- I bought the Log Ox 3 in 1 forestry tool and used it for several months before doing a review on it. I wanted to give an honest Log Ox review for those who are interested in buying a cant hook or a log lift. The answer is yes. The basic 3 in 1 is worth the money and the log hauler is an Absolut delight to use. I did get a discount on this but it really only covered the shipping. If I had absolutly nothing would I buy the Log Ox again? Yes! You don't need the pickaroon and hauler holster but the basic 3 in 1 is a solid unit that will save you time and back pain.

In one part of the video I take one hand off of the chainsaw while continuing to saw. This is very dangerous. I left it in the video because nobody is perfect and it shows how easily mistakes can be made. Luckily nothing happened.

Great, now get a proper helmet with face shield, especially since you ALWAYS have the chain/bar lined up with your head... your Stihl manuals say your head should never be lined up with the chain/bar but off to the side in case of kickbacks, and that you should always wear the helmet with shield.

It is a nice tool to have around. That can’t hook with an handle “log hauler” is my favorite feature. You’ll need one when you get your mill to help turn the logs.
I wish I was getting a woodmizer. Maybe they’d loan me one😂 the problem with TH-cam sponsorships is when you need the stuff you’re channel is too small. As you buy stuff and your channel gets bigger then companies want to get involved.😂😢

I am a bit older than you. Well more than a bit. My lower back is in bad shape from all the lifting i have one and do. I wear a lower back support.
Sure helps keep my muscles, spine supported and keeps them warm. Nothing wrong with this tool. But one still lifts things.
My kant hook and pickaroon are old school wood handle style. Hand downs from previous generations.
I agree anything that can help with wear and tear on the body.

I feel your pain; I’m awaiting health insurance to approve me for back surgery (I’ve seen the MRI, it’s a slam dunk)... can’t wait to get fixed and get back to doing something other than sitting and laying down....
I think if it is saving your back when you have a need to cut so much wood those tools are well worth the money.

One issue with them is that working in the woods you are likely to never find any dropped pins when changing the function so a set of extra pins is a must but that can stay with the chainsaw tools.

I liked the review. I like what you said that it just a back saver. My wife wants us to get a saw mill one day so I’m sure this tool will be part of the tool box. See you on the next one.
If you’re getting a sawmill you’ll definitely need one. Getting the log in the right position and then rolling it is we’re this would really come in handy.

Thanks for the review. Just got mine in today (11/10/2020) and already love it. You can immediately tell how much its going to save your back after using it once. I'm young enough and just got into log cutting and splitting and between this and the hay hook I feel like I'm already ahead of the game in terms of saving my body. Random but also invested in a pair of shin guards after having a few logs roll back right into my legs. My shins are thanking me lol.

I noticed the older we get the more we’re willing to spend on stuff to save our backs. I just wonder if our backs would have been better off investing in the same stuff when we were younger and had so much pride that it would have hurt our ego then ? It also doesn’t help thinking that we had more income to buy these things when we were younger and now have to figure out if we can even get them. Hope you all have a great week on the island. Thankyou, yeah no ox in these woods, looks like a good tool but do you know the weight? I'm older so much added weight might not help, not sure. Thankyou for explaining, I think your right on the tip another hook. Can that kind of metal take a weld, good metal?

I’m not sure on the weight. My neighbor had a log lifter with a wooden handle and it was about the same weight.
The storm has come and gone. We all survived. It did get pretty windy though.

My brother just bought one. I am really really impressed with the build quality of the Log Ox. I have seen complaints of the Tractor Supply log jack breaking. I don't see how the Log Ox would break using it with the size logs the hook accommodates. The build quality and thickness of steel almost prevents it from long term use as a pickaroon if you have to do a lot of reaching straight out like in to a truck bed. But that sucker sure is not going to break!
No it’s pretty sturdy, that’s for sure.
This is my second year using it and my only complaint would be the pins not staying fastened. Other than that it’s a great tool.
ijust use the pulp hooks that i had on my pulp truck to cheap to buy something new

That think looks like awesome. I see he just gives it a little twist to get the spike out of the wood. Pretty smart.
An entertaining and informative video. Very genuine too. The Log Ox tool looks good but after buying new tractor I’ll have to minimise spending for a while. I may buy a cheaper pickaroon instead.

How’s the timber jack or log lift work out in your area? For the medium size trees I can lift small sections but the cross bar just sinks into the ground or one side sink down and it tips over.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead it did pretty well at our corner property. One section of the lot was pretty soft from layers of dead leaves and stuff over the years. It did sink in that section when I used it on a larger heavier log.

Everyone makes mistakes and if it helps someone who’s just starting to use a chainsaw to think about what they should or shouldn’t be doing, it’s worth it.
I was wondering where both of the 550 gallon water tanks went. Going to be needing them soon!
Yeah with the last rainfall we got 1400 gallons of water right now.

Log Oxes are GREAT. They save your back. Pickaroons are handy sometimes, but the log ox is definitely worth it's price for saving your back! Great review. And I hear you on wishing for a Woodmizer Sawmill! That's gonna be another gamechanger!

I'm thinking of getting the 3-in-1, although some Amazon reviews show a break in welds. Has anyone had this issue with this tool? For $189 and made in USA the welds shouldn't be breaking, no?
You’re right. I’ve been using it a lot over the last year and haven’t had any issues other than the pins popping out every now and then.
I was thinking of buying a logOx but from watching the info available before your video the users were always moving smaller diameter than what we encounter in Southeast. (our logs are BIG for those new to Southeast Alaska).. But your video showed me what I needed to see. I will buy a Log Ox.

My dad was a logger and that was called a Kant hook not sure of the spelling and they are designed to roll logs they were like twenty dollars in the nineteen sixties when his help didn’t show up I would help him in the sawmill my brother was ten and would hall a load of logs out of the woods while dad followed with the mule my brother couldn’t reach the clutch so dad would put in low gear and jump off the truck can you imagine anyone doing that now but we learned to do so many things by helping out those were great times I learned to use a chain saw I’m 75 now and still use one to keep trees out of the field and fence line only now I don’t have enough strength to get it started so I drive seven miles to my brothers he’ll pull the rope with one hand and it just annoys me that I can’t start it I’ll sit it in the truck let it idle all the way home and don’t shut it off till I’m done I have a STHL their great saws my granddaughter wanted me to cut some small trees out of her yard a few weeks ago she is twenty seven so I thought she could pull the rope to start it well she couldn’t and on the way to her house I had seen some city workers a couple of blocks away so I went back to them ask if they would start my saw I put it in the truck and it idled till I got back to her house these guys looked at me like I was nuts I guess because I’m old and asking strangers to start my saw by watching and doing things I was always able to help my dad and my husband or anyone else that needed help
Getting old is for the birds. Glad you can still help out even if you have to ask strangers to start the saw. Good for you for staying active.

I've also cut wood for years without having log jacks or hookaroons and my back hurts. (I was cutting wood today.) They say to pick things up with your legs not your back but everything about firewood cutting goes against that idea. Bending over constantly holding a 13 pound chainsaw doesn't help. I just bought a log jack this year and and hookaroon. But I always forget about the hookaroon. While watching you I was thinking about how it would be nice to have a pit like they use to work on cars but only a couple feet deep. Roll the logs onto the other base logs and then get in the hole to cut the logs while standing straight up. The hole would be on one side of the log platform. Instead of jacking the logs up, just lower the ground on one side. Then step out of the pit to move the chunks out of the way so you can cut the next log. Lifting the big chunks and constantly bending over wears on the lower back over the years. I like the measuring painter. I use my bar to estimate cutting length. And our dominant rooster has also been on the attack lately. I was trying to bend over to unlatch a door one night using a flashlight and here came ole puffy neck. I don't think he likes the light.
Dashbshots ha that’s true, it seems like it’s all back when cutting wood.
That lit idea is pretty nifty but then you’d have to get the rounds out of your little hole. Maybe get some larger sections you’ve bucked you and use that as a base. Then use the tractor to lay logs on top of them and keep a little more vertical when cutting. I may give that a shot. I’ve been using some small logs but now I have some more room to work I could get the tractor in and out of places.

Sometimes you can find metal Pickaroon “heads” for sale on eBay, you could buy one and put it on a short handle, probably be much cheaper that way to get exactly what you want....

That’s not a bad idea. I’ll just keep what I got. It works just fine. I could also just cut the handle off and make what I got shorter.
I have a plain old peavy and it’s a life saver especially when moving 30’ pole lengths piled all together by a log truck or 5’ diameter stuff. Mingo looks handy also
A nice peavy is nice to have. Having a longer handle would definitely come in handy when working with larger logs.

I bought a 48 inch Timber Jack for this years wood. Wow what a back saver and chain saver. That Kioti tractor was a HUGE back saver too. You have some super big trees to deal with too. I made up 1/2 cord pallets to move ,split ,stack and store the wood in. Using the Kioti and forks. Saved my back so much. Great video

Thanks for the review. I’d be tempted to buy that thing just to turn logs over, but I don’t have too many trees left to clear out, so I’ll probably just keep doing things the hard way. Our house is heated with heat pump and hydro is cheap electricity, so that’s what we’re using now. When we lived on our boat, we used to go cut down standing dead red cedar and stash it in the hold. It was super dry and the wood stove loved it. We called it dessert wood 😋🔥
