HARRASED BY OWNER at HUGE COVERT BUNKER RAF Holmpton Hidden under a field!

  • Hidden under a field, you would never know it was there unless you knew the looks of the only visible element - the Guardhouse. Just goes to show the lengths the MOD would go to spending public money to essentially hide from the UK public - as its clear that the Russians would have known exactly what was there.
So this was obfuscation from the UK public that paid for this stuff.
Royal Air Force Holmpton or more simply RAF Holmpton is a former Royal Air Force Cold War era nuclear bunker that was built in the 1950s as an early warning radar station as part of the ROTOR Radar Defence Programme. Located just south of the village of Holmpton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, RAF Holmpton remained a part of the Defence Estate right up to 8 December 2014 when it was sold into private ownership after 62 years of military service.
The site runs to about 36 acres (150,000 m2) and comprises a number of surface structures along with a secure 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2) command bunker which is about 100 feet (30 m) below ground
The Bunker Design type R3-M2 (R3=Rotor Bunker Design R3 - M2=Including 2 additional mezzanine floors) was first built from 1951-3 and started life as an early warning radar station, part of the ROTOR program. An R3-M2 is a larger version of the standard UK R3 Bunker and RAF Holmpton was the only example of this type of structure in the UK as 1: It combined several Radar functions in the one building and 2: was a prototype for three similar bunkers built in Europe during the Cold War. The Bunker is set in an excavation of about 120-foot (37 m), it is encased in 10-foot (3 m) of solid concrete all round with tungsten rods providing additional stability to the outer shell. The shell is then encased in brickwork and lined with pitch to form a waterproof membrane. Between the top of the bunker and the surface there is a concrete buster slab inserted to provide a deflection of any incoming ordnance.
In the late 1960s it became a Master Comprehensive Radar Station trialling the Ericsson 'Fire Brigade Auto Intercept Radar System' and later going on to house a massive Elliott & Plessey computer system for the 'Linesman Radar Project' All Radar functions at the site eventually closed in 1974 and for the next few years the site was used for training.
    Command and Control Information System
In the 1980s, the Bunker was converted to form the new Emergency War Headquarters for RAF Support Command. However with the end of the Cold War in 1991 this function ceased and the site returned to training until 1994 when it was given a major refurbishment to become the first experimental (trialling) headquarters for the new UK Air CCIS system Electronic Warfare Advanced Communications System. This function remained at RAF Holmpton until 2002 although the CCIS Operations Room, known as AREA 7 remained intact until the end of July 2012.

before anyone asks yes we paid to get in and yes we asked twice RE cameras and had permission to take our cameras in, which anyone could see clearly had lights fitted to.

Hi Matt we visited the Bunker in the summer, I agree that all the staff were friendly, I also spoke to John and mentioned that I liked watching urbex and you tube he knew what it was. I was filming at the time in fact I mentioned and how great it was to watch your videos and learn something..
But I didn't name you or your channel. I had my lads with me and showed them the pumps and the well etc... He said film as much as like... There was another person there filming too and said the same thing...
The lady top side is his wife, she explained that they like to keep the Bunker on the low so to speak so it dosent ruin the atmosphere in the Bunker with too many people... They prefer word of mouth and I've lived near it for all my life and didn't know about it until this year...
Ooh I know of a Bunker near by that has never been explored too... 😉

I’ve visited this place twice. Both occasions pre-Covid. On both occasions my attention to detail seemed to annoy the tour guide who was more interested in herding us through on schedule than satisfying my curiosity. The place is awesome, in amazing state of restoration and preservation, and I felt I needed more time to soak it up and photograph it. You get the idea you have to go where you are told, and are allowed to see only what you are shown, at the time you are allowed to see it….. SO frustrating

Wow St Athan.... I used to live in Llantwit....in the Bovvy Castle for quite a few years! The pub had a HANDEL reciever in the foyer above the lounge door. It has to be tested once a year by the landlord (my father). In the event of a looming nuclear attack it was supposed to be manned by the military and it would transmit a code. I remember messing with it as a kid and hearing it beep! Great video by the way and "John" was a tool! Put me right of visiting, which is a shame...

I visited this bunker many years ago, the RAF were still there decommissioning the bunker, in fact, it was an RAF Officer that conducted the tour, he informed us that he was actually stationed there and his job would end the instant that the RAF left, we were not allowed to wander about and could only visit certain sections, they were removing the floor and the equipment and wiring from the section where the floor is missing, occasionally you could get a glimpse inside that area, there looked to be some large Radar monitors and a good deal of computer equipment, it looks as if they never put the floor back.

Someone’s probably answered, but just in case they haven’t about the small rope on the wall. If it had two knots every so often - one larger than the other - it’s a safety feature in the event of a fire. The small and large knots indicate direction to a safe exit, so if there’s smoke you can still find your way out. There was a bad fire at Neatishead’s bunker and several civilian firefighters died trying to make their way out.
When I worked in the R3 at Buchan and also at Boulmer we all had to be able to escape in an emergency, and the rope thing was something we were all familiar with. At Saxa Vord in the R10 we even had to be able to escape wearing a small emergency BA set.

@@TheSecretVault Theres more than one type of those knotted ropes. Down under they use three knots. two close together and a third slightly further apart then a good gap to the next 3 knots. A quick way of remembering it, taught to me by an ex firefighter (they run lines behind them to navigate in the pitch black), when doing my SCBA course. Think of the knots as your squad - The two firemen go in to the building first, followed by the commanding officer. When the proverbial hits the fan, the officer gets out first followed by the two firemen. Its probably something similar with the big and small knot, im guessing the skinny overworked grunt goes in first followed by the commanding officer, but when the shells start falling the officer legs it outta there first :D

Impressed to see such a fully maintained bunker complex, even though it is basically a museum now. Seeing some of your other videos where the RAF and ministry of defense have dismantled and basically turned former bunkers into skeletons, is very impressive. Although I would say for the sake of the United Kingdom as well as the United States and any other country, that it is foolish to decommission these bunkers. Even though the military would no longer see fit to maintain them, a budget should have been set aside for a division of Civil Defense in which to maintain and keep all of these bunkers in any of these countries fully operational in case a situation should arise to keep the civilian populace safe in those areas, as well as maintain a continuity of government. But again, great video as always!

I worked at Buchan in 1987 and we still had kit from the 1950s and 1960s. The replacement system was delayed and didn’t enter service until the early 90s. That got replaced in the early 2000s because it was already becoming obsolete with all the delays. So yes the kit is old because UKADGE was in service for a very long time before ICCS replaced it.

@@ianmcclellan7695 I understand that situation, I worked in the rag trade through the 1980s and all their kit was circa 1950's -1960's, even the desk I worked on was like something out of the ark, it had a cast iron base and frame, painted default 'factory green' and had a large tilting work table on an old fashioned weighted cantilever style tilting mechanism, had been recovered many times over the years lol I'm sure there were Egyptian hieroglyphics carved on it somewhere lol ..
Even my chair was probably an antique!
If ever they 'upgraded' anything it was always 2nd hand 'old' stuff from a factory that had closed, very rarely bought new!
The heating system in our office was a long thin finned rad heated by steam from one of those industrial cotton mill type steam boilers, like something out of a steam loco but long converted to gas powered!
The rad used to bang and rattle, make noises as it heated up and got to pressure, first time I heard it I thought it was going to blow!
The others just said oh that's normal don't worry!
It was fine in winter but it would sure make you sweat buckets if it was on in spring or autumn!!

You should have told him you're filming so viewers all over the world like me in Canada who would never get there to visit otherwise can see the place and the history. The light bit was stupid too, what a knob he was...

Owner sounds ex-military. If they don't want you to use additional lighting they should have stated it in the we allow filming sign. Bright led lighting does degrade artifacts, that's why many museums state no flash photography. There are ways of saying it nicely, maybe he needs a customer service course?

Ah, you met Uncle Nasty, "Children's entertainer", 'ruin-your-party-o-gram'.
Still at least you got a "yup", think yourself lucky!
P.S. I just wished you had turned around and replied that you were 'exploring' the museum, I think he might have exploded!
I just thought.... Maybe, he is also the security guard? His banter reminded me of one.

Fantastic video matt as usual that bloke was way out of order some people have got no respect for others....the drone flying of the bunker it would be good if you could superimpose a map of some kind with the drone footage to actually see how big the bunker is from a Ariel view if that makes sense matt...I could see that bloke made you feel uncomfortable that was uncalled for ...again matt great video and very interesting 👍 👌

I get the feeling it was personal. Maybe he's seen some of your videos or heard about you. But people want to see places like this because its part of our history and can't always get there themselves x so @Secret Vault this video was awesome, thank you. I'm wondering if he was ex RAF, hence him barking orders like he was talking to one of his cadets x

On the table underneath the triple handset phone there's a blue and yellow phone. Is that for communication with the little roc nuclear observation bunkers because they had exactly the same colour blue and yellow phones in them? I'm hoping someone on here will know, maybe John would be able to give me the answer?

He certainly doesn't make this place feel very welcoming, given the current situation around the world and places being closed due to restrictings they should be grateful they can open and have visitors to bring in money. Having watched this I won't be recommending it as a place to visit sadly.

  • @iangrimshaw1

A bit oversensitive if you don't mind me saying so. And to put your hand giving a wanker sign on TH-cam? Was that really necessary? I videoed in there after I asked if it was okay before we went down into the bunker and, for the life of me, I don't see why you had to have a light on most/all of the time.

John doesn't represent us Hull folk. His interpersonal skills need updating, certainly at a time like this when people want to visit the East Yorkshire coast. He's not really a good advertisement for our tourism. He's probably just showing his authority...but in an unpleasant way.
