    Ms. Hanna Jones does not have a Doctorate degree. Therefore, under the University rules of tenure she is not eligible. It was voted on by the faculty rules committee and the compromise was to give her a 5 year contract and allow her to earn her PhD. during that time. Also please remember that there are over 2,000 faculty members and 3 are leaving and give notice. Also with 30,000 students less than 300 showed up to protest. This is being painted completely out of context and is a disservice to the University. There is no major division here at the University.

    Tenure should be granted after an applicant has demonstrated competence in academia & research. NHJ simply has no experience at all, and she certainly hasn’t demonstrated competence in academic research. Her scholarship was demonstrated to be lacking and her perspective deeply bigoted in the 1619 project. It appears people want to give her a tenured position simply because she is black and received a politically motivated prize for an intellectually impoverished project. She not only lacks academic experience but her research was evaluated to be deeply flawed and bigoted.

  • @JaredCzaia
    @JaredCzaia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Why should someone get tenure when their calling card is the ahistorical 1619 project? The historians who have carefully studied the era objected to the central thesis that one of the primary reasons the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery. To earn tenure one must be a good scholar. She may be a good activist, for whatever that's worth, but it isn't worth tenure.

    Anyone would be lucky to have these women as professors. So sad, but not surprised, to hear about the challenges and traumas they face. Racism is a problem and invention of white people and as a white person, I strive to leverage my privilege to stand alongside those like these incredible women and take part in the work to eradicate racism. I mourn a society that puts obstacles in the paths of these scholars when we should rather be doing everything possible to facilitate their work.
    One thing I can do right now is engage with their work. While listening I accessed Dr. Holland's acclaimed book *The Erotic Life of Racism* as well as catch up on her blog theprofessorstable.wordpress.com
    I also downloaded Dr. Caldwell's recent article “Black Women’s Studies in the United States and Brazil: The Transnational Politics of Knowledge Production,”
    These are small steps, but one of the best ways to honor a scholar is to honor their work. As Dr. Holland said in this interview, "I wish someone would ask me about my work..."

      Yes, it's really a blessing in disguise. Howard U got Dr. Cornel West under these same circumstances. White America still wants to be segregated, but calls Farrakhan a racist when he speaks of separation and having our own. See, how they burned down Tulsa OK when we built were forced to have our own during Jim Crow with no help from anyone? White America wants to have her cake and eat it too.

    The situation has soured, even if she’s hired for tenure it will no longer be this huge welcome. I’ve never seen a professor with only a Masters be tenured. Usually only at smaller colleges, we truly don’t know the reason for her not being hired. UNC is a very liberal school but predominantly white liberal. It’s interesting to see them not accept one of their own based on political beliefs but not same skin color. I guess skin color still plays a huge role and not the shared ideology of people.
