…..in the middle of town!!!!!!!

This is some of the best, rock solid shooting of trains I've seen in a long time. Others could learn how to improve their camera techniques by watching this footage.

Your comments about driving so fast in the snow, oh so true! Born and raised north of the 49 and winter driving in snow is all I know. I learned to drive in it, standard, automatic, rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, four-wheel drive! All of those drivers that are new to it, move aside! 🍁 CN/CP
When we was kids, we would hang around the rail yard. One day the engineer gave us a raid across town. We loved it.
Nice that the crossings still have incandescent lights and real bells.

Amazing all the SD-40's, SD-60's and even some GP units are still operational on many of the smaller lines. Brings back so many fond train memories when I was a kid and those units were the latest motive power.

I randomly caught your video and I loved it. I grew up in Iowa, out in the country and not far from the tracks. This brought back a lot of good memories. I have always loved trains.

My wife showed me this yesterday, stupidly amazing. Poor guys. I've got a friend who works for BNSF on the trains, and he said there are some places on their runs that are like this too. So far he hasn't been run into. If they have to go that slow, why not have a flagger walking ahead of the train to stop traffic? IDK
To get home, I had to cross tracks that had no warning signs. Just the crossed RR sign. I never saw a train there. I got off from work one night, and if my headlights hadn't seen something shiny, I would have hit the train. The road and the cars were pitch black and no moon. 😮

@MarkH10 Yes, I could have said flashing signs with crossing arms, but having my body endure chemo, which turns everything inside you black to kill out cancer, my brain never was sharp again. I used to love to read, but even that is different. Some rural areas only have the signs with the RR cross nothing else. I had to read this 8 times to make sure I didn't get ahead of myself.😶🌫️

Take a rules test and volunteer to flag crossings! Of course, it's hard to flag crossings properly and video, too.

Thx for the video! I grew up in the Bay Area Northern California & all railroad crossings have arms, flashing lights, bells & train horns. That looks like a disaster waiting to happen! Poor engineers, people driving cars are impatient & stupid!
I love snow, and l remember getting up early and sitting by the old wood cook stove !! This is in yr 70's and up. My parents were into antiques and it was that was an AMAZING ❤ part of my childhood !!

My grandfather ran an old Shay Steam Engine on Cass Mountain WV when it was a working logging operation. I love trains 🚂My father arranged for my sister and I to ride in the cab with the engineer (Cass Mountain train is a tourist attraction now). The engineer explained how there were no air brakes back when Grandfather was hauling up and down the mountain. I lived on the U.P. For awhile and went to Iron Mountain to see a dentist 🦷.
Savannah GA has a no horn policy, which was pretty much a stupid move to politicians.
I remember blowing through 2 or 3 ft snow drifts in my dads 77 Cutlass during the blizzard of 78.
Wow there were a couple in Springfield Mo took several lives with no crossing bars finally after living here almost 40 years they fixed it

Rich neighborhood here in Louisville Kentucky have passed legislation for no train horns allowed. But are the first ones to sue when some jackass gets killed when they cross in front of the train. It should be against the law
Are you referring to the Chamberlain Ln crossing? I'm in Louisville as well.
I'm a retired engineer and used to go through Anchorage Kentucky. We held our breath going through the no horn area .
Several areas in Louisville are no train horn. Shelby St all the way to Washburn is no horn. You blow for Lyndon Ln, Whipps Mill and UPS, then no horn through Anchorage.
It’s that way all the way down the lcl sub starting at Clifton at the Frankfort ave major crossing all damn near the other side of anchorage. Used to live in Clifton.

That engineer was acting out of an abundance of caution.
I'd hire him, and give him accolades for keeping my equipment and the public safe.
Your state of mind is called 'projection'. He was instructed to meet MOW and submit to instructions. Personally initiated caution did not occur.
I guess he remains unemployed then, and the public and equipment are less safe. He suffers along in life with few accolades.

Not "accidents". These incidents are 100% preventable. Car drivers need to feel the wrath of tickets, fines, and loss of licences.

It is so sad that most people don't know/care how long it takes for a train to stop even going 10 to 15 mph! Or care that blowing the horn is to remind vehicles/pedestrians that a train is coming and to wait until it passes! ALWAYS remember a train NEVER looses in crossing accidents; at worst ties!

I wouldn't call those incidents "accidents". Nothing accidental about getting hit by a train you decide to drive in front of. I'd call them "crashes"

When you're allowed to self inspect yourself. Where I live just in the small city there were 21 RR bridges that the city paid engineers to inspect and write repair proposals. The city turned it over to the Federal DOT ,Homeland ect and the RR is forced to repair them all. Some are 100+ year old iron and others are nearly as old concrete that haven't seen maintenance in several decades.
The tiny apartment where I'm at now is a hair over a quarter mile from the very busy railroad tracks so you hear trains all day and night. Where i was at before, at my mother's house, it was in the glide path of the local airport. My son keeps planes in the air as his job so I miss hearing that. You could always hear the planes coming and going.... I found it kind of comforting.
I live next to a set of freight train tracks near a major freight yard, just a few feet past this is a public transportation elevated train station, beyond that is a major thoroughfare right next to a busy airport. I have Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 24/7.
Tell me about it! I grew up in a house that was 70 feet from a freight line, with a road crossing about 500 feet down the street.
Go live in Alamogordo, or any other Air Force Base when it had a flight test field as a child, and landing planes will always make you hold your breath! PTSD!
Great video. Glad you were able to help the MOW guys out. As far as snow and ice on the road, I think some people that don't live up north realize how different compact snow and ice can be there. I used to live in Eastern Washington years ago. When Temps get below 25°F and the air dries up, the snow gets more powdery and because there's no water on ice situation and the snow isn't wet and sloppy, things aren't as slippery. I used to be able to cruise down the road with little concern there with a coating of compact snow and ice on the road and under 25°F but now that I live much further south, on the rare occasions it does snow or ice, I drive slow.

My Dad, Pennsylvania Railroad 🛤️ Agent all his life. Indiana. I worked with Dad at his Railroad Station while in jr.& sr. hi school.
After retiring; the small town made a Museum out of the PRR Station. Years of history!! I miss trains -a large part of my life…..
I live near a railroad track now and a different train track when little in a different part of Michigan. We equated a good economy with train frequency. Heart beat for USA.
I remember my Uncles talking like you. They are gone now. I have relatives up your way. I miss my relatives but I don’t miss the winters.
