My love, IT BECAME A TOURIST SPOT…..wasn’t always a tourist spot-its reputation began when Sylvia herself was still alive and running the place…”Sylvia’s has become what Roscoe’s is in LA” the only difference between the two is at least Sylvia’s is still family run(black owned) Roscoe’s was brought and is currently operated by Latinos no longer black owned(sad).
I do agree with you about most of us being raised by family with roots from the south and adopting the same culture up north, as far as soul food. But, I think Darius was referring to the difference between Soul restaurants in the north and south. In the south, they"re probably more authentic and serve only pure soul food. In the north, like New York, they add other influences into their recipes and menus. Darius mentioned they served him yellow rice. Yellow rice is not soul food, but is very common in Latino, Creole, Asian and maybe Caribbean cultures. It would probably never be served down south. And I'm sure the same can be said about the seasoning.
@1980starjustice absolutely what i was saying he shouldn't use Sylvia's as the blueprint of NY southern cooking. My southern roots still are our badge of honor, and mo everyone doesn't water it down. I'm just saying don't imply ALL New Yorkers
@@robbinhicks3112FULLY AGREED. Sylvia’s (past and present) does not represent all of soul food in New York. There re plenty of other spots in Harlem that are great. And my grandparents are from SC and I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I grew up on soul food. If Darius grew up on soul food in Chicago (and knows it well), then why can’t New Yorkers also know it well?
Their soul food started tasting that way because these places are frequent by tourist around the world & they cut out their seasoning to cater to basically tourists! Back in the days when Sylvia's was cooking. The was the real down-home cooking! Her food was freshly cooked & the real down-home cooking from the south! Back in the days! 😅
I'm from Harlem, and I only ate at Sylvia's about 3 times. Back when it opened DELICIOUS. After it was sold, it was not TASTY. NY is good for Spanish, Jamaican food, and pizza. If I want SOUL FOOD, I will make it myself. I'm not a chef (one of my brothers is), I'm a cook.
Darius look like he made a promise to see his niece perform at her 2nd great recital and the world knows she sounds like a wounded pidgeon.. That is how Darius is doing this review. Wow
You were very fair in your rating. The anxiety I felt from the man badgering you about giving him your phone number in order to be seated was enough to keep me from ever visiting Sylvia's again. I don't think he would have allowed you in if the two women didn't recognize and identify you as someone who's known to the public. I visited Sylvia's many years ago, and the true soul aspect of the restaurant seems to be gone. There seems to be more non-African Americans working there than African Americans. But, I guess tourists wont know the difference.
Why go somewhere you have predetermined is not good. It seems like u were extremely unenthused off the break. It just seems like it's difficult to be impartial at that point.
I went a couple years ago because it was my first time in nyc and it was recommended to me. Being from Memphis I didn’t really have high expectations of NY soul food. It was definitely a tourist trap, but it was a nice experience and good for what it was
DARIUSSSSS!!!! I watched to the very end (like I always do) and heard you say IF YOU'RE EVER IN THE NYC AREA, CHECK OUT HOUSTON'S.. when you were doing a review on Sylvia's!!!!! I know I wasn't the only one who caught that 😂🤣😂🤣 Love you still ❤
I don’t know why I hate watching his reviews. He always has such a very cocky demeanor. I thought I had already unsubscribed. I don’t like his personality.
I've lived in Harlem 59 years and the Sylvia was good back in the days really good the last time I went was in 2000 an pregnant craving Mac and cheese collard greens take out came back home was terribly disappointed Mac and cheese was not making it nor was the collard greens never went back . I frequently went everything was delicious since Mrs Sylvia passed away food went down.
You got to give it to him at least he accepted constructive criticism. And it aint like Sylvia is going to close down because of Darrius low rating. Sylvia been a household name before Darrius was in the nut sacks
❤❤🎉🎉😂😂HAY DARIUS... HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025.. DARIUS I used to go to Sylvia's Restaurant from Brooklyn..all the time..I usually ordered The Ribs collard greens and candied yams with cornbread 😋..And I use to see MS.SYLVIA there with her family..I would fiend on that Food... I'm interested in your review..the macaroni and cheese was the Bomb 💣..Also the Fried chicken 🍗🍗 was tasty...Good Luck..
It's very common for a restaurant to ask for your phone number along with your email address because they send you discounts. Longhorn & Toscana Grill and many more restaurants..
I have had Sylvia’s cookbook for a few years now. Me and my mom. My mother is known as the peach cobbler, tamale, pound cake lady here in Fresno California. She was well known for selling these things here. People would literally argue over her food. lol. We didn’t cook too many things from her cookbook, but one thing was spectacular…One of my relatives stole both of our cookbooks which my mom had added a few of her own secret recipes to random pages😡😢. Now my mom has dementia.. Sucks to lose her secret recipes, but I did get to write a few down. Darius you should come to some of the less popular places like Fresno.Lol… Hidden gems❤
I love they chicken as well and they potato salad with collard greens. They yams taste like (canned) yams and cornbread is good when it's warm. Harlem is the mecca of Soul food and there's so many options. You at Socco's they red velvet and chicken is good. Have fun and welcome to NYC
Hey Darius! Nice average review.😊 I love a clean kitchen.👋 You know that food could never taste like the food here in the South. Lol 😂🤣 Thanks for sharing. Blessings 🙏💘
Uncle Ben's has instant Rice, and they also have the non-instant one that goes in the rice cooker. I love me some Uncle Ben's Rice, with butter. Have not had it in a while. I prefer the non-instant one, I can put in the rice cooker.
Melba's is good went there for my birthday this year and all was good until the mouse showed up in the outdoor dining area!! The inside seating is too tight!!
I’m from the eastern seaboard of VA (Hampton) Where seafood is abundant. When I went to college where ALL my close friends were from various parts of NY, when I went to NY they told me not to go to Sylvia’s and Justin’s (Puff’s son restaurant) instead they took me to “hole in the wall spots” where I had Brooklyn pizza and almost lost my intestinal tract when I asked for extra cheese on a Brooklyn slice and they begged me not too😂😂, had the best Roti, the best Dominican blow out, and some of the best Chinese food. But all the American food I had there was sub par.
Ooh, that phone number business... Irks the heck outta me. I've stopped going to a couple of stores that insist that you give your number. I've lived in NY all my life by have never been to Sylvia's. My family can throw down so I never had to. But, insisting that I give my number when I just want to eat, pay and leave... I'd thank them for their time and go to Amy Ruth's. Maybe Melba's after reading what folks in the comments are saying.
I’m from the south GA and me and my girls visited Sylvia’s over Labor Day weekend 2024 and some other so call GREAT soul food restaurants in NYC and OMG 😱 HORRIBLE. Stick to steak and pizza when in NYC. I’m still pissed off with Sylvia’s banana pudding… I still don’t know what the heck that was…
Last time I was their on Sunday Brunch about 10 yrs AGO I enjoyed. I flew Back to PITTSBURGH right after we ate with takeout for my Brother Ppl wanted my food 😂

Badgering someone for their phone number after they said no, is crazy.
As a New Yorker, we don’t go to Sylvia’s. We go to Melba’s .
Facts
Yall know that's the same family, right?
I don't buy soul food out much, but I'd go to Lighthouse
Thank you
Literally , Sylvias is a tourist spot for ppl NOT from Harlem or NYC, melbas is lit
Don't generalize all soulfood in NYC is not the same. Most black Americans in NYC are from the south. You went to a tourist spot.

@MrsNikkiStephenson Exactly
Darius is so rude to people at these restaurants across the country, I couldn’t even get mad that the guy was badgering him at the door.
As my dad use to say, Sylvia’s ain’t been good since the 70’s when Ms. Sylvia was in the kitchen…
🌬📢💨 P💥PS
Its shareholders are white

When I went to NY in Oct I went to Melba’s based on the reviews of both Sylvia’s and Melba’s. Melba’s was BOMB affff I enjoyed it so much!
Thank For Letting That Be Known 😊
I liked that the chef came out and asked for feedback.
I have Miss Sylvia Soul Food cookbook, and I love all the recipes. I made the Gumbo and the Cornbread for Thanksgiving, and everyone loved it.
Oh Sylvia's is definitely not the same cuz that Indian man would have never been working in and used to be black people working there
I got turned off at 2:27. Dude is an a-hole. You may not be tryna be shady but you doing a good job at it. You make throwing shade look easy
He's not a good person he thinks he's more then he actually is but one thing for sure God will show him he's not!!!🤮🤮
The music was the best part of this whole video😊
I've never heard of asking for ur phone number. I'd decline that as well

Sylvia's is basuda
"I'm here to eat....not make love" 😂🤣🤣 Aye man.....😭😭😭😭 You don't be GAF 😩😩
I went a couple years ago because it was my first time in nyc and it was recommended to me. Being from Memphis I didn’t really have high expectations of NY soul food. It was definitely a tourist trap, but it was a nice experience and good for what it was
Memphians can't cook. I'm from Mississippi and our cooking is on a much higher leve!
DARIUSSSSS!!!! I watched to the very end (like I always do) and heard you say IF YOU'RE EVER IN THE NYC AREA, CHECK OUT HOUSTON'S.. when you were doing a review on Sylvia's!!!!! I know I wasn't the only one who caught that 😂🤣😂🤣 Love you still ❤
I never give my Phone# nor Email. The discounts aren’t worth it. In fact I don’t give my SS# since it isn’t a use for Legal IDENTIFICATION.
I don’t know why I hate watching his reviews. He always has such a very cocky demeanor. I thought I had already unsubscribed. I don’t like his personality.
Great video ❤ …Yeah I’m heading back to the Sylvia’s again! I haven’t been there in yearsss! … and I’m Harlem born and Bx raised 😊
I've lived in Harlem 59 years and the Sylvia was good back in the days really good the last time I went was in 2000 an pregnant craving Mac and cheese collard greens take out came back home was terribly disappointed Mac and cheese was not making it nor was the collard greens never went back . I was not listening to him , I was listening to the music.!!!!!!😄
They jammin ain’t they!! 💃🏻
True Review, so on point, I use to love Sylvias food not anymore, in the 70's, 80's and early 90's their food was so good.
You got to give it to him at least he accepted constructive criticism. And it aint like Sylvia is going to close down because of Darrius low rating. Sylvia been a household name before Darrius was in the nut sacks
WATCHING 👀 from london 🇬🇧 uk.
First time seeing this channel
As a blk brother
In uk we give our emails and numbers for confirmation of booking
We don't like Sylvia's like that in NYC. Maybe the tourist
It’s not the same ever since she sold it.
I’ve had restaurants ask for my phone number to let us know our table was ready. Not out of the ordinary. Now, why he was asking…
My favorite soul food restaurant in Harlem! I definitely loved the atmosphere and food a bit more before she passed♥️
❤❤🎉🎉😂😂HAY DARIUS... HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025.. What most people don't know, they use your number to 1. Track you and the places you go. and 2. They sell your info.
It's very common for a restaurant to ask for your phone number along with your email address because they send you discounts. Longhorn & Toscana Grill and many more restaurants..
Yeah not very common in NYC
Hello Darius. I loved the review. BLESSINGS

There's no homeless people around you can give your food to
yes, because forgot to say how much the ticket at the end of the review.
The first 3 minutes of this took me out!!!! DARIUS, YOU HAVE TO CHILL! YOU DON'T WANT EXTRAAAA IN YOUR FOOD HUN!❤😂❤
I love they chicken as well and they potato salad with collard greens. They yams taste like (canned) yams and cornbread is good when it's warm. Harlem is the mecca of Soul food and there's so many options. You at Socco's they red velvet and chicken is good. Have fun and welcome to NYC
They jammin I know that!! I need the playlist
Hey Darius! Nice average review.😊 I love a clean kitchen.👋 You know that food could never taste like the food here in the South. Lol 😂🤣 Thanks for sharing. Blessings 🙏💘
The playlist was a 5/5!
Sylvia's ain't been Sylvia-ing since Sylvia.
What rice is not instant? So uncle Ben’s is not instant ?
Uncle Ben's has instant Rice, and they also have the non-instant one that goes in the rice cooker. I love me some Uncle Ben's Rice, with butter. Have not had it in a while. I prefer the non-instant one, I can put in the rice cooker.
Not bad Darius thanks for sharing ❤
Melba's is good went there for my birthday this year and all was good until the mouse showed up in the outdoor dining area!! The inside seating is too tight!!
Agreed, the seating is very tight!!! But that eggnog waffle, chicken wings and Mac n cheese makes up for it lol
Harlem 🗽 home
Damn! No table manners, no class and no game!!! None whatsoever 😥
Thank You!!! He's acting like a QUEEN!!
Didn't they have a Atlanta location back in the day? I remember it was good then.
People often claim they hunger for truth, but rarely like the taste when it's served...
Love your reviews ❤ GIVE the food to the homeless.

Darius is smart 😂I'm from Harlem I don't give my number either ❤
how dare they serve instant mashed potato at sylvias
He was so negative. I would've not excepted his business
*accepted
Nobody eats at Sylvias ! The food tastes horrible.
The first of all I've been living in New York City. All my life and my Mommy. Never served mashed potatoes and yellow rice.
I'm a Mississippi cook, who has visited Sylvia's at least twice. Sylvia's is NASTY and I would not recommend it to anyone!
No sir I will not be giving you my phone number!
It's not the same since she passed away
Yeah they try to get away with instant and canned foods thinking we can't tell the difference. I don't eat chicken out, we cooks at home damit
GREAT NETWORKING WITH THE GRANDSON💥💥
Try Jacob’s
Thank you.
I love Sylvia’s and I have lived in NYC my whole life. To each their own.
Good luck that food is not great at all should went to melbas we don't give the restaurant our phone number only when we make reservation.
I went years ago and unfortunately the food was not good and the service was subpar.
I didn’t like Sylvia’s 😂 bless they hearts but the food wasn’t that good
It was very good back in the day when they opened up
Much respect don't talk big because your Chicago restaurant was not all that and it shut down get off your high horse
No number years ago they never asked for number so I the going to guarantee they not selling it
I’m from the south GA and me and my girls visited Sylvia’s over Labor Day weekend 2024 and some other so call GREAT soul food restaurants in NYC and OMG 😱 HORRIBLE. Stick to steak and pizza when in NYC. I’m still pissed off with Sylvia’s banana pudding… I still don’t know what the heck that was…
Don't nobody eat at that restaurant no more we eat at Jacobs down the street
Darius, sissy everybody don't know you. Calm down.
🌬📢💨 Whn he smelled tha mf 🌽 🍞, I just knew 😒.
I loved red rooster! The pecan crusted salmon is sooooo good!
Last time I was their on Sunday Brunch about 10 yrs AGO I enjoyed. I flew Back to PITTSBURGH right after we ate with takeout for my Brother Ppl wanted my food 😂
I love D. COOKS. YES, SO HONEST.❤❤❤❤
Hostess ask for phone numbers just to text/page you for seating--that's arrogant bumpkin ass behavior🤷🏾♀️ To assume someone wants it for any other reason is silly asf. Ugh
didn't like Sylvia's back in 2010 ,only liked the collards
Sylvia's is a tourist site.
Sylvias lost their taste once the mom passed
Tavern on Lagrange he probably was talking about
I went to Sylvia’s in November, everyone in my group was very disappointed
Darius, I brought Sylvia’s book her recipes
The food is not the same ever since sylvia passed. Her children are mean
Give it to a person in need on the street. Get plastic utensils.
Last time I went to Sylvias was in the 90's ran into Al Sharpton
I don't like anything and I'm not even there to taste it Everything looks dry😂😂😂😂

Because of security some people do ask for your phone number. How arrogant.
NYC. SHIT NASTY. 116th , Melba's!!! Over Sylvia's.
Review interesting. Slight sarcasm wasn’t required. It was the approach walking into the restaurant was off putting. As far as ATL their restaurant is pure trash. Most of them . Memphis food is good.
Go to Melba's or Jacob's.
I'm from Georgia and I think this New age is doing what you disagree with . These might be the transplants , just kidding but maybe not LOL Because My grand born 1912 and my great grand born 1892 taught me homemade Southern Fresh ingredients and my taste buds is different when I eat people's food. No No Lol And I also notice people will have a few others, family and friends tell them they food is Sooo Good and then you eat it and its not that great to others as they think LOL
It's the roaches for me at Sylvia's
In the 80's the Food was better. Once Bill Clinton came in and Gentrified Harlem the Food changed. Good Luck. The Edge, Sisters, and Spaha Soul, Blvd Bistro when I touch down Harlem are my go-to Sopts..❤❤❤
